śrīkṛṣṇaṁ saccidānandaṁ natvā'tha kriyate mayā ।
yogasūtreṣu vyākhyānaṁ saṅkṣepeṇa na vistarāt ॥ 1 ॥
iha khalu śrutismṛtītihāsādyakhilavāṅmayaprasiddhadharmārthakāmamokṣapuruṣārthacatuṣṭayeṣu tāvanmokṣaḥ paramapuruṣārthaḥ । sa ca śravaṇamanananididhyāsanasādhyastatrāpyakhilādhikṛtasyāsādhāraṇakaraṇībhūtasyā-ṣṭāṅgayogena prāyeṇa kavalīkṛtasyaitanmatābhimatasya ca yathāyathaṁ mokṣāṇimādisiddhaye ca bhagavān patañjaliḥ samādhitatsādhanavibhūtikaivalyākhyapādacatuṣṭayātmakaikādhyāyaparimitāni sūtrāṇi cakāra । teṣu ca sūtreṣu bhagavān bādarāyaṇo bhāṣyaṁ cakāra । tadupari ca sarvatantrasvatantrā vācaspatimiśrāṣṭīkāṁ cakruḥ । tatra bhāṣye taṭṭīkāyāṁ cātigambhīratvānna sahasā sūtrārthaḥ īṣadvyutpannairmumukṣubhiranyairvā sūtrārthajijñāsubhirlabdhuṁ śakyate । tathā ca tadanugrahāya tānevāśritya sūtrārthabodhinī vṛttirārabhyate ।
tatredamādyaṁ sūtram –
atha yogānuśāsanam ॥ 1 ॥
atha-śabdaḥ ārambhārthaḥ । śrutimātreṇa maṅgalaprayojakaśca । śāsyate'neneti śāsanaṁ śāstraṁ, yogānāmanuśāsanaṁ yogānuśāsanam । tathāca yogaśāstramārabhyata ityarthaḥ ॥ 1 ॥
tatra samprajñātāsamprajñātabhedena vakṣyamāṇena dvividhayogasya sādhāraṇaṁ lakṣaṇamāha –
yogaścittavṛttinirodhaḥ ॥ 2 ॥
cittasya rajastamovṛttīnāṁ vakṣyamāṇānāṁ nirodhaḥ pratilomapariṇāmenopaśamo yoga ityarthaḥ । ato vakṣyamāṇasamprajñātasamādheḥ sāttvikavṛttisattve'pi nāvyāptiḥ । tatra cittasya triguṇātmakatvāt kṣiptamūḍhavikṣiptaikāgraniruddharūpapañcabhūmayo'vasthāviśeṣā bhavanti । tatra na tisṛṇāmupayogo'pi tu dvayorevāntyayoḥ । tatra kṣiptaṁ rajasa udrekādasthiraṁ bahirmukhatayā sukhaduḥkhādiviṣayeṣu vikalpiteṣu vyavahiteṣu sannihiteṣu ca rajaḥpreritaṁ bhavati । tacca sadaiva daityadānavādīnām । mūḍhaṁ tamasa udrekāt kṛtyākṛtyavibhāgamagaṇayya krodhādibhirviruddhakṛtyeṣveva nirataṁ bhavati । tacca sadaiva rakṣaḥpiśācādīnām । vikṣiptaṁ tu sattvodrekād rajoviśiṣṭaṁ parihṛtya duḥkhasādhanaṁ sukhasādhaneṣveva śabdādiṣu pravṛttaṁ bhavati । tacca sadaiva devānāṁ, rajaso'pyabhāvena śuddhasattvodrekād bhagavadbhaktānāṁ devāsuramanuṣyādīnāṁ sāttvikavṛttiviśiṣṭamekāgraṁ bhavati । tasyā api nirodhe niruddhaṁ yogināmeva bhavati । vyaktametadākare ॥ 2 ॥
nanu buddhivṛttisvabhāvasya puruṣasya vṛttinirodhe kathaṁ sthitirityata āha-
tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe'vasthānam ॥ 3 ॥
yadā cittasya śāntaghoramūḍhānāṁ sarvāsāṁ vṛttīnāṁ nirodhastadā draṣṭuścidātmanaḥ svābhāvike svarūpe sthitiḥ, kusumāpāye yathā sphaṭikasya tathetyarthaḥ । puruṣasya caitanyamātraṁ svabhāvo, na vṛttaya iti bhāvaḥ ॥ 3 ॥
nanu tarhi vyutthāne svabhāvaccyutiḥ syādityāśaṅkyāha –
vṛttisārupyamitaratra ॥ 4 ॥
itaratra nirodhād vyutthāne sati yāścittavṛttayaḥ śāntādyāstatsārūpyaṁ vṛttimadbuddhyavivekena puruṣasya śānto duḥkhīti vṛttitādātmyabhrama ityarthaḥ । ato na svabhāvāt pracyutiḥ । na hi lauhityabhramakāle sphaṭikasya svabhāvāccyutirastīti bhāvaḥ । nirodhe muktirvyutthāne bandha iti sūtradvayatātparyam ॥ 4 ॥
idānīṁ niroddhavyānāṁ vṛttīnāmiyattāmāha –
vṛttayaḥ pañcatayyaḥ kliṣṭākliṣṭāḥ ॥ 5 ॥
tayap pratyayo'vayavavācī । vṛttayo'grimasūtroktāḥ । pramāṇādayaḥ pañcavṛttiviśeṣā vṛttisamūhasyāvayavino'vayavā ityarthaḥ । pañcāvayavā yāsāṁ tāḥ pañcatayyaḥ । tāsāṁ hānopādānasiddhaye bhedamāha ॥ kliṣṭā akliṣṭā iti ॥ rāgādikleśānāṁ hetavaḥ । kliṣṭā bandhaphalāḥ । sarvo hi jantuḥ pramāṇādivṛttibhirjñātārtheṣu rāgādinā karma kṛtvā sukhādinā baddhyate । akliṣṭā mokṣaphalāḥ kleśanāśinyaḥ ātmagocarā ityarthaḥ ॥ 5 ॥
tā eva pañcavṛttīruddiśati –
pramāṇaviparyayavikalpanidrāsmṛtaya ॥ 6 ॥
ito'nyā vṛttirnāstīti uddeśasūtrasya phalam ॥ 6 ॥
tatra pramāṇavṛttiṁ vibhajate –
pratyakṣānumānāgamāḥ pramāṇāni ॥ 7 ॥
trīṇyeva pramāṇānīti bhāvaḥ । tatra mānasāmānyalakṣaṇamavisaṁvādi jñānam । tatrāpīndriyapraṇālikayā cittasya bāhyavastūparāgāt tadviṣayā sāmānyaviśeṣātmano'rthasya viśeṣāvadhāraṇapradhānā vṛttiḥ pratyakṣapramāṇam । gṛhītasaṁbandhālliṅgālliṅgini sāmānyātmanā'dhyavasāyo'numānam । āptavacanamāgamaḥ ॥ 7 ॥
viparyayaṁ lakṣayati –
viparyayo mithyājñānamatadrūpapratiṣṭham ॥ 8 ॥
atadrūpapratiṣṭhaṁ tadrūpe svaviṣaye svajanyapratiṣṭhāśūnyaṁ bādhāvirodhīti yāvat । vikalpe'tivyāptivāraṇāya mithyājñānapadam ॥ 8 ॥
vikalpaṁ lakṣayati –
śabdajñānānupātī vastuśūnyo vikalpaḥ ॥ 9 ॥
naraśṛṅgādiśravaṇānantaraṁ bhavantī nirviṣayā vṛttiryā sā vikalpa ityarthaḥ । vastuśūnyatvānnāyaṁ pramāṇaṁ, vyavahārahetutvācca na viparyayaḥ ॥ 9 ॥
nidrāṁ lakṣayati –
abhāvaprayayālambanā vṛttirnidrā ॥ 10 ॥
kāryaṁ pratyāyayati janayatīti pratyayo hetuḥ । jāgratsvapnavṛttīnāmabhāve hetustam ālambanaṁ viṣayo yasyāḥ sā vṛttirnidrā । asyāḥ sukhamahamasvāpsaṁ, na kiñcidavediṣamiti suṣuptyanantaraṁ jāgare smṛtidarśanāt । smṛteścānubhavavyatirekeṇānupapattervṛttitvam । vṛttiśabdoccāraṇaṁ tu jñānasāmānyābhāvo nidreti tārkikasvīkṛtanirāsārthaṁ, bhāṣyakṛdbhistu vyākhyātam । sā tu prabodhe pratyavamarśāt pratyayaviśeṣa eva । kathamiticeducyate । sukhamasvāptsaṁ prasannaṁ me manaḥ prajñāṁ me viśāradīkaroti । duḥkhamahamasvāpsaṁ glānaṁ me mano bhramatyanavasthitaṁ, gāḍhaṁ mūḍho'hamasvāpsaṁ gurūṇi me'ṅgāni klāntaṁ me cittam alaṁ muṣitamiva bhavatīti । sa khalvayaṁ prabuddhasya pratyavamarśo na syād asati pratyayā'nubhave, tadāśritāḥ smṛtayaśca tadviṣayā na syuḥ । tasmāt pratyayaviśeṣo nidrā । sā ca samādhāvitarapratyayavanniroddhavyeti । na ca bhāṣyakāravirodhād vṛttikāravyākhyānāṁ viruddhamiti śaṅkyam । vṛttikārasya prasiddhāvasthātrayābhiprāyāt । bhāṣyakārasya tu avasthātrayasyā'pyekaikāvasthātraividhyāṅgīkārābhiprāyatvānna virodhaḥ ॥ 10 ॥
smṛtiṁ lakṣayati –
anubhūtaviṣayāsaṁpramoṣaḥ smṛtiḥ ॥ 11 ॥
asaṁpramoṣo'dhikāgrahaḥ । anubhūtagraha iti yāvat । sā smṛtirityarthaḥ । nanu svakare gajavaiśiṣṭyamananubhūtamapi svapne smaryate iticenna । tasya viparyayatvāditi bhāvaḥ ॥ 11 ॥
āsāṁ vṛttīnāṁ nirodhopāyamāha –
abhyāsavairāgyābhyāṁ tannirodhaḥ ॥ 12 ॥
tatra saṁsārasāgarābhimukhyā viṣayabhūmigāyāścittavṛtteḥ pravāho vairāgyeṇa bhajyate । tatpravāhabhaṅge nidrā syāt । tadbhaṅgāya abhyāso vihitaḥ । tena layavikṣepapravāho bhajyate । ato dvāvevoktau ॥ 12 ॥
abhyāsasvarūpamāha –
tatra sthitau yatnā'bhyāsaḥ ॥ 13 ॥
tatra tayormadhye rajastamovṛttiśūnyasya cittasya ekāgratāsthitiḥ । tasyāṁ kāryāṇi yamaniyamādīni । tadviṣayakaḥ prayatno'nuṣṭhānamabhyāsa ityarthaḥ ॥ 13 ॥
nanvanādiprabalarājasatāmasavṛttisaṁskārairvirodhibhiḥkuṇṭhito'bhyāso na sthitau ityata āha-
sa tu dīrghakālanairantaryasatkārāsevito dṛḍhabhūmiḥ ॥ 14 ॥
tuśabdaḥ śaṅkāvyāvṛttyarthaḥ । saḥ abhyāso dīrghakālanairantaryeṇa brahmacaryaśraddhārūpasaṁskāreṇa ca sevito dṛḍhabhūmiḥ dṛḍhasaṁskāraḥ । sa vyutthānasaṁskārairnābhibhūyate, kintu sthitisamartho bhavatītyarthaḥ ॥ 14 ॥
vairāgyasvarūpamāha –
dṛṣṭānuśravikaviṣayavitṛṣṇasya vaśīkārasaṁjñā vairāgyam ॥ 15 ॥
dṛṣṭeṣu stryannapānādiṣu evamanuśravo vedastadukteṣu ānuśravikeṣu svargāṇimādiṣu pūrvoktābhyāsena sākṣātkārādvitṛṣṇasyopekṣābuddhirvaśīkārasaṁjñā vairāgyamityarthaḥ । tacca bhūmikājayakrameṇa labdhuṁ śakyate ॥
taduktam – vairāgyamādyaṁ yatamānasaṁjñaṁ kvacidvirāgo vyatirekasaṁjñakaḥ ।
ekendriyākhyaṁ hṛdi rāgasaukṣmyaṁ tasyāpyabhāvastu vaśīkṛtākhyam ,iti ॥
tatra svīkṛtaviṣayān santyaktumaśaknuvato'pi samānecchātyāgenādyam । tato'pi viṣayāṇāṁ madhye priyavastulāvaṇyādivyatirekeṇā'pi vṛttirdvitīyam । tathā vṛttāvapi manasi rāgaśaithilyena bāhyendriyaireva sevanaṁ tṛtīyam । tatrāpyaudāsīnyaṁ caturthamityarthaḥ ॥ 15 ॥
aparaṁ vairāgyamuktvā paraṁ vairāgyamāha –
tatparaṁ puruṣakhyāterguṇavetṛṣṇyam ॥ 16 ॥
tatra vaśīkārasaṁjñake vairāgye jāte sati saṁprajñātaprabhāvena puruṣasya yā khyātiḥ pradhānādviviktasya yaḥ sākṣātkāra ucyate tadabhyāsādaśeṣaguṇatrayavyavahāreṣu vaitṛṣṇyam । tṛṣṇāvirodhinī cittavṛttiryā bhavati tatparaṁ śreṣṭhaṁ phalabhūtaṁ vairāgyam । tatparipākāccittopaśamaparipākastato'vilambena kaivalyamityarthaḥ ॥ 16 ॥
idānīṁ caturvidhaṁ saṁprajñātaṁ darśayati –
vitarkavicārānandāsmitārūpānugamātsaṁprajñātaḥ ॥ 17 ॥
sthūlasākṣātkāro vitarkaḥ । sūkṣmasākṣātkāro dhyānena sthūlakāraṇapañcatanmātrāviṣayako vicāraḥ। indriyāṇāmasthūlarūpatve'pi prakāśakatvena sāttvikarūpatvātteṣāṁ dhyānena sākṣātkāra ānandaḥ । teṣāṁ kāraṇaṁ buddhiḥ । sā grahītraikībhūtā'smitetyucyate । tadviṣayakasākṣātkāro'smitā । atra sthūlaṁ sūkṣmaṁ ca grāhyaṁ, grāhakāṇīndriyāṇi, gṛhītā'smitā । teṣu dhyānaparipākaḥ saṁprajñāto yogaḥ । sa caitaiḥ svarūpairanugamāccaturvidhaḥ savitarka ityādiḥ ॥ 17 ॥
adhunā sopāyamasaṁprajñātamāha –
virāmapratyayābhyāsapūrvaḥ saṁskāraśeṣo'nyaḥ ॥ 18 ॥
vṛttīnāmabhāvo virāmaḥ । tasya pratyayaḥ kāraṇaṁ vairāgyaṁ, tadabhyāsaḥ pūrva upāyo yasya sa tathā । anena padena yukto'nyaḥ asaṁprajñātaḥ । paraṁ vairāgyaṁ saṁprajñātaśeṣānabhibhūya svasaṁskāraṁ śeṣayati sa nirbījaḥ samādhiḥ karmabījābhāvāt ॥ 18 ॥
ayamasaṁprajñāto dvividhaḥ, bhavapratyaya upāyapratyayaśca । tatra mumukṣubhirheyaṁ bhavapratyayamāha –
bhavaprayayo videhaprakṛtilayānām ॥ 19 ॥
bhūtendriyāṇāmanyatarasmin bhāvanayā dehapātānantaraṁ bhūtendriyeṣu līnā māṁsaśoṇitalomamedo'sthimajjārūpaṣāṭkauśikadehaśūnyā videhāḥ । avyaktamahadahaṅkārapañcatanmātreṣu prakṛtirūpakāraṇeṣu līnāḥ prakṛtilayā jīvāḥ । teṣāṁ cittaṁ saṁskāramātraśeṣamityasaṁprajñātaḥ । sa tu bhavapratyayaḥ । bhavanti jāyante'syāmiti anātmanyātmabuddhiḥ । sa pratyayo heturyasya sa tathā'vidyāmūlo'yaṁ yogo'to heyaḥ । ata evoktaṁ vāyupurāṇe –
daśamanvantarāṇīha tiṣṭhantīndriyacintakāḥ ।
bhautikāśca śataṁ pūrṇaṁ sahasraṁ tvābhimānikāḥ ॥
bauddhā daśasahasrāṇi tiṣṭhanti vigatajvarāḥ ।
pūrṇaṁ śatasahasraṁ tu tiṣṭhantyavyaktacintakāḥ ॥
puruṣaṁ nirguṇaṁ prāpya kālasaṁkhyā na vidyate, iti ॥ 19 ॥
adhunā mumukṣūṇāmupādeyaṁ dvitīyamāha –
śraddhāvīryasmṛtisamādhiprajñāpūrvaka itareṣām ॥ 20 ॥
puruṣagocarā sāttvikī śraddhā । tayā vīryaṁ prayatno jāyate tena yamaniyamaparamparayā smṛtirdhyānam । tena samādhiḥ । tena prajñā puruṣagocarakhyātyabhyāsaḥ saṁprajñātaḥ । tataḥ paravairāgyādasaṁprajñātaḥ । itareṣāṁ pūrvavilakṣaṇānāṁ mumukṣūṇāṁ bhavatītyarthaḥ ॥ 20 ॥
tatra prajñātā upāyā mṛdumadhyādhimātrāstrividhāḥ । tathā ca yogino'pi trayaḥ । mṛdūpāyo, madhyopāyo'dhimātropāyaśceti । tatra mṛdūpāyo'pi trividhaḥ । mṛduvego, madhyavegastīvrasaṁvegaśceti tatra tīvrasaṁvegasya kṣipraṁ samādhimāha –
tīvrasaṁvegānāmāsannaḥ ॥ 21 ॥
samādhilābhaḥ । saṁvego vairāgyam । athavā vairāgyānukūlakriyāheturdṛḍhataraḥ saṁskāra utkaṭavairāgyamiti yāvat । yeṣāmupāyāścādhimātrāsteṣāṁ yogināmāsannaḥ samadhirasaṁprajñātaḥ । tato mokṣa ityarthaḥ ॥ 21 ॥
mṛdumadhyādhimātratvāttato'pi viśeṣaḥ ॥ 22 ॥
tīvrasaṁvegasyāpi mṛdumadhyādhimātratvāttato mṛdutīvrasaṁvegasya yogina āsannāt samādhermadhyatīvrasaṁvegasyāsannatarastato'pyadhimātratīvrasaṁvegasyāsannatamaḥ samādhilābha iti viśeṣaḥ ityarthaḥ ॥ 22 ॥
idānīmetadupāyādvilakṣaṇamupāyāntaramāha –
īśvarapraṇidhānādvā ॥ 23 ॥
īśvare kāyikādvācanikānmānasāt praṇidhānād bhaktiviśeṣādāsannatamaḥ samādhilābhaḥ । vāśabdo bhaktivikalpārthaḥ ॥ 23 ॥
īśvarasya svarūpamāha –
kleśakarmavipākāśayairaparāmṛṣṭaḥ puruṣaviśeṣa īśvaraḥ ॥ 24 ॥
kliśyantīti kleśā avidyādayaḥ pañca । karma dharmādharmau । tayoḥ phalaṁ vipākaḥ । phalānukūlāḥ saṁskārā āśayāḥ । manasyāśerata iti vyutpatteḥ । taiḥ kleśādibhiḥ kālatraye'pyasaṁbandhaḥ puruṣa īśvaraḥ । viśeṣapadena vastutaḥ kālatrayāsaṁbandhajīvebhyo vyāvṛttiḥ kṛtā ॥
atra bhāṣyam । vakṣyamāṇā avidyādayaḥ kleśāḥ, kuśalākuśalāni karmāṇi, tatphalaṁ vipākaḥ, tadanuguṇā vāsanā āśayāḥ । te ca manasi vartamānā api puruṣe vyapadiśyante । sa hi tatphalasya bhokteti । yathā jayaḥ parājayo vā yoddhṛṣu vartamānaḥ svāmini vyapadiśyate । yo hyanena bhogenāparāmṛṣṭaḥ sa puruṣaviśeṣa īśvara iti । kaivalyaṁ prāptāstarhi santi ca bahavaḥ kevalinaḥ । te hi trīṇi bandhanāni chitvā kaivalyaṁ prāptāḥ । īśvarasya ca tatsaṁbandho na bhūto na bhāvī । yathā muktasya pūrvā bandhakoṭiḥ prajñāyate, naivamīśvarasya । yathā prakṛtilīnasyottarā bandhakoṭiḥ sambhāvyate । sa tu sadaiva muktaḥ sadaiveśvara iti । yo'sau prakṛṣṭasattvopādānādīśvarasya śāśvatika utkarṣaḥ sa kiṁ sanimittaḥ , āhosvinnirnimitta iti ॥ tasya śāstraṁ nimittam ॥ śāstra punaḥ kinnimittam । prakṛṣṭasattvanimittam ॥ etayoḥ śāstrotkarṣayorīśvarasattve vartamānayoranādisambandhaḥ । tasmādetadbhavati sadaiveśvaraḥ sadaiva mukta iti । taccaitasyaiśvaryaṁ sāmyātiśayavinirmuktam । na tāvadaiśvaryāntareṇa tadatiśayyate । yadevātiśāyitaṁ tasmādeva tat syāt । tasmādyatra kāṣṭhāprāptiraiśvaryasya sa īśvaraḥ । na ca tatsamānamaiśvaryamasti । kasmāt saḥ । tulyayorekasmin yugapatkāmite'rthe navamidamastu purāṇamidamastviti ekasya siddhāvitarasya prākāmyavighātādūnatvaṁ prasaktam । dvayośca tulyayoryugapatkāmitārthaprāptirnāsti । arthasya viruddhatvāt । tasmādyasya sāmyātiśayavinirmuktamaiśvaryaṁ sa īśvaraḥ । sa ca puruṣaviśeṣa iti ॥ 24 ॥
tasya sarvajñatve'numānamāha –
tatra niratiśayaṁ sarvajñabījam ॥ 25 ॥
tatra īśvare niratiśayaṁ sarvajñatvabījaṁ jñāpakamityarthaḥ । tathā cāyaṁ prayogaḥ । asmadādīnāṁ jñānaṁ niratiśayajñānenā'vinābhutaṁ, sātiśayatvād, yat sātiśayaṁ tat samānajātīyena niratiśayena yuktam । yathā kumbhaparimāṇaṁ vibhuparimāṇena । tathāca niratiśayaṁ jñānaṁ sarvajñatvamantarā nopapadyate iti siddhaṁ sarvajñatvam । tasya jīve bādhāditarasmin kalpanā syāt । tadapekṣayā śrutisiddhānāṁ śivanārāyaṇādīnāmupādhibhedena bhinnatvenāvagamyamānānāṁ kalpanaṁ sādhīya iti dik ॥ 25 ॥
tasya bhagavato brahmadibhyo bhedamāha –
pūrveṣāmapi guruḥ kālenānavacchedāt ॥ 26 ॥
sa īśvaraḥ pūrveṣāṁ sargādāvutpannānāṁ hiraṇyagarbhādīnāṁ kālaparicchinnānāṁ gururdharmārthakāmamokṣopadeṣṭā। kālenānavacchedāt । anadyanantatvādityarthaḥ ॥ 26 ॥
idānīṁ parameśvaraṁ nirūpya tatpraṇidhānaṁ vaktuṁ rahasyamāha –
tasya vācakaḥ praṇavaḥ ॥ 27 ॥
tasyeśvarasya । praṇava oṅkāraḥ ॥ 27 ॥
evaṁ vācakamuktvā praṇidhānamāha –
tajjapastadarthabhāvanam ॥ 28 ॥
tasya praṇavasya japaḥ praṇavābhidheyasyeśvarasya bhāvanam । evaṁ praṇavaṁ japatastadarthaṁ ca bhāvayataścittamekāgraṁ bhavati ॥ 28 ॥
samādhilābharūpaphalamuktvā phalāntaramapi tadanuguṇamāha –
tataḥ pratyaktcetanādhigamo'pyantarāyābhāvaśca ॥ 29 ॥
pratīpaṁ viparītamañcati jānātīti pratyag bhrānta ityarthaḥ । aneneśvarādbheda uktaḥ । pratyak cāsau cetanaśca tasyādhigamaḥ sākṣātkārastataḥ praṇidhānādbhavati । apicāntarāyāṇāmabhāvo bhavati ॥ 29 ॥
antarāyānāha –
vyādhistyānasaṁśayapramādālasyāviratibhrāntidarśanālabdhabhūmikatvānavasthitatvāni citavikṣepāste'ntarāyāḥ ॥ 30 ॥
ye cittaṁ yogādvikṣipanti te vikṣepā yogasyāntarāyā vighnā nava । tatra vātādīnāmindriyāṇāṁ ca vaiṣamyaṁ vyādhiḥ । styānaṁ cittalaghutve'pi karmānarhatā । saṁśayaḥ siddhyati na veti । pramādo yogāṅānāmananuṣṭhānalakṣaṇaḥ । ālasyaṁ cittasya gurutvādapravṛttiḥ । aviratirviṣayatṛṣṇā । bhrāntidarśanam ekakoṭiviparyayaḥ । alabdhabhūmikatvaṁ samādhibhūmyalābhaḥ । madhumatyādayaḥ samādhibhūmayo vakṣyante । anavasthitatvaṁ nāma labdhāyāṁ bhūmau cittasyā'sthiratvam । pūrvabhūmau sthiraṁ hi cittam uttarabhūmiṁ jayet । tasmādasthiratvaṁ doṣaḥ ॥ 30 ॥
na kevalamete yoganāśākāḥ, kintu duḥkhādīnapi kurvantītyāha –
duḥkhadaurmanasyāṅgamejayatvaśvāsapraśvāsā vikṣepasahabhuvaḥ ॥ 31 ॥
duḥkhaṁ śārīraṁ kāmajaṁ mānasaṁ vyāghrādijamādhibhautikam । grahapīḍādijamādhidaivikam । daurmanasyamicchāvighātāt । kṣobho manasi । aṅgamejayato bhāvo'ṅgamejayatvaṁ । aṅgānāṁ kampa ityarthaḥ । aniṣkṛtaḥ prāṇo yad bāhyaṁ vāyumantaḥpraveśayati sa śvāsaḥ । samādhyaṅgarecakavirodhītyarthaḥ । evamanicchataḥ koṣṭhasthasya vāyorbahirgamanaṁ praśvāsaḥ pūrakavirodhāt । etairvikṣepaiḥ saha bhavantītyarthaḥ ॥ 31 ॥
īśvarapraṇidhānādeteṣāmabhāva ityuktamupasaṁharati –
tatpratiṣedhārthamekatattvābhyāsaḥ ॥ 32 ॥
vikṣepāṇāṁ nāśārthamekatattvābhyāso'bhimatadhyānaṁ kāryamityarthaḥ ॥ 32 ॥
tasya cittasyāsūyādimalavato yogasambhavāttanmalanirāsopāyamāha –
maitrīkaruṇāmuditopekṣāṇāṁ sukhaduḥkhapuṇyāpuṇyaviṣayāṇāṁ bhāvanātaścitaprasādanam ॥ 33 ॥
maitrī sukhiṣu mitratā । duḥkhiṣu karuṇā dayā । puṇyavṛttiṣu harṣo muditam । apuṇyaśabditapāpādike upekṣāṁ bhāvayet । tayā vṛttyā cittasya prasādanaṁ bhavati । sukhādiṣu yathākramamuktabhāvanayā sāttviko dharmo jāyate । tena ca śuklena dharmeṇa cittaṁ prasannaṁ bhavati । prasanne ca sthitipadaṁ labhate ॥ 33 ॥
evaṁ maitryādibhāvanayā prasannasya cittasya sthityupāyānāha-
pracchardanavidhāraṇābhyāṁ vā prāṇasya ॥ 34 ॥
nāsikāpuṭābhyāṁ prāṇasya praccharddanaṁ recanam । recitasya prāṇasya bahireva vidhāraṇaṁ kumbhakam । yathāśakti tābhyāmekatra lakṣye cittaṁ sthitiṁ labhate । prāṇajaye cittajayastayoravibhāgāt prāṇāyāmasya sarvapāpanāśakatvāt pāpanivṛttau cittaṁ sthiraṁ bhavati । vā śabdo vakṣyamāṇopāyavikalpārthaḥ ॥ 34 ॥
upāyāntaramāha –
viṣayavatī vā pravṛttirutpannā manasaḥ sthitinibandhanī ॥ 35 ॥
nāsāgre cittasya saṁyamāddivyagandhasākṣātkāro bhavati । evaṁ rasanādāvapi jñeyam । tāḥ saṁvido viṣayavatyaḥ pravṛttayaḥ śīghramutpannāḥ satyo viśvāsamutpādyeśvarādyatisūkṣme lakṣye manasaḥ sthitiṁ nibadhnantītyarthaḥ । tathā ca śāstrīyānubhavaviśeṣe jāte śraddhayā yogī yaḥ ko'pi pravarttata iti bhāvaḥ ॥ 35 ॥
viśokā vā jyotiṣmatī ॥ 36 ॥
aṣṭadaladhyānādikrameṇa manasaḥ saṁyamājjyotiḥsvarūpātmaviṣayā jyotiṣmatī viśokā duḥkharahitā saṁvidutpadyate sā manasaḥ sthitiheturityarthaḥ ॥ 36 ॥
vītarāgaviṣayaṁ vā cittam ॥ 37 ॥
vītarāgaṁ yaccittaṁ parityaktaviṣayābhilāṣamityarthaḥ । tadviṣayaṁ tatra dhāryamāṇaṁ yoginaścittaṁ sthitipadaṁ prāpnotītyarthaḥ ॥ 37 ॥
svapnanidrājñānālambanaṁ vā ॥ 38 ॥
atra jñānaśabdo jñeyaparaḥ ॥ svapne bhagavato yadrūpaṁ bhagavato'tyantapriyamārādhayanneva prabuddhastatraiva cittaṁ dhārayet । nidrāyāṁ tu suptau yat sukhaṁ tatra dhārayet । evaṁ svapnanidrānte sālambanaṁ cittaṁ sthitiṁ prāpnotītyarthaḥ ॥ 38 ॥
yathābhimatadhyānādvā ॥ 39 ॥
kiṁ bahunā, kṛṣṇādirūpaṁ yadeveṣṭaṁ tadeva dhyāyet । tatra labdhasthitikamanyatrāpi labhate ॥ 39 ॥
cittasthitijayasya jñāpakamāha –
paramāṇuparamamahattvānto'sya vaśīkāraḥ ॥ 40 ॥
asya sūkṣme niviśamānasya vaśīkāro'pratighātaḥ । sa eva jñāpakamityarthaḥ ॥ 40 ॥
samprajñātayogasya viṣayaṁ svarūpaṁ ca nirdiśati-
kṣīṇavṛtterabhijātasyeva maṇergrahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyeṣu tatsthatadañjanatā samāpattiḥ ॥ 41 ॥
atra pāṭhakramādarthakramo balīyān । tathācābhyāsavairāgyābhyāṁ kṣīṇarajastamovṛttikasya tattadrūpatā tasyāḥ samyagāpattiḥsamprajñāta ityarthaḥ । sa ca vitarkādiviṣayabhedāccaturvidhaḥ । tatra dṛṣṭāntamāha ॥ abhijātasya svacchasya maṇerjapākusumādyuparaktasya svarūpābhibhavena raktādyākāratā yathā bhavati tathetyarthaḥ ॥ 41 ॥
so'pi saṁprajñātaḥ savitarkanirvitarkasavicāranirvicārabhedaiścaturdhā ।tatra savitarkāyāḥ svarūpamāha–
tatra śabdārthajñānavikalpaiḥ saṁkīrṇā savitarkā samāpattiḥ ॥ 42 ॥
tatra tāsu madhye savitarkā samāpattireṣā jñeyā । tathāhi । gaurityukte śabdārthajñānāni trīṇyabhinnāni । tatra gaurityeko vikalpaḥ । ayaṁ hi gaurityupāttayorarthajñānayoḥ śabdābhedaviṣayakaḥ । tathā samādhiprajñā śabdārthajñānavikalpaiḥ saṅkīrṇā taistulyā bhavati । vikalpatvāviśeṣāt ॥ 42 ॥
nirvitarkāmāha –
smṛtipariśuddhau svarūpaśūnyevārthamātranirbhāsā nirvitarkā ॥ 43 ॥
gavādiśabdānāṁ saṅketo vikalpiteṣveva loke gṛhyate । tasya smṛtyā śābdajñānaṁ parārthānumitiśca vikalpa eva jāyate । tatra smṛtipariśuddhau satyām arthamātratātparyavatā cittenārthamātrā'vabhāsāt । saṅketasmṛtestyāge sati savikalpatyāgādarthamātramavikalpitārtharūpaṁ yadgrāhyaṁ tatsvarūpeṇaiva nirbhāsamānā nirvitarkā samāpattirityarthaḥ ॥ 43 ॥
etayaiva savicārā nirvicārā ca sūkṣmaviṣayā vyākhyātā ॥ 44 ॥
viśiṣṭeṣu svavācakaśabdajñānābhyāsabhedena vikalpiteṣu yā samāpattiḥ sā savicāretyucyate । teṣveva viśeṣaṇaśūnyeṣu arthamātreṣu yā samāpattiḥ sā nirvicāreti bhāvaḥ ॥ 44 ॥
nanu kimasyā grāhyasamāpatteḥ paramāṇuṣvevāvasānam ? netyāha –
sūkṣmaviṣayatvaṁ cāliṅgaparyavasānam ॥ 45 ॥
asyāḥ samāpatteḥ sūkṣmaviṣayatvam aliṅge pradhāne paryavasyati । pradhānaṁ vilayaṁ na gacchatītyaliṅgamucyate । puruṣasya sattve'pi anupādānatvāt pradhānaparyantameva samāpattiriti siddham ॥ 45 ॥
evaṁ sthūle sūkṣme ca grāhye catasraḥ samāpattaya uktāḥ । samprati tāsāṁ samprajñātatvamupasaṁharati –
tā eva sabījaḥ samādhiḥ ॥ 46 ॥
grahaṇagrahītrorapi savikalpatvanirvikalpatvabhedena sānandā ānandamātrā sāsmitā asmitāmātrā ceti catasraḥ samāpattayo bhavanti uktanyāyasāmyāt । evamaṣṭasamāpattayo yāstā eva sabījaḥ samādhiḥ samprajñātaḥ । vivekakhyātyabhāvena bandhabījasattvāt sabījatvaṁ draṣṭavyam ॥ 46 ॥
tatra nirvicārasamāpatteḥ phalato'tiśayamāha –
nirvicāravaiśāradye'dhyātmaprasādaḥ ॥ 47 ॥
rajastamomalāpetasya saṁprajñātasya antaḥkaraṇasya yo nirvicāraḥ sūkṣmavastuviṣayakanirvikalpakasamādhistasya vaiśāradye pravāharūpapāṭave sati adhyātmaprasādo'tyantasattvodreko bhavatītyarthaḥ ॥ 47 ॥
tatphalamāha –
ṛtaṁbharā tatra prajñā ॥ 48 ॥
tatra ṛtaṁ satyameva gṛhṇāti prajñāyate । tathāca nirodhasamādhirūpasya yogasya puṇyaviśeṣadvārā yathārthapratyakṣahetutvamitibhāvaḥ ॥ 48 ॥
ata eva tasya klṛptamābhyo viṣayato viśeṣamāha –
śrutānumānaprajñābhyāmanyaviṣayā viśeṣārthatvāt ॥ 49 ॥
śabdānumānayoḥ padārthatāvacchedakavyāpakatāvacchedakapuraskāreṇaiva jñānajanakatvāttadgrahaṇāyogya-viśeṣaviṣayakatvāditi yāvat ।
vedāntinastu śabdasya padārthatāvacchedakapuraskāreṇaiva jñānajanakatve mānābhāvaḥ । tathāca śabdasya viṣayastacchakyo tallakṣyaśca grāhyaḥ । tena ca brāhmaṇaśabdalakṣyatve'pi na kṣatiḥ । tathā ca mahāvākyārthabodhaprayojakībhūtā'vāntaravākyasthapadajanyasmṛtikāraṇībhūtānubhavajanakatvam asamprajñātayogasya svajanyadharmadvāreti na ko'pi virodho, na vā mahāvākyārthabodhānupapattirapīti bhāva iti prāhuḥ । yathā ca padārthatāvacchedakapuraskāreṇaiva jñānajanakatvaniyamābhāvastathāvyaktamākara iti dik ॥ 49 ॥
nanvanādinā śabdādiviṣayabhogasaṁskāreṇātibalīyasā'bhihatā samādhiprajñā na sthitiṁ labheta ityata āha –
tajjaḥ saṁskāro'nyasaṁskārapratibandhī ॥ 50 ॥
nirvicārasamādhiprajñājanyaḥ saṁskāro vyutthānasaṁskārasya pratibandhī bādhaka ityarthaḥ । kathametaditicet । prajñāsaṁskārasya tattvasaṁsparśitvāditi dhyeyam ॥ 50 ॥
nanu saṁprajñātasaṁskāraprabalaṁ cittaṁ tatprajñāparamparāmeva janayet । tathāca kathaṁ nirbījasamādhiṁ kuryāt tatrāha –
tasyāpi nirodhe sarvanirodhānnirbījaḥ samādhiḥ ॥ 51 ॥
puruṣakhyātyanantaraṁ paravairāgyasaṁskārapracayena tasya samprajñātasamādhiprajñāsaṁskārasya, apiśabdāt prajñāyāśca nirodhe sati sarvasya prajñātajjasaṁskārapravāhasya nirodhādavasitādhikāratvena cittasya kṛtyābhāvānnimittāpāye naimittakāpāya iti nyāyena nirbījaḥ samādhirbhavati ॥ 51 ॥
iti samādhipādaṭīkāyāṁ pātañjale sāṁkhyapravacane yogaśāstre samādhipādaḥ prathamaḥ samāptaḥ ॥ 1 ॥
