yadbhāvanādavāpīyaṁ pratyakcitiranāmayā ।
kleśakarmādyasaṁspṛṣṭaṁ tamīśaṁ kañcanābhaje ॥ 1 ॥
śrīmatpatañjalestasya padadvandvamaninditam ।
vande yena manaḥkāyavācāṁ śuddhirakāryasau ॥ 2 ॥
vidyāratnaṁ mayā labdhaṁ yatkṛpāpāravāridheḥ ।
vande tānvibudhairvandyānvandakānandadāngurūn ॥ 3 ॥
śrīmaddeśikavaktrābjānniśamyātha viloḍya tām ।
phaṇīndrabhaṇiteḥ kācidvṛttirārabhyate mayā ॥ 4 ॥
iha khalu bhagavānpatañjaliḥ prekṣāvatpravṛttyaupayikaṁ śāstrapratipādyaṁ darśayati –
atha yogānuśāsanam ॥ 1 ॥
atra athaśabdaḥ ārambhārthaḥ, arthānmaṅgalārthaśca । ’yuja samādhau’ iti dhātoryogaḥ samādhiḥ ; tasyānuśāsanaṁ hairaṇyagarbhe śāstramanusṛtya śiṣyate vyākhyāyate sasādhanaḥ saphalaḥ samādhiranenetyanuśāsanaṁ śāstram । tathā ca kasmaicitkaivalyakāmāya pratipādyayogapratipādakaṁ śāstramārabhyata ityakṣarārthaḥ । tatra samādhirdvividhaḥ saṁprajñāto'saṁprajñātaśceti । sa ca cittasya dharmaḥ । cittaṁ hi triguṇātmakatvātpañcabhūmyupetam। bhūmayaśca – kṣiptaṁ mūḍhaṁ vikṣiptamekāgraṁ niruddhamiti । tatra – rajasā viṣayeṣu kṣipyamāṇaṁ kṣiptam ; tamasā nidrālasyādivṛttimanmūḍham ; īṣadrajastamaḥsaṁspṛṣṭena sattvena kādācitkadhyānayuktayā kṣiptādviśiṣṭaṁ vikṣiptam; vidhūtarajastamomalena śuddhasattvenaikāgramekatānam ; praśāntasakalavṛttikaṁ saṁskāraśeṣaṁ niruddham । evaṁ ca ādyābhūmitrayaparityāgenāvaśiṣṭabhūmidvayopetasya cittasya samādhidvayaṁ dharma iti vivekaḥ ॥
adhunā dvividhasya samādheḥ sādhāraṇaṁ lakṣaṇaṁ lakṣayati –
yogaścittavṛttinirodhaḥ ॥ 2 ॥
rajastamovṛttyornirodho yoga ityarthaḥ । ataḥ sāttvikavṛttisattve'pi saṁprajñāte nāvyāptiḥ ॥ 2 ॥
nanu buddhivṛttisvabhāvāyāścitiśaktervṛttinirodhe kathaṁ sthitirityāśaṅkyāha –
tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe'vasthānam ॥ 3 ॥
yadā sarvāsāṁ vṛttīnāṁ nirodhaḥ, tadā draṣṭuścitiśakteḥ svābhāvike svarūpe sthitiḥ kusumāpagame sphaṭikamaṇerivetyarthaḥ । citiśakteścaitanyamātraṁ svabhāvo na vṛttaya iti bhāvaḥ ॥ 3 ॥
nanu tarhi vyutthāne citiśakteḥ svarūpātpracyutiḥ syādityatrāha –
vṛttisārupyamitaratra ॥ 4 ॥
yadyapi nirvikārā citiśaktiḥ sadā svarūpa evāvatiṣṭhate, tathāpi nirodhādanyatra vṛttiṣūtpadyamānāsu tatra citicchāyāyāṁ pratibimbitāyāṁ tadavivekāttattādātmyamāpanneva citiśaktirbhavati japārakta iva sphaṭikaḥ । ato na svarūpātpracyutiḥ । na hi lauhityabhramasamaye samasti sphaṭikamaṇeravadātasvabhāvātpracyutiriti bhāvaḥ । etena sūtradvayenārthādyannirodhe citiśaktiḥ svarūpapratiṣṭhā yadvyutthāne svarūpāpratiṣṭheva bhavati taccittamiti dvitīyasūtragatacittapadaṁ vyākhyātaṁ bhavati ॥ 4 ॥
adhunā niroddhavyānāṁ vṛttīnāmiyattāmāha –
vṛttayaḥ pañcatayyaḥ kliṣṭākliṣṭāḥ ॥ 5 ॥
pañca tayabarthā avayavā vakṣyamāṇāḥ pramāṇādayo yāsāṁ sāmānyavṛttīnāṁ tāḥ pañcatayyo vṛttayaścittasya pariṇāmāḥ । bahuvacanaṁ tu maitrādipuruṣabahutvābhiprāyeṇa । tāḥ kīdṛśyaḥ ? kliṣṭā akliṣṭāḥ ; vakṣyamāṇaiḥ kleśaiḥ saṁśliṣṭāḥ svarūpāpratiṣṭhāpratyayāḥ kliṣṭāḥ, tairasaṁśliṣṭāḥ svarūpapratiṣṭhāpratyayā akliṣṭāḥ । yadyapi pañcasveva kliṣṭānāmakliṣṭānāṁ cāntarbhāvaḥ, tathāpi kliṣṭā eva niroddhavyā iti mandabuddhiṁ vārayituṁ tābhiḥ sahākliṣṭāḥ apyudāhṛtāḥ ॥ 5 ॥
atha nāmadheyalakṣaṇābhyāṁ vṛttīrviśadayituṁ sūtraṣaṭkamācaṣṭe –
pramāṇaviparyayavikalpanidrāsmṛtaya ॥ 6 ॥
ato'parā vṛttirna samastītyuddeśasūtrasya phalam ॥ 6 ॥
pratyakṣānumānāgamāḥ pramāṇāni ॥ 7 ॥
trīṇyeva pramāṇānīti bhāvaḥ । vṛttāvajñātārthāvagāhī citiśakteḥ pratibimbaḥ pramā । tatkaraṇaṁ vṛttiḥ pramāṇam । tattvaṁ pramāṇasāmānyalakṣaṇam । tatra cakṣurādidvārā vyaktiviśeṣanirdhāraṇī cittavṛttiḥ pratyakṣapramāṇam । tadākāravṛttau citiśakteḥ pratibimbaḥ pratyakṣapramā । evaṁ dhyānasamādhidvārā citiśaktiviśeṣāvadyotikā saṁprajñātākhyā cittavṛttiḥ pratyakṣapramāṇam । jñātā citiśaktiḥ phalam । liṅgajñānadvārā liṅgisāmānyanirdhāraṇī vṛttiranumānam । tatra pratibimbo'numitiḥ । padārthajñānadvārā vākyārthāvagāhinī vṛttirāgamaḥ । tatra pratibimbaḥ śābdaḥ । anumānāgamāvubhayatra samānāviti pṛthaṅnodāhṛtau ॥ 7 ॥
viparyayo mithyājñānamatadrūpapratiṣṭham ॥ 8 ॥
viparyaya iti lakṣyanirdeśaḥ । mithyājñānaṁ bādhānantaraṁ vyavahārājanakaṁ yat atadrūpapratiṣṭhaṁ tasyārthasya yadrūpaṁ pāramārthikaṁ svarūpaṁ tatrāpratiṣṭhitaṁ tadanavagāhi । tattvaṁ lakṣaṇam । ato na vikalpe'tivyāptiḥ, tasya bādhitatve'pi keṣāñcitpaṇḍitānāṁ vyavahārajanakatvāt । nāpi saṁśaye, tasyāpi lakṣyatvāt ॥ 8 ॥
śabdajñānānupātī vastuśūnyo vikalpaḥ ॥ 9 ॥
’rāhoḥ śiraḥ’ iti śabdaśravaṇānantaraṁ jāyamānā vastuśūnyā vṛttirvikalpaḥ । ato vākyārthagocaravṛttau nātivyāptiḥ, tasyā vastuśūnyatvābhāvāt । nāpi viparyaye, tasya śabdajñānānanupātitvāt ॥ 9 ॥
abhāvaprayayālambanā vṛttirnidrā ॥ 10 ॥
vastvabhāvaḥ pratīyate yasminnāvārake tamasi sati, tattamo'bhāvapratyayaḥ । taṁ viṣayīkurvatī vṛttirnidrā। tasyā ’sukhamahamasvāpsaṁ na kiñcidavediṣam’ iti smaraṇasyānubhavapūrvakatvādvṛttitvam ॥
anubhūtaviṣayāsaṁpramoṣaḥ smṛtiḥ ॥ 11 ॥
anubhūtasya pitrādeḥ asaṁpramoṣaḥ tadanubhavajanyamanusandhānaṁ smṛtirityarthaḥ । etena vṛttaya ityādyanubhūtaviṣayetyantena sūtrasaptakena dvitīyasūtragatavṛttipadaṁ vyākhyātaṁ bhavati । ito'vaśiṣṭena pādena nirodhṛpadamarthādvyākhyāyata iti draṣṭavyam ॥
abhyāsavairāgyābhyāṁ tannirodhaḥ ॥ 12 ॥
cittasya nisargatonirgatasragādigocaravṛttisaritpūraṁ vairāgyeṇa vinivārya samādhyabhyāsena praśāntavāhaḥ saṁpādyate । atastadubhayanibandhano nirodha ityarthaḥ ॥ 12 ॥
nanu japādāvāvṛttilakṣaṇo'bhyāso vidhātuṁ pāryate ; ko nāma nirodhe'bhyāsa ityata āha –
tatra sthitau yatnā'bhyāsaḥ ॥ 13 ॥
tatra tayormadhye । sthitirnaiścalyaṁ nirodhaḥ, tatra । ’carmaṇi dvīpinaṁ hanti’ itivannimittārtheyaṁ saptamī । evaṁ ca sthitinimittako yatno mānasa utsāhaḥ svata eva bahiḥpravāhaśīlaṁ cittaṁ sarvathā nirotsyāmītyevaṁvidha utsāha āvartyamāno'bhyāsa ityucyate ॥ 13 ॥
nanvadyatanābhyāsaḥ svayamadṛḍhaḥ sannanādisañcitavyutthānasaṁskārānkathamabhibhavedityāśaṅkyāha-
sa tu dīrghakālanairantaryasatkārāsevito dṛḍhabhūmiḥ ॥ 14 ॥
yadi divasairmāsairvā samādhisiddhiṁ vāñchet, tadā ’vidyamānāścatvāra eva vedāḥ ; tānadhyetuṁ gatasya māṇavakasya pañca divasā atītāḥ ; nādyāpyasau samāgataḥ’ iti mūḍhavacanānusāryevāyaṁ yogī syāt । ataḥ saṁvatsarairjanmabhirvā dīrghakālaṁ yoga āsevitavyaḥ । tathā ca smaryate – ’anekajanmasaṁsiddhastato yāti parāṁ gatim’ iti । yadi ciramāsevyamāno'pi vicchidya vicchidyāsevyeta tarhyutpadyamānā yogasaṁskārāḥ samanantarabhāvivicchedakālīnairvyutthānasaṁskārairabhibhūyeran । ato nirantaramāsevitavyaḥ । satkāra ādaraḥ। anādare layavikṣepakaṣāyādayaḥ prasajjeran । tasmādādareṇāsevitavyaḥ । dīrghakālāditraividhyenāsevitasya samādherdṛḍhabhūmitvaṁ nāma prabalataraduḥkhenāpi cālayitumaśakyatvam । tacca smaryate – ’yasminsthito na duḥkhena guruṇāpi vicālyate’ iti ॥ 14 ॥
atha vairāgyaṁ dvividhamaparaṁ paraṁ ceti । aparaṁ ca yatamānavyatirekaikendriyavaśīkārabhedena caturvidham । tatrādyatrayamarthātsūcayansākṣāccaturthamāha –
dṛṣṭānuśravikaviṣayavitṛṣṇasya vaśīkārasaṁjñā vairāgyam ॥ 15 ॥
srakcandanādayo viṣayā dṛṣṭāḥ । vedoktasvargādaya ānuśravikāḥ । tatrobhayatrāpi satyāmapi tṛṣṇāyāṁ vivekatāratamyena yatamānādivairāgyatrayaṁ bhavati । yatamānatvaṁ nāma ’asmiñjagati kiṁ sāraṁ kimasāramiti guruśāstrābhyāṁ vijñāsyāmi’ ityudyogaḥ । svacitte pūrvaṁ vidyamānānāṁ doṣāṇāṁ madhye'bhyasyamānena vivekenaitāvantaḥ pakvā etāvanto'vaśiṣṭā iti vivecanaṁ vyatirekaḥ । dṛṣṭānuśravikaviṣayapravṛtterduḥkhātmakatvabodhena tāṁ pravṛttiṁ parityajya manasyautsukyamātreṇa tṛṣṇāsthāpanamekendriyatvam । vitṛṣṇatvaṁ vaśīkāraḥ । tadidamaparaṁ vairāgyamaṣṭāṅgayogapravartakatvena saṁprajñātasyāntaraṅgam, asaṁprajñātasya tu bahiraṅgam ॥ 15 ॥
atha tasyāntaraṅgaṁ paravairāgyamāha –
tatparaṁ puruṣakhyāterguṇavetṛṣṇyam ॥ 16 ॥
saṁprajñātasamādhyābhyāsapāṭavena guṇatrayātmakātpradhānādviviktasya puruṣasya khyātiḥ sākṣātkāraḥ ; tasmādaśeṣaguṇatrayavyavahāre vaitṛṣṇyaṁ yat, tatparaṁ vairāgyamityarthaḥ ॥ 16 ॥
itthamabhyāsavairāgye nirūpya tatsādhyaṁ samādhimāha –
vitarkavicārānandāsmitārūpānugamātsaṁprajñātaḥ ॥ 17 ॥
samyakprajñāyate yena bhāvyaṁ vastu sa saṁprajñātaḥ samādhirbhāvanāviśeṣaḥ । sa ca vitarkādirūpaiścaturbhiranugamāccaturvidhaḥ – savitarkaḥ savicāraḥ sānandaḥ sāsmita iti । tatra bhāvanayā bhāvyabhūtendriyagocarasākṣātkāraḥ savitarkaḥ । pañcatanmātrāntaḥkaraṇagocarasākṣātkāraḥ savicāraḥ । rajastamoleśānuviddhasattvapradhānabuddhigocarasākṣātkāraḥ sānandaḥ । śuddhasattvapradhānamahattattvagocara-sākṣātkāraḥ sāsmitaḥ । tatra vitarkavicāradvayaṁ grāhyam । ānando grahaṇam । asmitākhyo grahītā । teṣu grāhyagrahaṇagrahītṛṣu bhāvanotkarṣaḥ saṁprajñāto yoga ityarthaḥ ॥ 17 ॥
itthamaparavairāgyasādhyaṁ saṁprajñātaṁ nirūpya paravairāgyasādhyamasaṁprājñātamāha –
virāmapratyayābhyāsapūrvaḥ saṁskāraśeṣo'nyaḥ ॥ 18 ॥
virāmo vṛttyuparamaḥ, tasya pratyayaḥ kāraṇaṁ vṛttyuparamārthaḥ prayatnaḥ, tasyābhyāsaḥ paunaḥpunyena saṁpādanam, tatpūrvastajjanyaḥ saṁprajñātādanyaḥ saṁskāraśeṣaḥ praśāntasakalavṛttikasya cittasvarūpasya durlakṣatvātsaṁskārarūpeṇa yo'vaśiṣyate so'sraṁprajñāta ityarthaḥ ॥ 18 ॥
so'yamasaṁprajñāto dvividho bhavapratyaya upāyapratyayaśceti । tatrādyo mokṣyamāṇairheyaḥ । tamāha-
bhavaprayayo videhaprakṛtilayānām ॥ 19 ॥
bhavantyasmiñjantava iti bhavaḥ saṁsāro'vidyākhyāḥ, sapratyayo heturyasya sa saṁsāramūlo'saṁprajñātaḥ । sa ca bhūtendriyeṣvātmatvabhāvanayā vidhūtadehānāṁ videhānām avyaktamahadahaṅkārapañcatanmātreṣu prakṛtiṣvātmabhāvanayā līnānāṁ prakṛtilayānāṁ bhavatyantavatphalaḥ । tadīyaṁ cittaṁ vivekakhyātyabhāvātsuptacittavallīnamapyutthāya saṁsāre patatīti bhāvaḥ ॥
atha mumukṣubhirupādeyamupāyapratyayamāha –
śraddhāvīryasmṛtisamādhiprajñāpūrvaka itareṣām ॥ 20 ॥
mamāyaṁ yoga eva parapuruṣārthasādhanamiti pratyayaḥ śraddhā । sā cotkarṣaśravaṇenopajāyate । utkarṣaśca smaryate – ’tapasvibhyo'dhiko yogī jñānibhyo'pi mato'dhikaḥ । karmibhyaścādhiko yogī tasmādyogī bhavārjuna’ iti । tasyāṁ ca śraddhāyāmavasitāyāṁ vīryamutsāho bhavati ’sarvathā yogaṁ saṁpādayiṣyāmi’ iti । etādṛśotsāhena tadā tadānuṣṭheyāni yogāṅgāni smaryante । tayā ca smṛtyā samyaganuṣṭhitasamādheradhyātmaprasāde sati, ṛtambharā prajñodeti । tatpūrvakastatprajñāpūrvako'saṁprajñātasamādhiḥ itareṣāṁ videhaprakṛtilayebhyo'rvācīnānāṁ yogināṁ sidhyatītyarthaḥ ॥ 20 ॥
itthaṁ paravairāgyasādhyaṁ samādhiṁ vidhāya tasya tāratamyena samādheḥ śaighrayatāratamyamāha –
tīvrasaṁvegānāmāsannaḥ ॥ 21 ॥
saṁvego vairāgyam । tadbhedādyoginastrividhā mṛdusaṁvegā madhyasaṁvegāstīvrasaṁvegāśceti । tatra tīvrasaṁvegānāmāsannaḥ samādhilābhaḥ । alpenaiva kālena samādhirlabhyata ityarthaḥ ॥ 21 ॥
tīvrasaṁvegeṣveva tāratamyamāha –
mṛdumadhyādhimātratvāttato'pi viśeṣaḥ ॥ 22 ॥
mṛdutīvro madhyatīvro'dhimātratīvraśca । teṣvapyuttarottarasya tvarayā siddhirdraṣṭavyā । tadevamadhimātratīvrasya dṛḍhabhūmāvasaṁprajñātasamādhau labdhe sati; punarvyutthātumaśaktaṁ sanmano naśyati । tataḥ pratyakcitiḥ sve mahimni nirvighnaṁ nirantaramavatiṣṭhata ityarthaḥ ॥ 22 ॥
athāsannatamasamādhilobha upāyāntaramupadarśayati -
īśvarapraṇidhānādvā ॥ 23 ॥
īśvaro vakṣyamāṇalakṣaṇaḥ । tasminparamagurau praṇidhānaṁ bhāvanāviśeṣaḥ । tasmādāsannatamaḥ samādhilābhaḥ । īśvaro hi samārādhanādinā sādhanena ārādhitaḥ ’idamasyeṣṭamastu’ iti saṁsārāṅgāre tapyamānaṁ puruṣamanugṛhṇātīti bhāvaḥ । nanu puṣkarapalāśavannirlepasya puruṣasya tapyabhāvaḥ kathamupapadyate yena parameśvaro'nugrāhakatayā kakṣīkriyeteti cet, ucyate – tāpakasya rajasaḥ sattvameva tapyam । buddhyātmanā pariṇate sattve tapyamāne tadārohavaśena tadabhedāvagāhī puruṣo'pi tapyata ityupacaryate । taduktam – ’ sattvaṁ tapyaṁ buddhibhāvena vṛttaṁ bhāvā ye vā rājasāstāpakāste । tasyābhedagrāhiṇī tāmasī yā vṛttistasyāṁ tapya ityukta ātmā’ iti । itthaṁ tapyamānaṁ puruṣaṁ parameśvaraḥ svecchayā nirmāṇakāyamadhiṣṭhāya laukikavaidikasampradāyapradyotako'nugṛhṇātītyanavadyam ॥ 23 ॥
kaḥ punaḥ sa īśvaraḥ ityatrāha –
kleśakarmavipākāśayairaparāmṛṣṭaḥ puruṣaviśeṣa īśvaraḥ ॥ 24 ॥
kliśnantīti kleśā vakṣyamāṇalakṣaṇā avidyādayaḥ । karma miśrāmiśrarūpaṁ vakṣyamāṇam । vipacyata iti vipākaḥ phalaṁ jātyāyurbhogādiḥ । āśerata ityāśayāḥ saṁskārāḥ । tairaparāmṛṣṭo'saṁśliṣṭaḥ । saṁśliṣṭastu saṁsārī jīvaḥ । muktastvasaṁśliṣṭo'pi pūrvakāle tatsaṁśleṣādbaddha iva । ataḥ puruṣaviśeṣo nityamukta īśvaraḥ । tasya sārvajñyamaiśvaryaṁ ca anādisiddhaprākṛtaśuddhasattvātmakacittasaṁbandhāditi draṣṭavyam ॥ 24 ॥
atha tatra pramāṇamāha –
tatra niratiśayaṁ sarvajñabījam ॥ 25 ॥
tatreśvare niratiśayaṁ sarvajñatvasya bījaṁ mūlam । etaduktaṁ bhavati – asmadādijñānaṁ niratiśayena jñānenāvinābhūtaṁ sātiśayatvāt । yatsātiśayaṁ tatsamānajātīyena niratiśayena yuktam, yathā vibhuparimāṇena kumbhaparimāṇam । ataḥ pariśeṣādanumānasiddhaniratiśayajñānavānīśvara iti ॥ 25 ॥
nanvayameka eveśvaraḥ kimanye'pi santi ? netyāha –
pūrveṣāmapi guruḥ kālenānavacchedāt ॥ 26 ॥
atha tasya nāmadheyamāha –
tasya vācakaḥ praṇavaḥ ॥ 27 ॥
tasya parameśvarasya praṇavaḥ prakarṣeṇa nūyate stūyate'neneti praṇava oṅkāraḥ vācako'bhidhāyaka ityarthaḥ ॥ 27 ॥
itthaṁ nāmadheyamabhidhāya pūrvam ’īśvarapraṇidhānāt’ ityuktaṁ tatpraṇidhānaṁ saphalamupadarśayati dvābhyām –
tajjapastadarthabhāvanam ॥ 28 ॥
tataḥ pratyaktcetanādhigamo'pyantarāyābhāvaśca ॥ 29 ॥
etaduktaṁ bhavati – tasya praṇavasya yo japaḥ, tasmindīrghakālanairantaryasatkāraistadarthā-saṅgacidrūpeśvarabhāvanāpuraḥsaraṁ prādhānyena dṛḍhamāsevite sati, praścātsvata eva vāgvyāpārarūpe tasminpralīne, vācakasya nyagbhāvāttadarthāsaṅgacidrūpagocaravṛttisantānarūpabhāvanāyāṁ dīrghakālādibhirdṛḍhamāsevitāyām, tatastatprasādena cittaṁ nirodhābhimukhaṁ pratyāsattyabhāvena īśvaraṁ viśrāntibhūmitayālabhamānaṁ sat tatsādṛśyātsvasvāminamasaṅgacidrūpamātmānaṁ smārayitvā aviṣayatayā tamapyalabhamānaṁ nirindhanāgnivatsvayaṁ saṁskārāvaśeṣaṁ bhavati । tataḥ pratyakcetanādhigamaḥ । pratyakcāsau cetanā, tasyāḥ prāptiradhigamaḥ । sarvāntaratayā bhāsamānā citiśaktiḥ sve mahimni nirantaraṁ nirvighnamavatiṣṭhate । ataḥ sarvāsāṁ vṛttīnāṁ pravilayādantarāyābhāvaśca bhavati । ayameka eva īśvarapraṇidhānasya viśeṣa iti ॥
ke te'ntarāyā ityapekṣāyāmāha –
vyādhistyānasaṁśayapramādālasyāviratibhrāntidarśanālabdhabhūmikatvānavasthitatvāni citavikṣepāste'ntarāyāḥ ॥ 30 ॥
ye cittaṁ yogādvikṣipanti bhraṁśayanti te nava vikṣepā yogasyāntarāyā vighnāḥ । tatra doṣatrayavaiṣamyanimitto jvarādirvyādhiḥ । cittasyākarmaṇyatvaṁ styānam । viruddhakoṭidvayāvagāhi jñānaṁ saṁśayaḥ । ahiṁsāsatyādisādhanānāmabhāvanaṁ pramādaḥ । kāyavākcittagurutvādapravṛttirālasyam । viṣayābhilāṣo'viratiḥ । atasmiṁstadbuddhirbhrāntidarśanam । kutaścinnimittātsamādhi-bhūmeralābho'labdhabhūmikatvam । labdhāyāmapi tasyāṁ citasyāpratiṣṭhānavasthitatvamityarthaḥ ॥ 30 ॥
na kevalamete vikṣepā yoganāśakāḥ, api tu upadravakarā ityāha –
duḥkhadaurmanasyāṅgamejayatvaśvāsapraśvāsā vikṣepasahabhuvaḥ ॥ 31 ॥
yathoktavyādhijaṁ duḥkham । taccādhyātmikādibhedāttrividham । viṣayābhilāṣavighātānmanasi kṣobho daurmanasyam । sarvāṅgacalanamaṅgamejayatvam । tacca yogāṅgāsanavirodhi । apānaḥ śvāsaḥ । sa ca recakavirodhī। prāṇaḥ praśvāsaḥ । sa tu pūrakavirodhī । atha vā śvāso bāhyakumbhakavirodhī, praśvāsaḥ āntarakumbhakavirodhī, aṅgamejayatvaṁ kumbhakadvayavirodhītyarthaḥ, ’nocchvasennaiva niśvasyānnaiva gātrāṇi cālayet’ iti kumbhake tanniṣedhaśravaṇāt । ata ete duḥkhādayo vikṣepaiḥ saha bhavanti, vikṣiptacittasya bhavantītyarthaḥ ॥ 31 ॥
itthamantarāyānuktvā te kasmānnāśanīyā ityapekṣāyāṁ pūrvoktamīśvarapraṇidhānamevāsminnaṁśe smārayati-
tatpratiṣedhārthamekatattvābhyāsaḥ ॥ 32 ॥
teṣāṁ sopadravāṇāṁ vikṣepāṇāṁ vināśārthamekatattvasyeśvarasyābhyāsaḥ kartavyaḥ । etaduktaṁ bhavati – ekatattvagocaramanovṛttipravāhānukūlo yatno'bhyāsaḥ । sa ca dīrghakālanairantaryasatkārairdṛḍhamāsevitavyaḥ । āsevite ca tasminvyādhyādayo vāsanāḥ kṣaṇenaiva viśarārutāṁ yānti । taduktam – ’vāsanāsaṁparityāge yadi yatnaṁ karoṣyalam । tatte śithilatāṁ yānti sarvādhivyādhayaḥ kṣaṇāt’ iti ॥ 32 ॥
adhunā saṁprajñātabhūmirūpaikāgratopāyān ’maitrī –“ ityādi ’yathābhimata – ’ ityantena sūtrasaptakenāha–
maitrīkaruṇāmuditopekṣāṇāṁ sukhaduḥkhapuṇyāpuṇyaviṣayāṇāṁ bhāvanātaścitaprasādanam ॥ 33 ॥
cittaṁ hi rāgadveṣapuṇyapāpaiḥ kaluṣīkriyate । tatra svapnādau svenānubhūyamānaṁ sukhamanuśete ’ sarvaṁ sukhajātaṁ me bhūyāt’ iti kaściddhīvṛttiviśeṣo rāgaḥ । sa ca sukhajātasya dṛṣṭādṛṣṭasāmagryabhāvena saṁpādayitumaśakyatvāccittaṁ kaluṣīkaroti । yadā tu sukhiprāṇiṣu maitrīṁ bhāvayet ’sarve'pyete sukhino madīyāḥ’ iti, tadā tatsukhaṁ svakīyameva saṁpannamiti tatra rāgo nivartate । na kevalaṁ rāgaḥ, kiṁ tu paraguṇāsahanadoṣāviṣkaraṇarūpāsūyerṣyādikamapi nivartate । nivṛtte ca rāgāsūyerṣyādau varṣāsvatītāsu śaratsaridiva cittaṁ prasīdati । tathā duḥkhamanuśete ’ sarvaṁ duḥkhaṁ sarvathā me mā bhūt’ iti kaścitpratyayo dveṣaḥ। sa ca vairyādiṣu satsu nivārayitumaśkyatvātsadā hṛdayaṁ dahati । yadā ’svasyeva pareṣāṁ pratikūlaṁ duḥkhaṁ mā bhūt’ ityanena prakāreṇa karuṇāṁ duḥkhiprāṇiṣu bhāvayet, tadā vairyādiṣu dveṣo nivartate । na kevalaṁ dveṣaḥ, kintu duḥkhitvapratiyokasvasukhitvaprayukto darpo'pi nivartate । sa ca darpo bhagavatā darśitaḥ – ’īśvaro'hamahaṁ bhogī siddho'haṁ balavānsukhī । āḍhyo'bhijanavānasmi ko'nyo'sti sadṛśo mayā’ iti । ata ubhayanivṛttau cittaṁ prasīdati । tathā prāṇinaḥ svabhāvata eva puṇyaṁ nānutiṣṭhanti, pāpaṁ prasīdati । tathā prāṇinaḥ svabhāvata eva puṇyaṁ nānutiṣṭhanti, pāpaṁ tvanutiṣṭhanti । ataste puṇyapāpe paścāttāpaṁ janayataḥ । yadi puṇyapuruṣeṣu muditāṁ bhāvayet, tadā tadvāsanayā svayamapyapramattaḥ puṇye pravartate । tathā pāpiṣūpekṣāṁ bhāvayantvayamapi pāpānnivartate।ataḥ paścāttāpābhāvena cittaṁ prasīdati । nanu puṇyātmasu muditāṁ bhāvayataḥ puṇye pravṛttiḥ phalatvenoktā ; sā ca yogino na yuktā, tasya punarjanmakaratvāt । maivam ; kāmyasyeṣṭāpūrtāderjanmahetutvādiha tu yogābhyāsajanyasya janmānāpādakasyāśuklakṛṣṇasya puṇyasya vivakṣitatvāt । vakṣyati ca bhagavānsūtrakāraḥ – ’karmāśuklakṛṣṇaṁ yoginastrividhamitareṣām’ iti । ato maitryādibhāvanayā rāgādivāsanānivṛttau prasādaṁ sthairyamāpannaṁ saccittamekāgratāpadaṁ labhata ityarthaḥ । taduktam – pauruṣeṇa prayatnena balātsantyajya vāsanām । sthitiṁ badhnāsi cettarhi padamāsādayasyalam’ iti ॥ 33 ॥
pracchardanavidhāraṇābhyāṁ vā prāṇasya ॥ 34 ॥
prāṇasya śarīrāntargatasya vāyoḥ pracchardanaṁ dvātriṁśanmātrāpramāṇena śanaiḥ śanaiḥ piṅgalayā bahirvirecanam । recitaṁ praścādiḍayā ṣoḍaśamātrāpramāṇenāntarāpūrya pūritasya punaścatuḥṣaṣṭimātrāpramāṇena vidhāraṇamāntarakumbhakaḥ । recitasya voktapramāṇena bahireva vidhāraṇaṁ bāhyakumbhakaḥ । anena recakapūrakabāhyābhyantarakumbhakarūpaprāṇāyāmatrayaṁ bhavati । tena prāṇaspande niruddhe sati cittadoṣāḥ pradahyante। tathā ca śrutiḥ – ’ yathā parvatadhātūnāṁ dahyante dhamatā malāḥ । tathendriyakṛtā doṣā dahyante prāṇanigrahāt’ iti । tatropapattirvasiṣṭhena darśitā – ’yaḥ prāṇapavanaspandaścittaspandaḥ sa eva hi । prāṇaspandakṣaye yatnaḥ kartavyo dhīmatoccakaiḥ ’ iti । ataḥ prāṇamanaḥspandayoḥ sahabhāvitvātprāṇanigrahe mano nigṛhyate । nanu sahaspando na yuktaḥ, suṣuptau ceṣṭamāne'pi prāṇe manaso'ceṣṭamānatvāt । maivam ; vilīnatvena tadānīṁ manasa evābhāvāt । nanu ’kṣīṇe prāṇe nāsikayocchvāsīta’ iti śrutivyāhatamiti cet, na ; anulbaṇatvasya kṣayatvenātra vivakṣitatvāt । yathā parvatamārohataḥ śvāsavego yāvānbhavati na tāvānāsīnasya vidyate ; tathā prāṇāyāmapāṭavopetasyaitasmādalpaḥ śvāso bhavati । etadevābhipretya śrūyate – ’bhūtvā tatrāyataḥ prāṇaḥ śanaireva samutsṛjet ’ iti । ataḥ prāṇāyāmapāṭavena prāṇe niruddhe sati nirmṛṣṭanikhiladoṣaṁ saccittamekāgratāpadaṁ labhata ityarthaḥ ॥ 34 ॥
viṣayavatī vā pravṛttirutpannā manasaḥ sthitinibandhanī ॥ 35 ॥
nāsāgrajihvāgratālujihvāmadhyajihvāmūleṣu pradeśeṣu cittasya saṁyamāddivyagandharasarūpasparśa-śabdaviṣayavatyaḥ saṁvidaḥ pravṛttayaḥ śīghramutpannāḥ satyo viśvāsamutpādya atisūkṣmeśvarādau manasaḥ sthitiṁ badhnanti । ato mana ekāgratāṁ prāpnotītyartaḥ ॥ 35 ॥
viśokā vā jyotiṣmatī ॥ 36 ॥
aṣṭadalahṛdambujaṁ recakenordhvamukhaṁ nītvā tatkarṇikāsthāyāṁ suṣumnākhyāyāṁ nāḍyāṁ sauracāndramasavaidyutādiprabhānibhasya cittatattvasya dhyānāttajjyotirgocarā saṁvijjyotiṣmatī viśokā śokaśūnyā pravṛttirutpannā satī manasaḥ sthitiṁ sampādayati । tatastanmana ekāgratāṁ labhata ityarthaḥ ॥ 36 ॥
vītarāgaviṣayaṁ vā cittam ॥ 37 ॥
śukādīnāṁ yadvītarāgaṁ cittam , tasya dhyānādyoginaścittaṁ nīrāgaṁ sadekāgratāṁ labhata ityarthaḥ ॥ 37 ॥
svapnanidrājñānālambanaṁ vā ॥ 38 ॥
svapne śāstrīyaṁ yanmanoharaṁ vastu dṛṣṭaṁ suṣuptau yatsukhaṁ jñāyate, tatra dhyānāttajjñeyālambanaṁ cittaṁ niścalaṁ sadekāgratāṁ labhata ityarthaḥ ॥ 38 ॥
yathābhimatadhyānādvā ॥ 39 ॥
kiṁ bahunā? yatheṣṭaṁ yadyacchāstrārthaṁ daivaṁ rūpam, taddhyānāccittamacañcalaṁ sadekāgratāṁ labhata ityarthaḥ ॥ 39 ॥
nanvetairupāyairekāgratālābhe kiṁ jñāpakamityatrāha –
paramāṇuparamamahattvānto'sya vaśīkāraḥ ॥ 40 ॥
asyaikāgratāmāpannasya cittasya sūkṣme sthūle vā vastuni niviśamānasya paramāṇvantaḥ paramamahattvānto vaśīkāro'pratighāto bhavatītyarthaḥ ॥ 40 ॥
itthamekāgratopāyānsāvāntaraphalānuktvā tatsamutpannaikāgratābhivṛddhilakṣaṇasya sabījasamādheḥ saviṣayaṁ svarūpamāha –
kṣīṇavṛtterabhijātasyeva maṇergrahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyeṣu tatsthatadañjanatā samāpattiḥ ॥ 41 ॥
abhijātasyātyavadātasya sphaṭikamaṇeryathā japākusumoparāgātsvarūpābhibhavena raktākāratā bhavati, evaṁ kṣīṇavṛttervidhūtarajastamovṛttikasya cittasya bhūtendriyatanmātrāntaḥkaraṇarajastamoleśānu-viddhāhaṅkāravidhūtarajastamomalaśuddhasattvātmakamahattattveṣu grāhyagrahaṇagrahītṛṣu tatsthasya taduparaktasya tadañjanatā svarūpaparityāgena tattadrūpatā tasya samyagāpattiḥ saṁprajñātasamāpattirityarthaḥ ॥ 41 ॥
tatra śabdārthajñānavikalpaiḥ saṁkīrṇā savitarkā samāpattiḥ ॥ 42 ॥
gauriti śabdaḥ gaurityarthaḥ gauriti jñānam, teṣāṁ parasparatādātmyagocarā ye vikalpāstaiḥ saṅkīrṇā tattulyā savitarkā samāpattiḥ, tasyā vikalpatvāviśeṣādityarthaḥ ॥ 42 ॥
smṛtipariśuddhau svarūpaśūnyevārthamātranirbhāsā nirvitarkā ॥ 43 ॥
śabdajñānābhyāṁ vikalpita evārthe śabdasaṅketo gṛhyate, tasya smṛtyā śābdabodho vikalpa eva jāyate। ataḥ saṅketasmṛteḥ pariśuddhau pralaye sati tatkāryasya vikalpasya pralayātsamādhibhāvanā svīyabhāvanātvaśūnyeva bhūtvā avikalpitārthamātreṇaiva nirbhāsyamānā nirvitarkā samāpattirityarthaḥ ॥
uktanyāyamanyatrātidiśati –
etayaiva savicārā nirvicārā ca sūkṣmaviṣayā vyākhyātā ॥ 44 ॥
etayaiva vikalpitasthūlākārayā savitarkayā avikalpitasthūlākārayā nirvitarkayā ca sūkṣmaviṣayā svaśabdajñānābhyāmabhedena vikalpitasūkṣmatanmātrendriyagocarā savicārā avikalpitasūkṣma-tanmātrendriyagocarā nirvicārā ca vyākhyātā bhavatītyarthaḥ ॥ 44 ॥
kiṁ nirvicārasamāpattestanmātreṣvevāvasānam ? netyāha –
sūkṣmaviṣayatvaṁ cāliṅgaparyavasānam ॥ 45 ॥
asyāḥ samāpatteḥ sūkṣmaviṣayatvamaliṅge pradhāne paryavasyati । tathā hi – tanmātrebhyo'haṅkāraḥ sūkṣmaḥ, tasmādapi mahān, tato'pi pradhānam । taddhi na līyata ityaliṅgamucyate । tataḥ paraṁ na sūkṣmā prakṛtiḥ samasti । puruṣastu na prakṛtiḥ sarge nimittamātramiti dhyeyam ॥ 45 ॥
saṁprajñātasamāpattīrupasaṁharati –
tā eva sabījaḥ samādhiḥ ॥ 46 ॥
tā eva pūrvoktā eva vivekakhyātyabhāvena bandhabījasattvātsabījaḥ samādhirityarthaḥ ॥ 46 ॥
itthaṁ saṁprajñātamupasaṁhṛtyāsaṁprajñātamupāyapratyayamupasaṁhartuṁ tasya pūrvaraṅgaṁ nirvicārātiśayamāha –
nirvicāravaiśāradye'dhyātmaprasādaḥ ॥ 47 ॥
nirvicārasya pradhānaparyantasūkṣmagocarasya yadvaiśāradyamabhyāsapāṭavena tasya pradhānāntanyagbhāvāccitiśakterudvegaḥ, tasminsatyadhyātmanaścitiśakteḥ prasādaḥ khyātirjāyate ॥ 47 ॥
tataḥ kim ? –
ṛtaṁbharā tatra prajñā ॥ 48 ॥
tatra puruṣakhyātau satyām ṛtam satyamātmānaṁ bibharti prakāśayatīti ṛtambharā prajñā dharmameghaḥ samādhirjāyata ityarthaḥ ॥ 48 ॥
ṛtambharatvopapattimāha –
śrutānumānaprajñābhyāmanyaviṣayā viśeṣārthatvāt ॥ 49 ॥
sūkṣmavyavahitaviprakṛṣṭavastuṣu yogipratyakṣaṁ nirvartate । āgamānumānābhyāṁ tāni vastūni jñāyante । te ca śrutānumānajanye prajñe sāmānyameva gocarayataḥ । idaṁ tu yogipratyakṣaṁ viśeṣagocaratvādṛtambharamityarthaḥ ॥ 49 ॥
tasyāḥ prajñāyā asamprajñātasamādhau bahiraṅgatvasiddhyarthamupakāritvamāha –
tajjaḥ saṁskāro'nyasaṁskārapratibandhī ॥ 50 ॥
tasyāḥ prajñāyā abhyāsajanyo yaḥ saṁskāraḥ, sa cānyānvyutthānasaṁskārānpratibadhnāti bādhata iti tatpratibandhītyarthaḥ ॥ 50 ॥
itthamasaṁprajñātasamādherbahiraṅgasādhanamabhidhāya nirodhaprayatnasyāntaraṅgasādhanatāṁ sūcayannirbīja-mupasaṁharati –
tasyāpi nirodhe sarvanirodhānnirbījaḥ samādhiḥ ॥ 51 ॥
paravairāgyasahakṛtavirāmapratyayena prajñāsaṁskārasyāpi nirodhe satyutpatsyamānaprajñāsaṁskārasya sarvasyāpi nirodhādaśeṣabandhanivṛtternirbījaḥ samādhirlabhyate । tasminsamādhau labdhe sati punarvyutthātumaśaktaṁ saccittaṁ naśyati । tataḥ kūṭasthanityānantā śuddhā citiśaktiḥ sve mahimni nirantaraṁ nirvighnamavatiṣṭhata ityatiśobhanam ॥ 51 ॥
iti śrīmatpatañjalipraṇīte yogaśāstre yogasudhākarābhidhāyāṁ vṛttau
