prācīnādeva kālāt narā ādhyātmikādhibhautikādhidaivikābhidhānaistribhirduḥkhairmuhurmuhuḥ pīḍyamānā duḥkhanivṛttaye kṛtaprayatnā api kleśānniḥśeṣaṁ nirasitumakṣamā eva bhavanti । nisargādeva karuṇārdrahṛdayāḥ prāktanā munivarā bhavanimagnaṁ janamuddidhīrṣavaḥ kāle kāle pradeśe pradeśe ca duḥkhanirasanopāyānadhijagmuḥ । tattvajñānānadhigama eva duḥkhanidānam । tatvajñānaprāptireva duḥkhanirasanopāya iti copalebhire । bhinnakāladeśeṣūpalabdhamapi tatvaviṣayāṇāmanekatvāt kayācana vidhayā pañcadhā saptadhā vā vibhakta āsīdeṣa upāyaḥ । pratibhāgaṁ carcitā viṣayāḥ sūtrarūpeṇa nibaddhā darśanamiti vyapadeśaṁ bhejire ।
darśanānyetānyāstikanāstikabhedena dvidhā vibhaktāni । pāṇinisūtreṇa (4-4-60)
“asti nāsti diṣṭaṁ matiḥ”
ityanenāsya vibhāgasya pramāṇaṁ pradarśitaṁ bhavati । etatsūtravyākhyātrā bhaṭṭojidīkṣitena—
tadasyetyeva । asti paraloka ityevaṁ matiryasya sa āstikaḥ । nāstīti matiryasya sa nāstikaḥ । diṣṭamiti matiryasya sa daiṣṭika iti padānāmeṣāṁ vivaraṇaṁ kṛtam । etasmin vivaraṇe'bhyupagate, āstikatvenābhitā mīmāṁsakāḥ paralokānabhyupagantāro nāstikavyapadeśabhājo bhaveyuḥ । etatparihārāya āstikanāstikaśabdau vedaprāmāṇyābhyupagantṛtvānabhyupagantṛtvamūlakau dārśanikairnirṇītau । prakriyāmenāmabhyupagabhya cārvākajainbauddhāni darśanāni nāstikāni, nyāyavaiśeṣikasāṁkhyayogapūrvamīmāṁsāvedāntadarśanānyāstikānīti vibhāgo'bhyupagataḥ ।
āstikadarśaneṣu sāṁkhyamapahāya tatvahitopāyassūtrarūpeṇa nibaddhāḥ prācīnakālādeva patañjali gautama kaṇāda jaimini bādarāyaṇaiḥ praṇītāḥ । prācīnairdārśanikairanuddhṛtatvāt kapilakartṛkatvena viditānyapi sāṁkhyasūtrāṇi na pramāṇāpadavīmabhajan ।
sāṁkhyamataṁ cātiprācīnameva । idamprathamatayāsmin eva jñānasya mukhyatvaṁ cetanācetanavibhāgaśca nirūpitau । ātmā jñānamayaścetanapadābhidheyaḥ । bahava ātmānaḥ kartṛtvarahitā akriyāśceti prakṛticetanā satatapariṇāminī kartṛtvopetā bhoktṛtvarahitā, satvarajastamoguṇopeteti cāsmin darśane siddhāntaḥ । guṇapadenābhihitānyapi satvarajastamāṁsi dravyāṇyeva ।
prakṛtermahadākhyā buddhirutpadyate, buddherahaṅkāraḥ tasmāt pañca buddhīndriyāṇi pañca karmendriyāṇi manaḥ, pañcatanmātrā iti ṣoḍaśa utpadyante । tanmātrataḥ pañcabhūtāni caturviṁśatistatvāni parigaṇyante । puruṣeṇātmetyaparavyapadeśena sākaṁ pañcaviṁśatitatvānyabhyupagamyante ।
prakāśacalanācalasvabhāvairyukta satvarajastamobhirupetā prakṛtiḥ । prakṛterutpanneṣvapi mahadādiṣvapi guṇā ete vidyante । guṇeṣu vaiṣamyāt prākṛtavastuṣu vaiṣamyamupalabhyate । ata eva sukhaduḥkhādikaṁ taratamabhāvena puruṣaṁ pīḍayati । yadyapi puruṣo guṇarahito bhavati athāpi buddhāvutpanneṣu vividhabhāveṣu sa ātmana evaite bhāvā ityadhyavasyati sukhaduḥkhādikamanubhavati ca । yadā prakṛtipuruṣayorvailakṣaṇyamupalabhate tadā puruṣo na mamaite bhāvā iti prakṛtikṛtavikriyābhyo dūra evāvatiṣṭhate tadānīmātmanassvarūpaṁ vetti, kaivalyākhyaṁ muktisvarūpaṁ ca bhajate ।
eṣa tatvasaṁgrahaḥ sāṁkhyakārikāyāmīśvarakṛṣṇābhidhānena racitāyāṁ viśadīkṛtaḥ । mahābhārate ca śāntiparvaṇi sāṁkhyamatamanekeṣu prakaraṇeṣu nirūpitam । īśvarapreraṇayā prakṛtiḥ pariṇāmaṁ bhajata iti varṇitam । kapilenedaṁ matamāsuraye proktam, āsureḥ pañcaśikha idamadhijagāma vindhyavāsivārṣagaṇya jaigīṣavya devalaprabhṛtaya idaṁ mataṁ prāvartayāmāsuriti jñāyate । ṣaṣṭitantrākhyo vipulaḥ sāṁkhyagrantho luptaḥ । tatratyaviṣayāstu pāñcarātrāhirbudhnyasaṁhitāyāṁ (12-19-30) parigaṇitāḥ ।
sāṁkhyamatoktaṁ tatvamakhilaṁ yogadarśane'bhyupagatam । īśvaraḥ ṣaḍviṁśaṁ tatvam । buddhayahaṁṅkāramanāṁsi cittamityāntarindriyeṇaikenaiva vyapadiśyante । citte satvaguṇo'dhikatayā rajastamobhyāmapekṣayā bhāsate । ata eva prakāśastatra bhūyān vartate । parāṇyapi prakāśayati । guṇatrayeṇa citaṁ satataṁ pariṇamati । ayaṁ pariṇāmo vṛttiśabdena vyapadiśyate । indriyāṇi bāhyavastūnyapi guṇavaiṣamyopaitāni । ata eva sukhaduḥkhādibhāvāścitte jāyante । pratyātmaṁ prākṛtaśarīrāṇāṁ vibhinnatvāt sukhaduḥkhānyekarūpāṇyeva na jāyante । satvena prakāśamāne citte ātmā jñānamayassvaṁ pratibimbitaṁ paśyati । tatrotpannābhivṛttitabhirātmā eva bādhita ityanubhavati । iyamevāvasthā bandhaḥ । na mameti yadānubhavati sa mukta eva । īdṛśo'nubhavo na sarveṣāṁ sarvadā utpadyate । utpanno'pi vṛttivaśādeṣo'nubhavo naśyatyeva । tatvajñāne utpanne'pi puruṣasya vṛttibhirna bādhā jāyeteti vaktuṁ na śakyate । ato yogadarśane vṛttinirodhaḥ kārya iti siddhāntitam ।
yuja samādhau iti dhātoḥ athavā yujiryoge iti dhātorniṣpanno yogaśabdhaḥ । samādhessādhanatvena yamaniyamāsanaprāṇāyāmapratyāhāradhāraṇādhyānasamādhayoṣṭāvaṅgāni (yoga. sū 2-29) ityatrāṣṭāvaṅgāni parigaṇitāni । dhyātuḥ prepsitaṁ yadvartate tadeva dhyeyaṁ bhavitumarhati । yamādipratyāhāraparyantānāmaṅgānāṁ dhyeyatvena viṣayo nāsti । paraṁ tu dhāraṇāditrayāṇāmetadaṅgapañcakamavaśyamapekṣyate । ata eva jainairbauddhaiścāṅgapañcakamādriyate ।
yogaścaturvidho mantralayahaṭharājeti nāmabhiḥ prasiddhaḥ । dvādaśākṣarān mantrayogino dhyāyanti । kāryaṁ kāraṇe yathā līnaṁ bhavati tathā ye yogaṁ kurvanti te layayogina ucyante । prāyo yogo'yaṁ śaivamate prasiddhaḥ । yamādyaṅgānuṣṭhānāya śarīraśca manasaśca dārḍhyamapekṣyate etadarthaṁ haṭhayogo'nuṣṭheyaḥ । yogaścāyaṁ rājayogānuṣṭhānāya kalpate । pūrvamevānuṣṭhitoyaṁ yogaḥ patañjalinā pracāratāṁ nītaḥ ।
rājādantādiṣu param (aṣṭādhyāyī 2-2-31) iti sūtraṁ rājayogaśabdaṁ pramāṇayati । dantānāṁ rājā rājadantaḥ । pūrvapadatvena prayojyo'yaṁ dandaśabda uttarapadaṁ bhavati । tathā rājayogapadaṁ prāmāṇikaṁ bhavati । svātmārāmayogīndreṇa praṇītāyāṁ haṭhayogapradīpikāyāṁ naraharikṛte bodhasāre ca vibhāgo'yaṁ nirūpito bhavati ।
hiraṇyagarbheṇāyaṁ yogaḥ praprathamaṁ pravartitaḥ । viṣṇupurāṇabhāgavatabhagavadgītāhirbudhnyasaṁhitā- sanatkumārasaṁhitādiṣu yogo varṇitaḥ । paścādeva patañjalinā grantharūpeṇa racitaḥ ।
yogasūtre 195 sūtrāṇi santi । samādhināmni prathame pāde 51 sūtrāṇi, sādhanākhye dvitīye 55, vibhūtyabhidhāne tṛtīye 55, kaivalyanāmni ca turīye 34 ? sūtrāṇi santi ।
caturthe pāde sūtrāṇāmitarapādasthebhyo'lpasaṁkhyāvatvāt tṛtīyapādānte keṣucitkośeṣu granthasamāptidyotanāyetiśabdasya prayujyamānatvācca patañjaliścaturthapādaṁ na praṇināyeti kecinmanyante । granthe kasmiṁścidbhāge sūtrāṇāṁ ślokānāṁ vā saṁkhyā tadbhābhāgakartṛtvasādhanāya na niyamayati, api tu tadbhāgagataviṣayā eva gaṇanāmarhanti । katipayakośeṣu kutracit prayuktaḥ itiśabdaḥ tadgranthasamāptiṁ sūcayituṁ nālam । turīye pāde pratipādyamānā viṣayāḥ katipaya eva । ata eva tatra sūtrāṇi pādatrayāpekṣayā nyūnāni bhavanti । samagrāṁ sūtrāṇāṁ patañjalireva kartā iti siddham ।
śabdānāmanuśāsanaṁ vidadhatā pātañjale kurvatā
vṛttiṁ rājamṛgāṅkasaṁjñakamapi vyātatvatā vaidhake ।
vākcetovapuṣāṁ malaḥ phaṇibhṛtāṁ bhartreva yenoddhṛta-
stasya śrīraṇaraṅgamallanṛpatervāco jayantyujvalāḥ ॥
bhojakṛtayogasūtravṛttau upoddhāte pañcamaḥ ślokaḥ ।
etasmācchlokāt patañjalirmahābhāṣyaṁ carakasaṁhitāṁ yogasūtrāṇi ca prāṇaiṣīdityavagabhyate । vibhinnaviṣayāṇāṁ granthānāṁ trayāṇāmeṣāṁ patañjaleḥ kartṛtvābhyupagamo vimarśakebhyo na rocate ekasminnapi granthe itarebhyaḥ svābhiprāyasya prāmāṇyasthāpanārthaṁ saṁvādārthaṁ vā vacanaṁ patañjalinā nopāttam । nāpītarayorgranthayornāmagrahaṇamiti kāraṇamapi svapakṣasya pradarśayanti । eṣa pakṣo hātuṁ yujyate, yataḥ cakrapāṇinā svena racitāyāṁ carakasaṁhitāvyākhyāyāṁ nāgeśabhaṭṭena laghumañjūṣāyāṁ ca patañjaleraparanāmadheyena śeṣaśabdenaitābhyāṁ vākyānyuddhṛtāni santi । vibhinnaviṣayatvena granthāntarasya nāmanirdeśābhāvena ca granthānām ekenaiva kartṛtvābhyupagamo na doṣāya iti mantavyam । patañjalergranthatrayasya kartṛtvābhyupagame na kiṁcidapyasaṅgatam ।
atha yogānuśāsanam । (yo. sū. 1.1) iti prathamasūtrapraṇayanenaiva yogasyānuśāsanaṁ kriyata iti patañjalinā āvedyate । siddhasyaiva yogasya śāsanaṁ kriyate । ata eva pūrvapakṣasiddhāntayorna padamatra dattam ।
etena yogaḥ pratyuktaḥ । (brahmasūtram 2-1-3) iti sūtreṇa yogadarśanaṁ bādarāyaṇena khaṇḍitam । avirodhādhyāye brahmetarat kāraṇamiti vivadamānānāṁ darśanāni khaṇḍitāni । hiraṇyagarbho na brahma, atastena pravartitaṁ darśanaṁ na pramāṇamiti bādarāyaṇasyāśayaḥ ।
yogasūtrāṇāṁ prathamo bhāṣyakartā vyāsaḥ । ko'yaṁ vyāsaḥ? kimayaṁ vedavyāsaḥ? utaitannāmabhāg anya iti saṁśītinirasanāya pramāṇaṁ kiṁcidapi nopalabhyate ।
yogasūtrabhāṣye yoga eva samādhirityuktam । viśokā vā jyotiṣmatī (yo.sū. 1-36) itīdaṁ sūtraṁ viśokā jyotiṣmatīti dvidhā vibhajyobhe apyupāyabhūte iti nirūpitam ।
smṛtipariśuddhau svarūpaśūnye vārthamātranirbhāsā nirvitarkā (yo. sū. 1-43) ityasya vyākhyānāvasare prācīnājñātakartṛkaśśloka eka udāhṛtaḥ ।
vyāsakṛtasya bhāṣyasya bhagavacchaṅkarapādaiḥ praṇītaṁ vivaraṇaṁ, vācaspatimiśrakṛtā tatvavaiśāradī, vijñānabhikṣukṛtaṁ yogavārttikaṁ ceti vyākhyānatrayamupalabhyate । śaṅkarabhagavatpādairvivaraṇākhyaṁ vyākhyānaṁ kṛtamityatra dṛḍhaṁ pramāṇaṁ nopalabhyate । yadi bhagavatpādīyamidaṁ vivaraṇamabhaviṣyat tarhi śaṅkarabhagavatpādakṛtabrahmasūtrabhāṣyasya bhāmatīnāmnīṁ vyākhyāṁ kṛtavanto vācaspatimiśrā vivaraṇamavigaṇayya vyāsakṛtabhāṣyaṁ nāvyākhyāsyat । kiṁ ca śaṅkarācāryāṇāṁ vyākhyānādasmāt saṁvādāyāpi vacanaṁ kiṁcidapi vācaspatimiśrā nopādadire । na ko'pi viśeṣāṁśo vivaraṇe asminnupalabhyate ।
tattvavaiśāradyāṁ ca
īśvarapraṇidhānādvā (yo. sū. 1-23) itīdaṁ sūtraṁ vivṛṇvanto miśrā manovākkāyairupāsanaṁ praṇidhānapadenābhihitamiti vadanti ।
tatpratiṣedhārthamekatattvābhyāsaḥ (yo. sū. 1-32) ityatra ekatattvapadamīśvaramabhidadhātīti pradarśayanti । vijñānabhikṣukṛte yogavārttike kecana viśeṣāṁśā upalabhyante ।
yogaścittavṛttinirodhaḥ ityatra laya eva nirodhapadenābhihita ityuktam ।
tasya vācakaḥ praṇavaḥ (yo. sū. 1-27) ityasya sūtrasya
vyākhyānāvasare liṅgapurāṇātsārdhāṣṭādaśabhiḥ ślokairasya sūtrārtho nirdhāritaḥ ।
tatpratiṣedhārthamekatattvābhyāsaḥ (yo. sū. 1-32) ityatraikapadena sthūla evārtho'bhidhīyate, na tvīśvaraḥ । itarathā sūtrakāreṇeśvarapadameva prayuktaṁ syāt । vācaspatimiśrāṇāṁ matamatrakhaṇḍitamiva bhāti ।
kṣīṇāvṛtterabhijātasyeva maṇergrahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyeṣu tatsthatadañjanatāsamāpattiḥ (yo. sa. 1-41) iti sūtre prayuktaṁ samāpattipadaṁ tāntrikamityuktam । prathamapāde 2, 7, 10, 19 & 24, sūtrāṇi kaiścidadvaitapapharāṇi varṇitāni atra khaṇḍitāni ।
yogasūtrāṇāmanyā vyākhyāḥ ḥ-
1. bhojarājakṛtā vṛttī rājamārtāṇḍābhidhā । īśvarapraṇidhānaṁ kriyamāṇāḥ kriyāḥ sarvā īśvare samarpaṇīyā iti bhāvaṁ vyañjayatītyuktam । sarveṣāṁ gururityatra gurupadasya sarveṣāmupadeṣṭetyarthaḥ । maitrīkaruṇetyatra (yo. sū. 1-33) gaṇitaśāstrācchloka eka udāhṛtaḥ ।
2. vijñānabhikṣorantevāsinā bhāvāgaṇeśena praṇītā pātañjalavattiḥ । asmin mate khyātivādo'nyathākhyātirūpaḥ । mukhyaṁ vairāgyaṁ yatamānasaṁjñā, ekendriyasaṁjñā, vaśīkārasaṁjñeti caturdhā
bhidyata ityuktam । pūrveṣāmapi gururityatra (yo. sū. 1–26) gurupadaṁ jñānacakṣuṣaḥ pradātāramabhidadhatsarveṣāṁ bhagavato'ntaryāmitayā vidyamānatvādidaṁ yujyata ityuktam । vītarāgaviṣayaṁ vā cittam (yo. sū. 1-37) ityatra sanandasanakādayo vītarāgaśabdenābhipretā ityucyate ।
yathābhimatadhyānādvā (yo. sū. 1-39) ityatra harerharasya vā mūrtiryathābhimatapadena nirdiṣṭā ityuktam ।
3. vaiyākaraṇamūrdhanyamaṇinā nāgeśena praṇītā vṛttiḥ । sūkṣmaviṣayatvaṁ cāliṅgaparyavasānam (yo. sū. 1-45)
ityatreśvarasya jagato nimittakāraṇamevoktam । 26, 50 sūtre advaitamatarītyā vyākhyāte ।
4. rāmānandasarasvatībhī racitā vyākhyā maṇiprabhā । prathamakalpitamadhubhūmikaprajñājyotiratikrāntabhāvanīyā iti yoginaścaturvidhā ityuktam । satvodrikta īśvare itarebhyo jñānapradatvaṁ saṁbhāvyata iti nirūpitam ।
5. anantadevena praṇītā candrikābhidhānā vyākhyā nitarāṁ saṁgraharūpā ।
6. sadāśivabrahmendrasarasvatībhiḥ praṇītā yogacandrikā vyākhyā । atra bahūni sūtrāṇyadvaitaparatayā vyākhyātāni ṛtambharā prajñā dharmamedhasamādhimabhidhatte ityuktam ।
7. kṛṣṇavallabhena kṛtā vṛttiḥ । vedetihāsapurāṇebhyo vākyānyuddhṛtya svavyākhyāṁ pramāṇīkaroti । yogasiddhaye īśvarānugrahaḥ sarvathāpekṣyata ityuktam । īśvaro vāsudeva eva ।
yogatattvapratipādakagrantheṣu
1. nāthādhorānandanirmitā yogakarṇikā mukhyā । aṣṭādaśasvadhyāyeṣu āsanāṅgasahitāni yogatattvāni spaṣṭaṁ nirūpitāni ।
2. bhagavatā nārāyaṇena bharadvājāyopadiṣṭā yogavidhayo haṁsayoginā yogadīpikākhye granthe vivṛtāḥ । kṛtiriyaṁ śaivamatasya bahūpakaroti ।
3. yogabhāgamātrapratipādikā vāsiṣṭhasaṁhitā yogasūtraviṣayān haṭhayogāṁśca varṇayati ।
4. vijñānabhikṣuṇā kṛto yogasārasaṁgraho nāma grantho yogatatsādhanasiddhikaivalyāni samyaṅ nirūpayati ।
5. śivānandasarasvatībhī racito yogacintāmaṇināmako granthaḥ । pratyāhāradhāraṇāhaṭhayogasiddhāntarahasyāni viśadamatra nirūpitāni bhavanti ।
yogaviṣayānadhikṛtya kecana granthā racitā upalabhyante ।
1. parameśvarayogīndrakṛtaṁ yogarahasyam । śaivamatamavalambya racitametat ।
2. yogarahasyābhidhāno'nyo grantho hastigirimāhātmye'ntargataḥ । vaiṣṇavasaṁpradāyamanurudhya praṇīto'yaṁ granthaḥ ।
3. paramahaṁsairnārāyaṇatīrthaiḥ aṣṭāṅgayoganirūpaṇam , aṣṭāṅgayogavivaraṇam, yogasūtravṛttiśca praṇītāni ।
atra mudritā yogavallīnāmnī yogasūtravyākhyā madrapurīmalaṅkarvāṇaistirumalaikṛṣṇamācāryai racitā yogasūtravṛttirūpā । vyākaraṇamīmāṁsāśāstrayoḥ pariṇataprajñā ete yogaśāstre tatprayoge cānitarasādharaṇaṁ kauśalaṁ vahanti । pratyahaṁ nityakarmānuṣṭhānaṁ yogasaṁpradāyasiddhābhiḥ vidhābhiḥ ācaranta ete yadasya na kiṁcidapi padamadadānāḥ chātrānapi sanmārge pravartayanto vilasanti ।
ācinoti ca śāstrārthamācāre sthāpayatyapi ।
svayamācarate yasmāttasmādācārya ucyate ॥
ityācāryalakṣaṇaṁ nūnametān lakṣyīkṛtya nirmitam । himālayavāsāllabdha yogaprayogatattvā ete madrapuryāṁ yogamandiraṁ nirmāya chātrānabhyastayogān kurvanto yogasūtrāṇāṁ saṁpradāyādavāptaṁ sūkṣmekṣikayā copalabdhaṁ paramaṁ tātparyaṁ parasmā āvedanāya yogavallīnāmakaṁ vyākhyānaṁ praṇītavantaḥ । ata evaiteṣāṁ sūtrāṇāṁ yogivaryairebhiḥ kṛtā vṛttiḥ prāmāṇyapadavīmadhyāsta ityatra na ko'pi saṁśayaḥ ।
āstikadarśanatvenābhimateṣu yogaśāstratatvapratipādakeṣu patañjalipraṇīteṣu yogasūtreṣu svādhyāyānuśraviketi padadvayamupalabhyate । vedavacasā yogaśāstratattvaṁ prāmāṇyaṁ bhajata iti nirūpayituṁ yogavallīkārā bahūni vākyānyudāharanti । chāndogya-taittirīya-muṇḍakopaniṣadbhya etāni vacanānyupāttāni । tathāhi —
ṛtaṁ ca satyaṁ cābhīddhāttapaso'dhyajāyata । iti ।
(ma. nā. u. 5-5)
nirvicāravaiśāradyāmavasthāyāṁ jīvasya svasvarūpajñānaṁ jāyata iti jñāpanāyopāttamidaṁ vacanam ।
ṛtambharā tatra pratijñā । (yo.sū. 1 — 48) ityatra muṇḍakopaniṣanmantreṇopo?balayati ।
praṇavo dhanuḥ śarohyātmā brahma tallakṣyamucyate ।
apramattena veddhavyaṁ śaravattanmayo bhavet ॥ iti ।

nāgojibhaṭṭasadāśivabrahondrasarasvatīprabhṛtayo yogasūtrāṇyadvaitaparatayā vyācakhyuḥ । yogavallīkārā imāni sūtrāṇi viśiṣṭādvaitaparatayā vyācakṣate । kīdṛśī rītiratra yuktā iti vimarśajāle vinipātaṁ varjayitvā kathamete vyācakṣata iti parāmṛśāmaḥ । yogasūtreṣu na kutrāpi jagato mṛṣātvaṁ nirdiṣṭam । satyaṁ jagadityabhyupagamya, brahma saguṇameva, tacca lakṣmīnārāyaṇa eveti nirṇītam । īśa śvaryeti dhātorniṣpanna īśaśabda īśvarīmapyabhidhatte ।
ubhau ekaṁ tattvameva । upaniṣadbhyaḥ purāṇādibhyaścaitatsamarthayituṁ vacanāni yogavallīkāraiḥ pradarśitāni । īśvarapraṇidhānādvā । (yo. sū. 1–23) ityatra vāśabdo vikalpārthakaḥ । cittavṛttinirodhāya ye'śaktāsteṣāṁ kṛte īśvarapraṇidhānaṁ sukaropāya iti patañjalinedaṁ sūtra praṇītamiti vyākhyātāro manyante ।
bhagavannāthamunerāśayaṁ viditvā yogavallīkārā vāśabdasyāvadhāraṇārthakameveti niścinvanti । udāharanti cātra nāmaliṅgānuśāsanātpramāṇam । tadyathā —
syurevaṁ tu punarvaivetyavadhāraṇavācakāḥ (3-4-15) iti vikalpārthakasya vāśabdasyāvadhāraṇārthatvābhyupagamāya yuktiṁ pramāṇaṁ caite vyākhyātāraḥ pradarśayanti । paśvālambhāśvamedhādaya- ssutrakārairvihitā api kṛtayugīnairevānuṣṭhātuṁ kṣamāḥ । tanūyamāne tapasi, mlāyati jñāne, jīryati yajñe dānamevācarituṁ kalau janāḥ prabhavanti । tathā coktaṁ nyāyācāryaiḥ—
vaidikā apyācārā rājasūyāśvamedhādayaḥ samucchidyamānā dṛśyante, yata idānīṁ nānuṣṭhīyante । na caite prāgapi nānuṣṭhitā eva । tadarthasya vedarāśeraprāmāṇyaprasaṅgāt iti ।

āyurārogyabalavīryaśraddhāśamadamagrahaṇadhāraṇādiśaktiḥ aharaharapacīyamānānyevānubhūyante । tathā cittavṛttinirodho'dya kalau kathamanuṣṭhātuṁ śakyate । ata īśvarapraṇidhānameva kāryam । anena vṛttinirodhaṁ vidadhanti sūtrāṇi eva prāmāṇikānīti na mantavyam । yogāṅgānāmaṣṭānāmapīśvarapraṇidhānāyopakārakatvaṁ bhavatyeva । dhyātṛdhyeyadhyānāvayavatrayaṁ yogābhyāse vartate । dhyātā jīvaḥ । dhyeyaṁ vastu paramātmā eva, na tu prākṛtaṁ yatkiṁcidvastu yatastasmin dhyeye'cetanaṁ vastu ghyāyataścittavṛttinirodhaḥ na kadācit setsyati । dhyānaṁ nāmopāsanameva । tadapi jñānarūpameva । jñānamayena jīvena dhyātrā jñānarūpa īśvaro dhyeya iti sāmpratam । yo jīvaḥ “ahaṁ jānāmi” ityanubhavaṁ prāpnoti, tena so'nubhavo jñānamaya evānubhūyeta । anubhavaviṣayajñānamātmani jāyate । jñānamaye ātmani viṣayasya jñānamutpadyate । ata evāhaṁ jānāmīti jīvasyānubhavaḥ । viṣayajñānamātmasvarūpe jñāne dharmatayā bhāsate । ato viṣayajñānaṁ dharmabhūtajñānamityucyate । anena dharmabhūtajñānena dhyānarūpeṇa dhyeyaṁ vastu jīvena jñāyate । viṣayajñāne utpanne kimātmā mama etadviṣayakajñānamutpannamityadhyavasyati ? sarveṣāṁ netyeveti vaktavyaṁ bhavati । yadi na kathaṁ tarhi yogināṁ dhyātṛdhyānadhyeyeti tritayasyānubhavaḥ? ato bhagavannāthamunipraṇītaṁ yogarahasyamādhārīkṛtya ahaṁgrahopāsanametadarthamācaritavyamiti yogavallīkārā abhiprayanti ।
ahamiti padasyātmetyarthaḥ । graho jñānam । ahaṁgrahopāsanaṁ nāmāhamiti jñānavatā īśvara upāya ityarthaṁ nirdiśati ।
atra tvayamākṣepa udbhavet । ahamityasya padasyāhaṅkāro'pyartho vidyate । tathācāhaṁgrahopāsanamāhaṅkārikajñānopāsanameva syāt । ahaṅkārasya prākṛtasyopāsanena punaḥ saṁsṛtireva syāt ।
kuto muktivārteti ।
atretthaṁ samādhīyate । gaurgacchatītyādau gamanaṁ gopiṇḍaniṣṭham । taccācetane krīḍārthaṁ nirmite gopiṇḍe nopalabhyate । jīvatyeva gopiṇḍe tadṛśyate । gaurgacchatītyasya gopiṇḍasyāntarvidyamānasya jīvasya prayatnādeva gopiṇḍaṁ gacchatīti vyavaharo'pi saṁgacchate । ato gopadaṁ gopiṇḍāntarvidyamānamātmānaṁ mukhyayā vṛttyābhidhatta ityaṅgīkāryam । tathā cāha kaṇādo muniḥ —
devadatto gacchati yajñadatto gacchatītyupacāre pratyayaḥ । iti vaiśeṣikasūtram । (3-2-12) devadattaśarīre, yajñadattaśarīre, goḥśarīre ca prayujyamānā devadattayajñadattagośabdā aupacārikavṛttayaiva śarīrāṇyetānyabhidadhatītyaṅgīkāryam ।
yathā gauriti śabdo gopiṇḍaviśiṣṭātmānamabhidhatte, tathā ātmeti padamapi tasyāntaryāmiṇaṁ paramātmānamabhidhatte । acetanānāṁ cetanānāṁ ca paramātmā evāntaryāmī । cetanācetane śarīrabhūte paramātmanaḥ ato gośabdo gopiṇḍaviśiṣṭasya jīvasyāntaryāmiṇaḥ paramātmano vācakaḥ । tathā copaniṣadvākyam—
yaḥ tṛthivyāṁ tiṣṭhan tṛthivyā antaraḥ yaṁ tṛthivī na veda yasya pṛthivī śarīraṁ yaḥ tṛthivīmantaro yamayati eṣa te'ntaryāmyamṛtaḥ । bṛhadāraṇyakopaniṣat 3–7–3
ya ātmani tiṣṭhan ātmano'ntaraḥ yamātmā na veda yasyātmā śarīraṁ ya ātmānamantaro yamayati eṣa te'ntayamyamṛtaḥ । bṛ. ā. u. 3-7-22.
evamahaṁśabdaśśarīraviśiṣṭaparamātmano vācakaḥ । ahaṁgrahopāsanaṁ ca svaśarīrāntaryāmītyasya jñānasyopāsanamityarthaḥ । pratardanavidyāyāṁ māmupāssveti vacanamasyopāsanaṁ pramāṇayati । ahaṁgrahetyasya maccharīraviśiṣṭaparamātmajñānamityarthaḥ ।
etādṛśopāsanārthaṁ pratimāyāḥ pūjanamāvaśyakam । lohena mṛdā vā viṣṇoḥ surūpāṁ pratimāṁ nirmāya pāñcarātravidhānena tasyāḥ prāṇapratiṣṭhā kartavyā । tasyāḥ purata upaviśya trāṭakākhyatāntrikavidhayā tāmīkṣeta । tāmeva pratimāṁ pūjayet । anantaraṁ samādhyarthaṁ prayateta ।
viṣṇuparayogakramaṁ vivṛṇvanto bhagavannāthamunayo yogarahasyaṁ nāma granthaṁ praṇinyuḥ । sa grantho'tyantaṁ luptaḥ । nāthamuneḥ śiṣyastaṁ granthaṁ yogakramaṁ cādhijagāma । kurukeśvaranāmna etacchiṣyādyāmunamunayaḥ kṛtaprayatnā api granthamimaṁ na gṛhītavantaḥ । paraṁ tu guruparamparātaḥ kimayaṁ grantho nādhigataḥ, uta tatra pratipāditaṁ yogarahasyaṁ veti niścetuṁ na śakyate । luptādasmād granthāt kathaṁ yogavallīkārā vacanānyudāhartuṁ prabhavanti? vādacikitsādināmnā tatrasthaprakaraṇāni kathamete jānantīti mahān saṁśayo vartate ।
asya samādhiścaivaṁ bhavitumarhati । yogavallīkārā yogaśāstre prayoge ca kuśalāḥ, siddhimantaśca । āptānāmaiṣāṁ vacāṁsi pramāṇatayā grāhyāṇyeva ।
pratyayasya paracittajñānam (yo.sū.3–19) iti sūtreṇa patañjaliryogī sattvodriktaḥ pareṣāṁ citte vidyamānānāṁ
pratyayānāṁ jñānaṁ labhata iti vakti । pareṣāṁ cittāni yadānena samāhitāni kriyante tadā tatra vidyamānānāṁ jñānamapyupalabhyate ।
pariṇāmatrayasaṁyamāt atītānāgatajñānam । (yo. sū. 3-16) iti sūtre dharmalakṣaṇāvasthātrayapariṇāmān samādhāyātītakālīnānāgatakālīnayorvastunoḥ pratyayayorvā jñānaṁ labhata ityuktam । rajastamobhāgau pratibadhya cittatasya sattvabhāgo yadā samādhīyate, tadā bhūtakālabhaviṣyatkālābhyāṁ saṁbaddhānāṁ viṣayāṇāṁ jñānaṁ yogī prāpsyatīti sūtrasyārthaḥ ।
bhagavannāthamunibhirapyevameva śaṭhakopasūreḥ kāladharmaṁ gatasyāpi citte niṣṭhitāścatuḥsahasragāthāḥ prāpetyabhyūhituṁ śakyate । yogavallīkārā api bhagavannāthamunibhya evameva yogarahasyamadhigatavanta ityatrākṣepaṇaṁ kartuṁ na yujyate । bhagavannāthamunivaṁśajānāṁ yogavallīkārāṇāmidaṁ saṁbhāvyata ityapyaṅgīkāryam ।
yata ete vyākhyātāro bhagavannāthamuneścittagatapratyayān jānanti, ata evaitaiḥ prakaraṇeṣu yogarahasyagatavākyānāmuddharaṇaṁ kartuṁ śakyate । īśvarapraṇidhānasūtre vāśabdārthamavadhāraṇātmakamiti gadadbhiretaiḥ prathamapāde sūtrāṇi dvidhā vibhaktāni । prathamabhāge 1-22 sūtrāṇi santi । uttarabhāge 23–51 sūtrāṇi vartante । prathamapāde cittavṛttinirodho nirūpitaḥ । dvitīyabhāge ca īśvarapraṇidhānaṁ tadāśritya yogābhyāsaśca nirupitaḥ ।
śarīra utpadyamānā rogāḥ
pracchardanavidhāraṇābhyāṁ prāṇasya (yo.sū. 1-34) iti satreṇa niḥśeṣaṁ nivāryanta iti nivedya, prāṇāyāmasyāṅgabhūtaṁ kumbhakaṁ, śītalī, sītkārītyādibhedayuktamiti pradarśayanti vyākhyātāraḥ । yogābhyāsasya śarīrārogyamavaśyamapekṣyate, tadarthaṁ sāttvika āhāra eva svīkāryaḥ । ucchavāsapraśvāsābhyāṁ dehe vidyamānā doṣā apayanti । brahmacaryapātivratye sarvathānupālanīye ।
yathā śārīro rogastathā mānasarogo'pi yogābhyāsenāpanetuṁ śakyata iti prāṇāyāmasyāvaśyācaraṇīyatvaṁ, satatapariṇāmavaccittaṁ punarvikriyāṁ yathā na pratipadyeta tathā cittasya
sthirīkaraṇārthamapekṣyata ityuktam ।
yogavallīkārā na kevalaṁ vyākhyātāraḥ, paraṁ tu mūlagranthasya tātparyabodhane nitarāṁ kuśalāḥ । sūtrāṇāṁ paurvāparyavimarśanaṁ kṛtvā, yadanuktaṁ tadanyato grāhyamiti nyāyena tacchāstrāntarebhya ādāya sūtrārtheṣu saṁgamayya vyākhyānaṁ kurvanti । pūrvaiḥ kṛtavyākhyānāpekṣayā eteṣāṁ vivaraṇamativistṛtamupalabhyate । tathā hi—
bhavapratyo videhaprakṛtilayānām (yo. sū 1-19) ityatra yogavallīkārairavataraṇikā dattā yayā nirodhasamādhessvarūpaṁ sphuṭamāviṣkṛtaṁ bhavati । yogabhāṣyādau yadyatyeṣa prakāśo nopalabhyate, athāpi mandaprajñānāṁ saṁśayanivāraṇārthaṁ yogavallīkāraiḥ kṛtā avataraṇikā āvaśyakīti yogavallīkārāṇāmāśayaḥ ।
śraddhāvīryasmṛtisamādhiprajñāpūrvaka itareṣām— (yo . sū. 1-20) ityatra patañjaleḥ kālānantarameva yogadarśanasya pravṛttiriti keṣāṁcanābhiprāyamākṣipya, nārāyaṇāt sanakasanandanādidvārā yogasaṁpradāyaḥ patañjalinā labdhaḥ, ya enaṁ sūtrarūpeṇa pravartitavāniti yogavallīkārāssamarthayanti । upaniṣadvākyaiścāsya sampradāyasya prācīnatāṁ cātiṣṭhante । etatsūtrasthāni śraddhāvīryasmṛtisamādhiprajñāni padāni samādhāvupakurvantītyāveditam । bhaktajanaprārthanānurodhena bhagavān tebhya īpsitaphalāni dadātīti yogarahasyakārāṇāmayamāśaya iti yogavallīkārā abhiprayanti ।
kleśakarmavipākāśayairaparāmṛṣṭaḥ puruṣaviśeṣa īśvaraḥ (yo. sū. 1.24) ityatreśvarapadaṁ bhagavato nārāyaṇasyaiva vācakamiti, puruṣaviśeṣaḥ puruṣottama eveti, tasya karmaṇi na spṛhā, nāpi karmaphale iti ca sapramāṇaṁ yogavallīkārairnirūpitam । vacanamapyatroktam—
na māṁ karmaṇi limpanti na ca karmaphale spṛhā ॥ bhagavadgītā 4-14.
apahatapātmā satyasaṁkalpaḥ ॥ chāndogyopaniṣat 8.1.5.
uttamaḥ purūṣastvanyaḥ paramātmetyudāhṛtaḥ ।
yo lokatrayamaviśya bibhartyavyaya īkṣvaraḥ ॥ iti ॥ bhagavadgītā 15-17.
vyādhistyānasaṁśayapramādālasyāviratibhrāntidarśanālabdhabhūmikatvānavasthitatvāni cittavikṣepāste antarāyāḥ (yo. sū. 1-30) ityasmin sūtre prayuktānāṁ śabdānāṁ yogavallīkāraiḥ prākaraṇikā arthā evābhihitā bhavanti । tadyathā— saṁśaya īśvaro'sti vā na vetirūpaḥ ālasyaṁ śāstravihitakāle'nanuṣṭhānam । aviratiḥ śāstroktamaryādollaṁghanam । anavasthitatvayatheṣṭācaraṇamaniyatānuṣṭhānaṁ ca ।
asminneva prakaraṇe bhaktisaṁvardhanāya manonairmalyamapekṣyata ityuktvā āhāraniyamena dhamanīnāṁ sandhau, prāṇendriyeṣu ca śaktirutpadyata iti nirūpya mitāśitenaiva bhavitavyamiti nirūpitam । atra pramāṇaṁ ca
nātyaśnatastu yogo'sti na caikāntamanaśnataḥ ॥
bhagavadgītā 6.16.
iti yogarahasyoktametadvivaraṇamiti yogavallīkārāḥ ।
smṛtipariśuddhau svarūpaśūnyevārthamātranirbhāsā nirvitarkā (yo. sū. 1-43). etayaiva savicārā nivicārā ca sūkṣma viṣayā vyākhyātā । (yo. sū. 1-44) iti sūtradvayaṁ saṁyojya bhagavatsvarūpaṁ sūkṣmameva prapannānāṁ prārthanānurūpaṁ svīkṛtya tebhyaḥ pradarśya phalāni dadāti । etadrūpaṁ na prākṛtaṁ, svaprakāśaṁ cetyuktvā bhagavadanugrahaṁ teṣāmevānukampārthamahamajñānajaṁ tamaḥ ।
nāśayāmyātmabhāvastho jñānadīpena bhāsvatā iti । (bhagavadgītā 10-11) vākyena varṇitam ।
tatpratiṣedhārtharmakatatvābhyāsaḥ (yo. sū. 1-32) ityatraikapadamanitarasādhāraṇaṁ viśeṣaṇaṁ vyanakti । etadviśeṣaṇaṁ tatvabhūtaṁ nārāyaṇameva viśinaṣṭi aparathā ekapadaṁ pariṇāmi karmādhīnaṁ ca vastveva nirdiśet yasyābhyāsena cittanirodho na kathaṁcit setsyatītyuktam ।
vītarāgaviṣayaṁ vā cittam । (yo. sū. 1-37) ityatra vītarāgapadasyetthaṁ vivaraṇaṁ kriyate yogavallīkāraiḥ yātrākāleṣu tatra tatra vītarāgaiḥ samāgamaṁ prāpya yātrikāḥ svasthānaṁ nivṛtya tān smareyuḥ । tadā teṣāṁ svarūpaṁ cintyate । tena teṣāṁ cittaṁ vītarāgaṁ bhavati । vyākhyāntareṣu sanakādīnāṁ 'cittamatrābhimatamityuktam । ' tanna samīcīnaṁ bhāti; yatastādṛśāṁ cittaṁ sulabhena grahītuṁ na śakyate । kutastasya smaraṇam? sarvaḥ sagandheṣu viśvasitīti nyāyād vītarāgaiḥ prathamaṁ samāgamaḥ prāpyaḥ ॥ tadanantarameva smaraṇasyāvakāśa iti bodhyam ।
yogavallīkāraiḥ pātañjaladarśanasya prameyacintā kriyate । tatreśvaraṁ niyantāramanugrahītāraṁ cābhyupagamya tasya dhyānārthaṁ mūrtimekāṁ sthāpayitvā, tasyāḥ purata āsane upaviśya dhyānaṁ kartavyamityupadiśanti yogavallīkārāḥ । pātañjaladarśane īśvaro nopādānakāraṇam ।
mṛdumadhyādhimātratvāttato'pi viśeṣaḥ (yo. sū. 1-22) itīdaṁ sūtraṁ spaṣṭārthakatvānna vivṛtam । vṛttiśceyaṁ yogasūtratātparyaṁ jijñāsamānebhyo nitarāmupakarotīti vyākhyāmimāṁ sakṛtpaṭhanenaiva vyaktaṁ bhaviṣyati ।
nāthamuniḥ
nāthena muninā tena bhaveyaṁ nāthavānaham ।
yasya naigamikaṁ tattvaṁ hastāmalakatāṁ gatam ॥
yatirājasaptatiḥ ślokaḥ 5.
yo vaidikaṁ tattvaṁ haste āmalakamiva sākṣātkṛtavān tena nāthamuninā ahaṁ nāthavān bhaveyamityarthaḥ ।
śaṭhamarṣaṇagotrodbhava īśvaramuniḥ śrīśrīnivāsaṁ sevamāno veṅkaṭagirau svajīvitaṁ nayannāsīt । itarakṣetrāṇi gantukāmassaḥ katipayairvidvadbhiranuyāto veṅkaṭagiritaḥ prasthāya uttarāpathe dakṣiṇadeśe ca sthitāni kṣetrāṇi gatvā tatrasthān bhagavatassiṣeve । antataścidambarasya nātidūre vidyamānaṁ kāṭṭmannārkovilabhidhaṁ kṣetrametya tatra bhagavantaṁ sevamānaḥ kañcitkālamuvāsa ।
tatra sthitasya tasya īsavīya 823 tame varṣe kumāra eko'jani । raṅganātheti nāmnā kṛtassa kumāraḥ pitṛta eva śāstraṁ sarvaṁ samadhijagāma । pitrā ca yogānuṣṭhāne kāritaparicayaḥ samādhimācaran bhagavati dṛḍhabhakto'bhūt । anena sa raṅganāthamuniriti nāmnā kṛtaḥ । saṅgraheṇa nāthamunirityeva prathāmavāpa ।
kadācit kurukeśvarakṣetrādāgatāḥ katipaye śrīvaiṣṇavāḥ kāṭṭumannārālaye aparyāptāmṛteti drāviḍadaśakaṁ madhuraṁ jaguḥ । tadākarṇanena paravaśo bhūtvā nāthamunistaddaśakamadhikṛtya tān yātrikān varṇayitumanvayukta । “kumbhaghoṇasthale gāthāgāyakebhyastaddaśakaṁ gṛhītam । tataḥ paraṁ vayaṁ na kiñcidapi jānīma” ityuttaraṁ dattavatsu teṣu yātrikeṣu, nāthamuniḥ kumbhaghoṇametya tatra sthitān gāyakānetaddaśakamadhikṛtya papraccha । tairapi tadviṣayajñānābhāve āvedite kurukāpurīṁ nāthamunirayāsīt । parāṅkuśadāsanāmnastadvāstavyāt “śaṭhakopena sahastragāthā racitāḥ, aparyāptāmṛteti daśakaṁ tadantargatameva, parantu sahasragāthārūpo grantho lupta eve”ti viveda । nāthamunaye tā gāthā avāptumupāyamekañca nivedayāmāsa “śaṭhakopasyāntevāsī madhurakaviriti dvijavarya
eka āsīt । tena śaṭhakopamāhātmyāvedakaṁ “kaṇṇinun śiruttāmbu”nāmakaṁ drāviḍyāṁ daśakamekaṁ racitam । tattumatto'vāpya dvādaśasahasrākṛtvastadbhavadbhirāvartitavyam । tadanu phalabhāk bhavān bhaviṣyatī”ti sa vyājahāra । nāthamunirapi taddaśakaṁ tasmādadhigatya tathaivāvartayāmāsa । tadātve samādhisthasya tasya nāthamuneḥ purataśśaṭhakopa āvirabhūt । tasyepsitañcānuyuyoja । nāthamuniḥ prahvo bhūtvā sahastragāthāstaṁ yayāce । so'pi na kevalaṁ sahastragāthāssvanirmitāḥ, anyeṣāṁ gāthānāṁ sahasratrayaṁ, mantrān, brahmasūtrāṇi vyākhyāsahitāni ca tasmā upādikṣat tirobabhūva ca । śaṭhopādadhigatametatsarvaṁ manasi kurvan tatkṣetrasthaṁ bhagavantaṁ sevamāno nāthamuniḥ kañcitkālamatyavāhayat ।
anitarasulabhena vismayāvahenānena vṛttāntena tatra sthitāssanto nāthamuniṁ svakṛtapuṇyaphalamamaṁsata । vṛttāntamekaṁ ca tasmai nivedayāmāsuḥ । “kaliyanāmako (tirumaṅgaiyālvār) divyasūriḥ kurūkāpuryāṁ sthitāṁ śaṭhakopapratimāṁ śrīraṅgapurīṁ nītvā tatra viṁśatiṁ dināni dhanurmāse'dhyayanotsavamakārayatm । pratisaṁvatsaramevaṁ nirvartito'yamutsavaḥ kaliye kāladharma gate upararāma” iti । mahanīyaṁ maha ācaritavyamiti niśritadhīrnāthamuniḥ śaṭhakopamūrtiṁ śrīraṅgaṁ prāpayyādhyayanotsavaṁ nirvartayāmāsa । kumbhaghoṇe ca śrīmadaparyāptāmṛtālaye śaṭhakopaberaṁ pratiṣṭhāpyādhyayanotsavaṁ tatrākārṣīt । tataḥ kāṭṭumannārkovilsthalaṁ pratinivṛttaḥ tatrasthaṁ devaṁ sevamānastasthau ।
tatra ca kṛṣṇamācāryanāmānaṁ (melaiyahattālvān) bhāgineyaṁ, varadācāryābhidhānaṁ (kīlaiyahattālvān) cānyaṁ bhagineyaṁ, itaran śiṣyāṁścādhītagāthācatuṣṭayān cakāra । chātreṣu teṣu kecana tannideśena raṅgapurīmetya bhagavantaṁ raṅgapatimetābhirgāthāmiḥ toṣayantastaṁ sevamānāstatraiva tasthuḥ, itare tu gurossakāśa eva sthitāḥ ।
evaṁ kāle gacchati, gaṅgakoṇḍacolapuramiti prasiddhaṁ puraṁ śāsataścolarājasya sabhāṁ gaṇikādvayamāgatya prātisvikaṁ gānacāturyaṁ pradarśayāmāsatuḥ । tayorekā divyagāne itarā aihalaukkigāne prāvīṇyamupagatavatyau । rājā tu mānuṣagānameva ślāghamānasta tropadarśitakauśalāṁ gaṇikāṁ bhūribhirdravyābharaṇādibhissammānayāmāsa । anena kiñcidiva bhagnāśāpi divyagānavicakṣaṇāparā gaṇikā kṣetrāt kṣetraṁ tatrasthālaye pratiṣṭhitaṁ bhagavantaṁ svagānenāhlādayantī antataḥ kāṭṭumannārkṣetramāsasāda । tatra ca bhagavantaṁ svadivyagānena stuvatīṁ tāṁ vilokya, nāthamunistāṁ divyagānamanekavidhaṁ kartuṁ niyojayāmāsa । cittāpahāri tadgānaṁ niśamya nāthamunistasyai bahumānāni dāpayāmāsa । sā ca colanṛpasamīpaṁ gatvā gānavidyāyāṁ nāthamuneḥ prāvīṇyamāvedayat । rājñā sapraśrayaṁ prārthito nāthamunī rājasabhāṁ prāpya, devagānasya manuṣyagānāt viśeṣaṁ pradarśayamāsa । divyagānavicakṣaṇāṁ ca gaṇikāṁ sabhāyāṁ sthite stambhe'kasmin tālamekamutpādya gātavyamiti dideśa । tathaiva gaṇikayā kṛte, śrotṛcittavismayāvaho madhuraśśabdasandoho'jani । stambhaśca pralīno babhūva । nāthena punarapi tattālayuktagānāya niyuktā gaṇikā jagau stambhaśra yathāpūrvamavasthānaṁ prāpa । tālānāṁ śatacatuṣṭayaṁ nirmāya tāṁ gaṇikāṁ yadā nātho nirdiṣṭavān, tadā sāpi tathaiva yugapadevācarat । nitāntaṁ vismayāviṣṭī rājā yāvat nāthaṁ yathārhaṁ saṁbhājayitumayatiṣṭa tāvannāthastāṁ saparyāmagṛhītvaiva svasthānaṁ nyavartata ।
puṇḍarīkākṣādayo'ṣṭau śiṣyā nāthamunerabhūvan । nāthamuninā nyātattvayogarahasyākhyau granthau viracitau । gautamajaiminiprabhṛtibhī ṛṣibhirvākyapramāṇatattvasvarūpaṁ vivecitam । tairnirūpitaṁ sarvaṁ vedāntibhirnābhyupagamyate । kvacit kvacit vedeṣu viśiṣyopaniṣatsu nirdiṣṭavastusvarūpasya vākyapramāṇaśāstreṣu virodha evopalabdhaḥ । vaidikaṁ pāramārthikaṁ svarūpaṁ pradarśayitukāmo nāthamuniḥ nyāyatattvābhidhānaṁ granthaṁ praṇītavān । sa tu lupta eva । śrīmadvedāntadeśikagrantheṣu tatrasthavākyānyudāhṛtāni । yogarahasyagranthastu lupta eva । svaśiṣyāya kurūkādhipāya nāthamuniryogarahasyamapāviśat । tadadhigamārthaṁ kṛtaprayatno'pi yāmunāryaḥ taṁ granthaṁ athavā
tatpratipāditayogavidhiṁ ca nādhijagāma ।
nāthamuneḥ sūnorīśvaramuneḥ kumāra eka īsavīya 916 varṣe'jani । yāmuneti nāmnā kṛtaḥ saḥ pituḥ sakāśāt saṁskārān prāpa । tadānīṁ jīvatāpi nāthamuninā pautrāya mantrapradānādikaṁ kiṁcidapi nācaritam । guroḥ sakāśādadhigatavidyaḥ śiṣyo gurūputrādibhyo'pi svenādhigatāṁ vidyāṁ pradadyāditi niyamaḥ svaśiṣyairanuṣṭheya iti nāthamuninātra smāritaḥ ।
kadācit snātotthitamācāryaṁ ke canocuḥ ‘vyādhau vyādhastrī, kapiśca tatra pathā dakṣiṇāmāśāṁ pratyagacchan । kutra nāthamuniḥ? āśu so'smannikaṭamāgacchatu’ ityuktvā jagmuriti । rāmalakṣmaṇau sītayā hanumatā ca māmevamājñāpayata iti matvā nirdiṣṭena pathā aśrupūrṇalocano'dhāvat । kasmiṁścit pradeśe
(gaṅgaikoṇḍacolapure) tānupalebhe, kālagatiṁ ca prāpa ।
nāthamuneḥ kālanirṇaye vivādaḥ pravartate । gurūparamparāsu nāthamuniḥ kaliyuge 3685 tame śubhakṛnnāma saṁvatsare jyeṣṭhamāse śuklatrayodaśyāṁ anurādhāyuktasaumyavāsare jajña ityuktam । triśatādhikacatvāriṁśat varṣāṇyuvāsa ityapyuktam । adhunātanairvimarśakaiḥ varṣaśataparimitameva mānavaṁ vayaḥ । triśatādhikacatvāriṁśat samā na ko'pi manuṣyo jīvituṁ śaktaḥ । ata etatkālaparyantaṁ nāthamunerjīvitakālo'bhyupagantuṁ na yujyata ityabhiprayanti ।
āstāṁ nāmaitat । ālvār nāmakānāṁ divyasūrīṇāṁ kālanirṇayaṁ kiñcidvimṛśāmaḥ । gurūparamparākramānusāreṇa ete divyasūrayaḥ kecit dvāparayugānte, anye kaliyugārambhānantaraṁ jīvitavanta ityucyate । arthāt īsavīyakālaprārambhāt pūrvaṁ 6139 tamāt 2803 tamavarṣaparyantaṁ te babhūvurityuktaṁ bhavati । vimarśakāstu divyasūrīṇāṁ kālaṁ īsavīyakrameṇa 719 tamāt 881 tamavarṣaparyantamiti gurūparamparoktaṁ vihāya divyasūrīṇāmāyuḥ pramāṇamabhyupagamya nirṇītavantaḥ । vimarśakānāṁ nyāyaprakārastvitthaṁ bhavati । śaṭhakopasya kālaḥ īsavīya 798-833 । tacchiṣyo madhurakaviḥ īsavīya 883 tamavarṣaparyantamajīvat । kaliyasya īsavīya 776-881 A.D. । kaliyasya kālānantaraṁ śrīraṅge'dhyayanotsavo yathāpūrvaṁ na prācalat । yadā nāthamuniḥ kurūkāpurīmāsasāda tadānīṁ śaṭhakopo nāsīt । dhyānamāsthito madhurakavistadānīṁ na kasyāpi dṛśya āsīt ।
gāthānāṁ sahastracatuṣṭayamapi luptamabhavat । īsavīyadaśamaśatakaprārambhakāle nāthamuniḥ samabhavaditi nirṇeyaḥ ।
atradivyasūrīṇāṁ kālanirṇaye'pi kiñcidvaktavyaṁ bhavati । parameśvaraviṇṇagaramiti kāñcyāṁ vilasato vaikuṇṭhanāthasyālayasya nāmāntaram । kāñcīrājena parameśvaranāmadheyena (660-680) ālayo'yaṁ nirmitaḥ । tadanantaramevāsyālayasya parameśvaraviṣṇagaramiti prathā jātā । purātanakāle māmallapuramiti khyātasya pradeśasya samudratīrasthasyādhunā mahābalipuramiti nāma vartate । māmalletyasya pūrvaṁ rūpaṁ mahāmalla ityāsīt । kāñcyāṁ īsavīya (680-700) tamavarṣaparyantaṁ rājyaṁ śāsitavataḥ pallavarājasya narasiṁhavarmaṇo birudaṁ mahāmalla ityāsīt । māmallapuramapyetadrājyāntargatamāsīt । asmātkālādārabhya eva mahābalipurasyedaṁ nāma māmalla iti babhūvetyaṅgīkartavyam ।
bhūtasaromahākhyā divyasūriṣu prathamā babhūvuḥ । trayaścaite siddhārthanāma vatsare īsavīye 719 tame varṣe prādurbabhūvuḥ । etaiḥ svagantheṣu prathamāntāyāṁ 77 padye, dvitīyāyāṁ 70 padye, tṛtīyāyāṁ ca 61, 62 padmayośca krameṇa parameśvaraviṇṇagara iti māmalla iti ca nāmnā etannāmakakṣetrasthau bhagavantāvastūyetām । parameśvareti viśeṣaṇaṁ nopalabhyate, parantu etadviśiṣṭaṁ viṇṇagarameva vivakṣitamiti jāyate । ata eteṣāṁ trayāṇāṁ divyasūrīṇāṁ kālaḥ
īsavīye aṣṭamaśataka iti nirṇayaḥ kāryaḥ । kaliyaḥ svīye periyatirumolināmake granthe (2.8.10) pallavaśreṣṭhena vairameghena rājñā kāñcayāmaṣṭabhujākhyo bhagavān vandita iti varṇayāmāsa । kaliyasya kāle'yaṁ rājā bhagavantamaṣṭabhujamabhivandamāna iti vartamānakālasūcakapadaprayogeṇa vairamegha iti birudabhāk dantivarmā kācyāṁ īsavīye 754 tame varṣe jīvan bhagavantaṁ ca vandamāna āsīditi jñāyate । īsavīye 790 tame varṣe madrapuryāṁ śrīpārthasārathisvāmina ālayasyāyaṁ vairamegho jīrṇoddhāraṁ kṛtavāniti śilāśāsanājjāyate । anena īsavīye aṣṭamaśatakāvasane navame ca sa rājā rājyaṁ śāsadevāsīdityabhyupeyam । yataḥ kaliyo vartamānapadaprayogeṇa vairameghasya bhagavato'ṣṭabhujasyābhivandanaṁ varṇayati, ataḥ-śilāśāsanāt yathā īsavīye 754 tame varṣe sa rājā bhagavantaṁ vandamāno babhūva, tathā īsavīya 790 tame varṣe'pi tathaiva bhagavato'bhivandanaṁ kurvāṇa evāsīdityabhyupagamaḥ prāmāṇika eva । eṣa eva kaliyasya kālaḥ । ādhunikavimarśakairabhyupagato divyasūrīṇāṁ kālo'bādhita evāvatiṣṭhate ।
yadi tu nāthamuneḥ kālaḥ īsavīya 584 tamāt 924 tamaparyanta ityaṅgīkartavyaḥ, tarhi kathaṁ sa yathānirdiṣṭakāle jīvitavadbhirdivyasūribhiḥ samāgamaṁ nādhyagacchat? prathamadvitīyatṛtīyadivyasūrīṇāṁ janmavatsarāt 135 varṣebhyaḥ pūrvaṁ jāto nāthamuniḥ khalu । aparyāptāmṛteti padyaṁ vā sahastrāgāthasvānyatamaṁ taditi vā kathaṁ sa na viveda? kumbhaghoṇakṣetre sthitaṁ śārṅgapāṇiṁ bhagavantaṁ kiṁ nāsevata? tadānīṁ kimaparyāptāmṛtapadyapāṭhakairna tatrādhyuṣitam । vimarśakairnirṇīto divyasūrīṇāṁ kālo'nabhimato'pi pramāṇādhāratvāt kathañcitsvīkārya eva ।
atha yogānuśāsanam ॥ 1 ॥
atha iti maṅgalārthakaḥ prārambhārthakaśca । “maṅgalānantarārambhapraśnakātsnyeṣvatho atha” iti nāmaliṅgānuśāsanam । tataśca anādita eva yogatattvamanusyūtamiti siddhaṁ bhavati ।
yathā asaṁskṛtasya vastuno'nupayogaḥ, evamasaṁskṛtasya śarīrasya tattvajñānakarmānuṣṭhānādāvityatra na bahu vaktavyaṁ bhavati । prasiddhaṁ hi idamadhyātmaśāstrakarmaśāstrādau । saṁskāro nāma cetanācetanavastuna uttaratra sadupayoge yogyatādhānam yathā upanītasyādhyayane, vivāhitāyā garbhādhāne, gṛhyaśrautakarmasu homādau ca srugādīnām । evaṁ prāktanasaṁpradāyajñairnirṇītaṁ yadanaṣṭhitayogasya puruṣasya striyo vā sarvāsu kriyāsvanadhikāra iti । śārīrakaśāstreṣu ca sacetanaśarīrasya saṁskṛtasyādhikāro yogasaṁskṛtsyaiva jñeyamiti ।
prathamasūtrasya nāma pratijñāsūtramiti ।
yogaścittavṛttinirodhaḥ ॥ 2 ॥
āhaṅgārikaṁ hi cittaṁ jaḍamacetanaṁ purogaṁ pratyaggaṁ vā svātantryeṇa bhavitaṁ nārhati । na hi nirīśvarasāṁkhyavat pātañjalāḥ prakṛtimananyādhīnakartrīmabhyupagacchanti । praṇavavācaka paramātmānaṁ sarvajñaṁ saguṇaṁ nigrahānugrahaśālinaṁ dayāvantañcābhyupagacchanti । tasmāt cittasya purogāmitve pratyaggāmitve ca sarveśvarasya paramātmano'nugrahaviśeṣaṁ prāptasya jīvātmanaḥ prayatnaviśeṣeṇa cittavṛttinirodhaḥ saṁbhavati, tadabhāvavataḥ puruṣaviśeṣasya cittavṛttivikṣepaśca bhavatītyabhyupeyam । prakṛṣṭajñānavatāṁ paramātmānugrahastena cittavṛttinirodhaḥ, tadabhāvavatāṁ tadanugrahābhāvāt cittavikṣepa iti vivekaḥ ।
atra yogapadaṁ dhyānamityarthakam । cittavṛttinirodha iti ca
dhyānavirodhiyāvadbāhyaviṣayakacittapariṇāmanirodha ityarthaḥ । dhyānaṁ ca paramapuruṣasarveśvaraviṣayakaṁ “tajjapastadarthabhāvanami”ti pramāṇāt siddhyati । bhāvanaṁ tadākāreṇa cittasthāpanam, tacca dhyānabalāt bhavati । dhyānaṁ ca “tatra pratyayaikatānatā dhyānami”ti sūtrāt jñeyam ।
rajastamoleśamātrādapyapetaṁ śuddhasattvamayaṁ cittaṁ yadā jīvātmadharmabhūtajñānopaṣṭabdhaprabalaprāṇāyāmādibahuvidhasamabhyāsena hārdāntaryāmyabhimukhamanukṣaṇasmaraṇabalāt pravartate tādṛśapravṛtteḥ tādṛśacittasya vā ekāgratā, sā pratyayaikatānatā iti niṣpannā nirūḍhayogināṁ saṁjñā । ārurukṣūṇāṁ tatraiva dhyānamiti prathā । hārdāntaryāmyabhimukhopāyānusaṁdhānakramastu “padmakośapratīkāśaṁ ...... paramasvarāṭ” iti nārāyaṇasūktāt vijñeyam ।
nāmaliṅgānuśāsanāt pramāṇāt yogapadaṁ dhyānārthakamityavagabhyate । “yuja samādhau” iti dhātupāṭhapramāṇāt tat samādhiṁ vakti । tatrobhayatra kutra ādaraḥ? dhyānasya samādheśca kāryakāraṇabhāvo'ṅgīkṛtaḥ । samādhistu dhyānaparipakvāvasthaiva na tu sādhyāntaram । ata eva “tadevārthamātranirbhāsamiti” sūtrakāro bhagavān patañjaliraha ।
tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe'vasthānam ॥ 3 ॥
ādyadvitīyasūtrābhyāṁ yogārambho'tha lakṣaṇam ।
tṛtīye'smin yogasūtre draṣṭū rūpamihocyate ॥
phullapuṣpāyate satsu yogavallī nirantaram ।
saiva bhallāyate kṣudrayogimānavasammukhe ॥
tadā sadrūpadeśalabdhaniyamayutasāṅgayogāṅgasaṁghātakriyānuṣṭhānabalanirastasamastakāmādyanantaraśabdādi- bāhyaviṣayaviṣayakacittavikṣepakāle, draṣṭuḥ, sṛṣṭisthitikālīnaparamapuruṣasarveśvarasatyasaṅkalpabalamātralabdha- prākṛtakaraṇakalebarasya baddhajīvasya janmāntarācaritapuṇyapāpasvāṅgīkṛtasvāparādhanimittakaduḥkhānubhavasya ityarthaḥ ।
svarūpe svasya jīvasya yadrūpaṁ pariśuddhaṁ, śrībhagavadgītātrayodaśādhyāye yathoktaṁ “jñānaṁ jñeyaṁ jñānagamyaṁ hṛdi sarvasya viṣṭhitamiti । ” tasminnavasthānam ।
avasthānaṁ, ava sarvatra viṣṭhitaṁ, viśeṣeṇa sthitam । paramācāryairnāthamunipautrairapi
“dehendriyamanaḥprāṇadhībhyo'nyo'nanyasādhanaḥ ।
nityo vyāpī pratikṣetramātmā bhinnaḥ svataḥ sukhī ॥ ”
ityātmasiddhau prakaṭīkṛtam । tādṛkpariśuddhamapi prākṛtakaraṇakalebaraṁ pātañjalayogasaṁskṛtaṁ cet nityajñānānandamayasvarupaprāptikāraṇaṁ bhavati ।
draṣṭuḥ, darśanakartuḥ ātmanaḥ jīvasya darśanamālokanamīkṣaṇamityarthaḥ । kimīkṣyate? cittavikṣepadaśayāṁ bāhyāni vastūni cittadvārā । na kevalamīkṣaṇaṁ, tajjanyasukhaduḥkhāni prārabdhakarmavāsanābalādanubhavati । nirodhāvasthāyāṁ tu pariśuddhaṁ svasvarūpaṁ jñānānandaṁ bhāsate । nirodhābhyāsaprābalyādudbhūtadhyānaviśeṣo nirdhūtarajastamomayaśca jīvo dhyeyaṁ paramātmānaṁ ca kiñcitkālam sākṣātkaroti । tadānīṁ bāhyaviṣayān vismarati ca ।
sūtrārthastu, tadā, cittavṛttirodhasamaye, draṣṭuḥ jīvātmanaḥ, svarūpe jñānaghanajñānānandasvarūpe, avasthānamantarbahiḥsthitiriti jñeyam ।
svarūpasthitisūtre tu draṣṭurityasya varṇanam ।
īkṣākarturiti spaṣṭaṁ svarūpāvasthiterbalāt ॥
vṛttisārupyamitaratra ॥ 4 ॥
cittavṛttivikṣepakāle sattvarajastamorūpaguṇatrayaprākṛta (prākṛtapariṇāmāhaṁkāravikāra) puruṣabhedena vibhinnaṁ sat prāktanakarmavāsanābalāt cittamiti nāmnā prathitaṁ ca yadyapi rūpaṁ labhate, tattatsamānākāreṇa pariṇatatādṛśaprākṛtakāyabaddhaḥ sa sa puruṣaḥ tatsamānākāraṁ labdhvā tādṛkkāyalābhāt prākguṇamayaprākṛtarūpavihīnopīdānīṁ tallābhānantaraṁ yathā śailūṣo vibhaktaveṣabhūṣādhāraṇena svayameko'pi nānā nāmāni labhate, nānāpravṛttimān bhūtvā vividhāni phalānyanubhavannivābhinayati, tathā ayamapi labdhaprākṛtakāyo vicitrarūpalāvaṇyabhāṣāvān bhūtvā tadanuguṇāni bhāṣaṇāni karmāṇi ca kurvan tajjanyaphalānyanubhavan kvacit khidyati, kvacit tuṣyati, kvaciccanṛtyati, gāyati, rauti ca ।
cittapadamatra prāktanakarmabalalabdhabaddhāvasthāparaṁ jīvasyeti nāradāya sanatkumāropadiṣṭabhūmavidyāntargatachāndogye saptame'dhyāye dṛśyate “cittaṁ vāva saṁkalpāt bhūyaḥ” iti vākye ।
sūtrārthastu, itaratra, cittavikṣepakāle, vṛttisārūpyaṁ yā yāścittavṛttayo draṣṭurityadhyāhārāt puruṣasya ityartho labhyate yādṛgyādṛrūpavatyaḥ tattatsamānarūpatāṁ puruṣo labhate । puruṣa iti jātyekavacanam ।
yogavallīṁ budhāḥ prāhurjñānabhogadhanapradām ।
jñānavallī bhogavallī dhanavallīti ca tridhā ॥
akāmānāṁ jñānavallī dhanavallī phalārthinām ।
ātmasāyujyakāmānāṁ bhogavallī hadi sthitā ॥
yāvadrūpāṇi loke'smin carācaraparātmanām ।
tāvadrūpāṇi labhate yogavallī parātparā ॥
yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇa iti bhīṣmaḥ provāca bhūtale ।
kṛṣṇapriyāṁ yogavallīṁ sarvadevā jagurdivi ॥
vartamānā cittavṛttirvṛttihīnān karoti hi ।
tasmāt kurudhvaṁ cittasya rodhaṁ prāpta patañjaliḥ ॥
śrīmānnāthamuniḥ prāha patañjalimataṁ bhuvi ।
yāvat tiṣṭhati no rogo nājñānaṁ na bhayaṁ sadā ॥
yogavallīprasādānme sākṣātkāro'bhavat trayam ।
tattvānāntena nānyo'hamabhavaṁ samayī sadā ॥
smarāmyahaṁ yogavallīsukhaṁ nārāyaṇaṁ sadā ।
śaṅkhacakragadāśārṅgahastaṁ caturbhujam ॥
vṛttayaḥ pañcatayyaḥ kliṣṭākliṣṭāḥ ॥ 5 ॥
catussūtrī samāptī hi vṛttisūtraṁ pravartate ।
vaividhyena tathā sākaṁ vṛttirodhakramassphuṭam ॥
cittasyetyādhyāhāraḥ । vṛttirjñānaṁ pramāṇaṁ ca binā viṣayālambanaṁ na vartate । ato'tra vṛttirviṣayāśritā । tadarthaṁ cintyate । sarvatreyaṁ vyavasthā darīdṛśyate jānāti icchati yatata iti । arthāt yaḥ ko'pi puruṣo yasmin kasmin viṣaye kāmaṁ pravartatāṁ tatra tasya praprathamaṁ tadviṣayakajñānaṁ tatastadicchā tadantarameva tadādāne yatna iti pāramārthikī sthitiḥ ।
asmin mate tu ātmā manasā saṁyujyate, mana indriyeṇa indriyamarthena tata idamitthamiti kramaḥ । ātmanyeva tattatjñānaṁ, jñānānubhavaśca । ātmā iti jīvātmānaṁ bodhayati । tasya manaḥsaṁyogaśca sarvaniyantṛparamātmādhīna iti dik । uktaṁ hi bhagavadgītāyāṁ “adhiṣṭhānaṁ tathā....... karte”ti ॥ jīvātmanaḥ prāktanajanmakṛtakarmavāsanānuguṇa eva paramātmasaṁkalpaḥ tadanuguṇa eva tasya jīvasya iha janmani yasmin kasminnapi pravṛttiḥ । prārabdhakarmānuguṇaṁ ca bhagavadanumatirvartate । na tviyaṁ tasyājñā । tattanmanasā saṁyujyata ityāsmākīnaḥ panthāḥ । sarvaśarīravartijīvapravṛttau iyameva saraṇiḥ । jīvaprayatno nityo hetubalāt śuddhāśuddhaśceti ।
vṛttayaḥ pañcadhā proktāḥ kliṣṭākliṣṭavibhāgaśaḥ ।
duḥkhadā prathamā uktā dvitīyā guṇavairiṇaḥ ॥
cittamekameva, tadavayavāstu pañcasaṁkhyākāḥ । tāśca duḥkhahetavaḥ triguṇamayyaḥ kliṣṭā ityucyante । prakṛtipuruṣavivekajñānahetavo vairāgyatattvajijñāsāḥ sadācāryasevārūpā akliṣṭā ityucyante । udriktatriguṇaṁ cittaṁ puruṣaṁ santatameva kliśnāti । cittasya prākṛtaguṇodrekaścānudrekaścobhau bhoktṛbhuktasadasadāhārapariṇāmabalādhīnāvitīdaṁ chāndogye “annamayaṁ hi saumya manaḥ” ityatrāvagantavyam । “āhāraśuddhau sattvaśuddhi”rityatra ca । gītāyāṁ tu “āyuḥ sattvabalārogya ............” ityuktam ।
tapasā śoṣaya medaḥ kāyaṁ, payasā secaya jāṭharamanalam ।
manasā cintaya paramātmānaṁ vadane ghoṣaya vedaṁ nityam ॥
sukhecchā yadi te'stīha sadā yoge ratiṁ kuru ।
duḥkhecchā yadi te'stīha sadā'yoge ratiṁ kuru ॥
kuru kuru dharma svīyannityaṁ vasa vasa vāse yogye deśe ।
paṭha paṭha vedān kalye kalye cara cara sandhyāṁ kāle kāle ॥
cittaikāgryaṁ yogābhyāse cittakṣepo yogabhraṁśe ।
cittaṁ mattaṁ svāpe pāpe cittākārañcitraṁ loke ॥
saṁśayādāśrayabhoktāramādau nirvāpayetsudhīḥ ।
nirmūlitasaṁśayāyāsmai śeṣaśāyine namaḥ ॥
pramāṇaviparyayavikalpanidrāsmṛtaya ॥ 6 ॥
vṛttināmasūtramidam । pramāṇavṛttiḥ viparyayavṛttiḥ vikalpavṛttiḥ nidrāvṛttiḥ smṛtivṛttiriti pratyekaṁ vṛttipadamanuṣajyate । kasya vṛttirityapekṣāyāṁ cittasyetyuttaram । vṛttiriti pariṇāmārthakaṁ padam । pariṇāmo rūpāntaramityabhinnārthakaṁ padadvayam । tathā ca cittavṛttiḥ cittapariṇāmaḥ cittasya rūpāntaramityāyātam । tarhi cittasya kiṁ naijaṁ rūpam? traiguṇyamiti kecana । triguṇāśca sattvarajastamāṁsi । prakāśacalanagauravakaraṁ svātantryeṇa ātmālambanena ātmasānnidhyena cittaṁ pariṇamata iti sāṁkhyāḥ, prapañcamithyātvavādino'vaidikadarśanakartāraśca । paramātmapreraṇādhīnajīvātmasaṁbandhāditi sāṁpradāyikayoginaḥ prācīnāḥ prapañcajīvātmaparamātmasatyatvavādinaḥ śiṣṭā vaidikadarśanakārāścetare । yathā tathā vāstu vinā ātmasaṁbandhaṁ cittavṛttinirūpeti sarvairabhyupeyam ।
pramīyata iti pramā । pramāyāḥ karaṇaṁ pramāṇam ।
anubhavaviruddhaṁ parita eti gacchatīti viparyayaḥ ।
anubhavaviruddhaṁ kalpyata iti vikalpaḥ ।
nitarāṁ drāti kutsāṁ gatiṁ prāpnotīti nidrā ।
smarati pūrvānubhūtimiti smṛtiḥ ।
prāktanakarmavāsanāvaicitryanibandhalabdhadehānāmātmanāṁ manasāṁ cāsaṁkhyākatvena vṛttīnāṁ cāsaṁkhyākatvamiti yadyapi bhāti tathāpi tāsāṁ sarvāsāmapyāsu pañcasvevāntarbhāvaṁ bhagavānpatañjalirmanyate ।
pratyakṣānumānāgamāḥ pramāṇāni ॥ 7 ॥
pramāṇasaṁkhyeyattāsūtramidam । pratyakṣānumānopamānaśabdāḥ pramāṇānīti naiyāyikāḥ । tāni cārthāpattisahitānīti prābhākarāḥ । tānyanupalabdhisahitānīti bhāṭṭāḥ । aitihyasahitāni tānīti paurāṇikāḥ । kapilapatañjalī tu trīṇyevetyasthāpayatām । aupaniṣadā vedāntino'pi kāpilapātañjalapathānusāriṇa iti pramāṇapadavī prakāśate ।
pratyakṣapramāṇe sākṣādvā parasparayā vendriyasannikarṣeṇa ātmamanasoḥ pravṛttiriti bodhyam । anumāne'pyekadeśasākṣātkārasyāpi tathaiveti । āptavākyarūpaśabdasya bhramapramādādīnāmasaṁbhavāt nissandigdhaṁ prāmāṇyam । vedānāṁ tu sarvadaiva svataḥ prāmāṇyam saṁbhavati । uktaṁ hyāpastambadharmasūtre “dharmajñasamayaḥ pramāṇaṁ vedāśca” iti । sarveṣvapi pramāṇeṣvanuttamaṁ śabdapramāṇam । vinā taṁ kīdagvidhasyāpi jīvanasyāsaṁbhavāditi pātañjalāḥ ।
yathāpyaupaniṣadabrahmajijñāsāyāṁ “so'śnute sarvān kāmān saha, brahmaṇā vipaściteti”, sarvakāmāvāptiḥ brahmajñānasya phalamātyantikaduḥkhanivṛttidvārā ityuktaṁ tathāpi pātañjalayogaśāstroktayogānuṣṭhānasya sakramasya saniyamasya ca tādṛgbrahmaprāptiphalakatvamapītyaṅgīkāryam । tathaiva sakalopaniṣatsu pratipāditatvāttathāvidhabrahmabodhakaśāstre pramāṇaṁ kevalaṁ śrutismṛtyodaya eva na tu pratyakṣānumāne iti bahavaḥ santo manyante । tulyabalatvādubhayorupaniṣadyogayorvikalpaṁ manyante ।
viparyayo mithyājñānamatadrūpapratiṣṭham ॥ 8 ॥
pratyakṣānubhavavirodhenāviṣayaviṣayakavṛttirviparyayavṛttiḥ atadrūpratiṣṭhaṁ jñānaṁ viparyaya ityucyate । tasya saṁjñā mithyājñānamiti । taddharmarahite taddharmatābuddhiratadrūpam ।
śabdajñānānupātī vastuśūnyo vikalpaḥ ॥ 9 ॥
pātañjalamahābhāṣyamanusṛtya vikalpasūtravivaraṇe susaṁskṛtaśabdamātrasyaiva nirarthakaṁ nāstīti pātañjalasiddhāntasthāpanāt vikalpasūtradhāritāḥ śabdā arthābhāvavanta ityeko nirṇayaḥ । bāhyendriyagocarasyārthasya (viṣayāṇāmabhāvaḥ) viṣayabodhakarūpatvaṁ nāstītyaparo nirṇayaḥ । sarveṣāṁ śabdānāṁ vyutpannatvamavyutpannatvaṁ cābhyupagamya śāṇḍilyavidyoktarītyā sarveṣāṁ bhavatīti bāhyārthaśūnyabodhakatvamiti tṛtīyo nirṇayaḥ । tadanusṛtyaiva vastuśūnyo vikalpa iti patañjalirāha । sūtrārthastu, vikalpacittavṛttirarthaśūnyo viṣayābhāvavān, parantu śabdajñānamanupatati । ato, rāma iti śabdaḥ, rāma iti jñānaṁ, rāma iti arthaśca tatra na santi ।
abhāvaprayayālambanā vṛttirnidrā ॥ 10 ॥
yasyāścittavṛtterabhāvapratyaya evālambanaṁ (āśrayaḥ) sā vṛttirabhāvapratyayālambanā । tāṁ nidreti prāhuḥ । tatra tamasaḥ prādhānyam । niṣpratiyogikābhāvasyāprasiddhatvāt । atra sūtre'bhāvapratiyoginaḥ sarve bāhyaviṣayāḥ (na tu sarvaviṣayābhāvaḥ) । tathā ca yāvadbāhyaviṣayapratiyogiko'bhāva iti phalitam ।
anubhūtaviṣayāsaṁpramoṣaḥ smṛtiḥ ॥ 11 ॥
bāhyaviṣayeṇa sākaṁ bāhyendriyasaṁbandhānantaraṁ jāyamāno manaḥpariṇāmaviśeṣa ātmajñānopaṣṭabdho yo bhāvaḥ, sa anubhava ityucyate । anubhūtiranubhava ityekārthakam । tādṛśānubhavadārḍhyeṇa (nairantaryeṇa) kācana apūrvā śaktirātmasaṁyukte manasi jāyate । sā śaktiḥ saṁskāra ityucyate । tanmahimnaiva smṛtirudeti । sā ca jñānaviśeṣacittavikāraḥ । tadānīṁ (smṛtikāle) viṣayasya sthitiranāvaśyakī । saṁskārabalādeva pūrvānubhūtaviṣayākāra ātmasaṁyukte manasyudbhavati tadevāsaṁpramoṣo'nāvaraṇamityucyate ।
paramātmaparatantra eva sarvacetamācetanaprapañca iti nāthamuniracitayogarahasyasya rahasyam । etena ātmānadhīna eva cittapariṇāma iti vadanto nirastāḥ, cittasya kṣaṇikatvāt (kṣaṇapariṇāmitvāt) । tanmate'nubhavāvasthā saṁskārāvasthā tadapramoṣāvasthā tatkṛtasmaraṇāvasthā ca durupapādāḥ ।
abhyāsavairāgyābhyāṁ tannirodhaḥ ॥ 12 ॥
bāhyaviṣayavairāgyaviśiṣṭaprakṛtipuruṣavivekadarśanabalāt pūrvoktapañcavidhacittavṛttīnāṁ nirodhaḥ । prakṛtiḥ puruṣāt bhinnaḥ । puruṣaḥ prakṛterbhinna iti mānasiko'bhyāsaḥ kartavyaḥ ।
tatra sthitau yatnā'bhyāsaḥ ॥ 13 ॥
pūrvoktavairāgyābhyāsayorubhayormadhye'bhyāsaḥ prakṛtipuruṣavivekabhedajñānamananaṁ tajjanitā yā praśāntasthitistasyāṁ yatnaḥ prayatna ityarthaḥ ।
sa tu dīrghakālanairantaryasatkārāsevito dṛḍhabhūmiḥ ॥ 14 ॥
pūrvasūtrokto yatnastu dīrghakālasevitaścet dīrghaṁ yāvadāyuṣaṁ nairantaryasevitaścet satkārapūrvakaṁ sevitaścet pūjyabuddhisevitaścet ādarapūrvakaṁ sevitaścet premasahitaṁ sevitaścet dṛḍhabhūmirbhavati । tena dhātudārḍhyamindriyaśakti śarīravṛddhiścāmoghāni bhavanti ।
dṛṣṭānuśravikaviṣayavitṛṣṇasya vaśīkārasaṁjñā vairāgyam ॥ 15 ॥
viṣayo bāhyendriyagrāhyapadāryaḥ । sa ca bhūloke'nubhavayogyaśabdasparśarūparasagandhaviśiṣṭaḥ prākṛtapariṇāmarūpapadārthoṁ dṛṣṭaviṣayaḥ । ānuśravakaviṣayāśca guruśiṣyaparaṁparāmanusṛtyaśrotrendriyaviṣayāḥ kriyante । tāśca śrutayo vedāḥ । tatra bhavo bāhmendriyāviṣayībhūto vijātīyaśabdasparśarūparasagandhaviśiṣṭaviṣayaḥ । sa ca svargīyastryannapānāmṛtādirūpa āmuṣmikaḥ । tataśca dvau viṣayau bhoganirṇītau । taduktaṁ sūtrakāreṇa “dṛṣṭānuśravikaviṣaya” iti । yeṣu dṛṣṭānuśravikaviṣayeṣu yasya puruṣasya jīvasya tyaktā āśā, sa dṛṣṭānuśravikaviṣayavitṛṣṇa iti viśiṣṭapadaṁ labdham । tacca ātmasaṁyuktamanodharmaḥ । uktaṁ hi hanumatā “mano hi hetuḥ sarveṣāṁ indriyāṇāṁ pravartane । śubhāśubhāsvavasthāsu tacca me suvyavasthitam” iti ।
īdṛśavairāgyasya ākārastu nāhaṁ bhuñje dṛṣṭānānuśravikāṁśca viṣayān, na paśyāmi, na yāmi tatsamīpaṁ, na smarāmi ca । kutaḥ? etāvatkālaṁ tadbhogāt, tatsmaraṇāt, tatra yānāt, taddarśanāt madīye śarīre aindriyakaprāṇavāyavīyāḥ śaktayaḥ kuṇṭhitā abhavan । itaḥ paraṁ nāhaṁ bhaumān svargīyāṁśca viṣayānicchāmi iti pratijñārūpamanodharmaḥ । evamanusaṁdhāno yaḥ ko'pi puruṣaḥ strī vā asti cet bhuvi, tasya vaśīkarasaṁjñā vairāgyavān iti śāśvataḥ saṁketo bhavati ।
tatparaṁ puruṣakhyāterguṇavetṛṣṇyam ॥ 16 ॥
vairāgyaṁ, jñānaṁ, bhaktiritīdaṁ tritayaṁ parāparabhedena dvividhaṁ bhavati । ato vaśīkārasaṁjñātmakaṁ vairāgyaṁ ca dvividham । tat vaśīkārasaṁjñāvairāgyamaparaṁ pūrvoktam । puruṣakhyāteḥ puruṣasya prakṛtibaddhajīvasya pariśuddhasya darśanasamānākārajñānāt kāraṇāt yadā guṇavaitṛṣṇyaṁ, guṇānāṁ prakṛtisamavetānāṁ sattvarajastamasāṁ tatpariṇāmatacchākhopaśākhāsvātyantikecchāvirahobhavati, tadā paraṁ paravairāgyamiti saṁjñāṁ labhate ।
vitarkavicārānandāsmitārūpānugamātsaṁprajñātaḥ ॥ 17 ॥
vairāgyavivekābhyāsabalena niruddhacittavṛttiḥ puruṣaḥ yasmin viṣaye ekāgratāmanubhūya sthūle vā sūkṣme vā viṣaye'vayavaśo vā piṇḍībhūya tadviṣayavṛttisālaṁkṛtasvarūpaṁ jānannāste (bhāvayannāste) tādṛśakālīnaikāgratāviśiṣṭātmānubhavaḥ saṁprajñāta ityucyate । (bāhyaviṣayavismaraṇena) ।
yathā “ya eṣa saṁprasādo'smāccharīrātsamutthāya paraṁ jyotirupasaṁpadya svena rūpeṇābhiniṣpadyate” ityatra pratipāditarītyā prākṛtaśarīrarahitasya parasātmānugrahalavdhaparamātmasaṁpattikāle paramātmadarśanalābhādiḥ, evaṁ samādhikāle saśarīro'pi svasyātyantikabhaktyanubhavāt labdhaparamātmānugrahaviśeṣeṇa ko'haṁ? kiṁ jātīyakaḥ? ko vāsaḥ? ityādayo ye ye prākṛtaśarīraviṣayakā bhāvāḥ savastān vismarati । yathā vā asminneva śarīre vidyamāno'pi suṣuptaḥ puruṣaḥ svīyaṁ svātmānaṁ ca paramātmapariṣvaṅgabalādvismarati । uktaṁ hi chāndogye daharādhikaraṇe “aharahargacchanta imaṁ brahmalokaṁ na viduriti” ।
śrīmadrāmāyaṇe'śokavanikāyāṁ samādhiṁ prāptāṁ sītāṁ paśyatā hanumatā evamanusaṁhitam ।
“naiṣā paśyati rākṣasyo nemān puṣpaphaladruman ।
ekasthahṛdayā nūnaṁ rāmamevānupaśyati ॥
iti । ekasthahṛdayeti sītā samādhisthitiṁ samādhijanyasukhaṁ ca naiṣā paśyatītyādinā ca svaśarīrabādhāśca vismarantī sthitaiveti gamyate । rāmamevānupaśyatītyanena saṁsāravismaraṇaṁ ca dyotyate ।
virāmapratyayābhyāsapūrvaḥ saṁskāraśeṣo'nyaḥ ॥ 18 ॥
virāmaḥ cittavṛttīnāmātyantikābhāvaḥ, tasya pratyayo jñānam indriyāṇāṁ viṣayaiḥ sākaṁ krīḍā tyaktā iti jñānam । tasyaiva, tādṛśatyāgasyaiva, paunaḥpunyena vāraṁ vāramanuṣṭhānamabhyāsaḥ । sa eva pūrvaḥ, pūrvakālīnaḥ । atha ca saṁskāraśeṣaḥ pūrvānubhūtacaturvidhasaṁprajñātānubhavakālikajanyaḥ saṁskāraśeṣaḥ । dhyeyadhyātrorevākārāpannatāsthitiḥ, na tvekatvam, asaṁprajñātasamādhirityucyate । vinā saṁprajñātasamādhyanubhavamasaṁprajñātasamādheranavakāśaḥ । idaṁ dvayamapi śarīrasyaiva na tu paroktasadehamuktirūpasya । ata eva svargyaṁ “atra brahma samaśnute” ityāveditam । atreti bhagavaddhyānāvasthāyāṁ, atra svaśarīrāvasthāyāmeva svānuṣṭheyanityanaimittikabhagavaddhyānakāle ityuktam । idaṁ ca prārabdhakarmaṇāṁ bhogādeva kṣaya iti nyāyamanusṛtyoktam । yāvaccharīrapātaṁ prārabdhakarmabhogasyātyājyatvāt, balāt dehatyāge ātmahananaprayuktadoṣāt punaḥ prākṛtaśarīrāpattiḥ । ata eva “kauṭilye sati śikṣayāpyanaghayan kroḍīkaroti prabhuḥ” iti nigamānta mahādeśikoktī rahasyatrayasāre sthirīkṛtā ।
bhavaprayayo videhaprakṛtilayānām ॥ 19 ॥
bhavapratyayaḥ, bhavatīti bhavaḥ, utpadyata iti bhavaḥ । punarutpāda iti tātparyam । punarjanma tasyaiva bandha iti navīnavedāntinaḥ । tasyotpatteḥ pratyayaḥ kāraṇaṁ kimityāśaṅkāyāṁ nirodhasamādhirityadhyāhāraḥ । punarjanmanaḥ kāraṇaṁ nirodhasamādhirbhaviṣyatīti । keṣāṁ? videhaprakṛtilayānāṁ bubhukṣaṇāṁ nirodhasamādhiḥ punarjanmakāraṇam । videhāḥ, devāḥ ṣāṭkauśikasthūladehaśūnyāḥ । ṣaṭkośāḥ, dvau śvāsakośau, anyaśca annakośaḥ, dvau malamūtrakośau, ṣaṣṭho jāṭharāgnikośaḥ । eṣāmime kośā vigrahe na santīti videhāḥ । ayamekaḥ saṁghaḥ । anye tu prakṛtilayāḥ । prakṛtiḥ guṇātmikasūkṣmā । tāmevānātmarūpāmapyātmatvabhrāntyā avagatya samādhau dhyeyatvenopāsya (prārabdhakarmavaśāt) tatkratunyāyena gītoktarītyā yaṁ yaṁ vāpi ........... iti nyāyena vā anātmarūpāmapi tāmeva prakṛtiṁ prāpya tatraiva prakṛtau līnā ye teṣāṁ prakṛtilayānāṁ saṅgho'paraḥ । dvitīyasmin saṁṅghe indriyalīnānāmapyantarbhāvaḥ, yeṣāmupāsyatayā dhyeyatayā upāsanaṁ nirodhasamādhirapi tairabhimanyate । naijanirodhasamādhirnaivaṁrūpā । teṣāṁ tāvānabhimānastatra dhyeyatvena dhyeyāpitatvena paramātmani svaprapadanakarmavismaraṇameva । vismṛteśca prabalaprārabdhakarmavāsanā hetuḥ । sā ca bhagavadarpitātmano bhaktasya paramāparādharūpatanmūlakabhagavannigraha eva punarjanmakāraṇaṁ tātkālikadhyeyanignaharūpam ।
yadyapi bhavapratyayasūtrāvataraṇikā yogabhāṣyakāratadvyākhyātṛtaṭṭippaṇīkārādibhirna dattā, tathāpi pātañjalayogasūtrāṇāṁ brahmasūtraiḥ sākaṁ samatā dṛśyate । atyalapo nyūnatā yogasūtrakāre syāt, ātmaparamātmaprakṛtitattvavivecane śrīmadyāmanamunipraṇītapuruṣanirṇayātmeśvarasiddhyośca pātañjalayogatatdsamīkṣayā pratipāditamevaṁ bhāti yogasādhanaṁ bhagavati parabhaktyudrekāyaiveti । parantu prabalaprācīnakarmavāsanāvāsitāśayamānasādhikārabhedādhikārabhedaḥ samādhipādoktāsaṁprajñātasamādhyanuṣṭhānabhedena ca kāmānāmapi padaṁ pradadātīyamavataraṇikā mandaprajñasaṁdehanivāraṇāyālamiti yogavallīkārasyāśayaḥ ।
śraddhāvīryasmṛtisamādhiprajñāpūrvaka itareṣām ॥ 20 ॥
mumukṣububhukṣubhedena yogino dvividhāḥ । mumukṣūṇāṁ svarūpaṁ śraddhāvīryasūtre pratipāditam । bubhukṣūṇāṁ tu bhavapratyayasūtre vivṛtam । ubhāvapi samāhitau । bubhukṣvanuṣṭheyasamādhiḥ kāmya iti bhavapratyayasūtre patañjalinaiva nigaditam । mumukṣvanuṣṭheyasamādhisādhakāni śraddhāsūtre saṁketitāni । atraiva vilambya samādhisvarūpanirṇayāya siddhaye ca yogarahasye nāthamuniryatate । bahavo janā yogaśāstroktayogānuṣṭhānakramaśca bhagavatpatañjalikālānantarameva na tatprāgityabhiprayanti । samagravedabhāṣyapaṭhanamananābhyāṁ brahmarṣikulayogikulacaritrādhyayane yogānuṣṭhānaṁ yogaśāstraṁ ca sarvadā pravṛttamiti nirṇītam । tadarthaṁ parāśarapurāṇapratipāditayogānuṣṭhānasamādhilakṣaṇānyucyante । nityasūribhyaḥ sanakasanandādibhyo praprathamaṁ yogasya pravaktā śrīmannārāyaṇa eva । te praprathamaṁ samāhitacittāḥ । tebhyaḥ caturmukhāya brahmaṇe yogasaṁpradāya āgataḥ । sa tu yogasaṁpradāyaṁ svamānasaputrāya brahmarṣiśreṣṭhāya vasiṣṭhāya prādāt, vasiṣṭhaḥ svaputrāyāpratihatayogaśaktiyutāya śaktināmakāya, sa ca svaurasaputrāya parāśarāya, parāśarastu svaśiṣyāya, suputrāya ca maitreyavyāsābhyām, vyāsaḥ śukāya iti krama āsīt । yo'sau śukaḥ sarvairbālabrahmayogīti stūyate । sarvatra śāstrīyakarmānuṣṭhāne yogānuṣṭhāne sāṅgavedādhyayane ca guruparamparākramānuṣṭhānaṁ mūlakāraṇaṁ suphalapradaṁ ca, śabdārthajñānarahitakriyānuṣṭhitirviparītaphalapradā ityādhunikairapi vaijñānikairabhyupagatam । yogāṅgānuṣṭhānasopānānyaṣṭau khalu । tatrāṣṭamaḥ samādhiriti pātañjaladvitīyakapāde yamaniyametyatroktam । samādhiśabdo dhyānaśabdaśca tulyārthako athavā bhinnārthakau veti vivecanīyam । samānārthakāveva । atha ca pūrvo dhyānapūrvaka eveti dhyānaprakāraśca tṛtīyapādoktarītyaivānuṣṭheya iti prāguktaguruparaṁparāsaṁpradāyāt siddhayati । dhyānadhyeyadhyāvṛtritayaniścayamantarā, trayāṇāṁ svarūpānubhavamantarā ca samādhirnaivopadeṣṭuṁ śakyā । tāni trīṇyupaniṣatsyeva suṣṭha pratipāditāni । tatra prathamaḥ
“ātmānamaraṇiṁ kṛtvā praṇavaṁ cottarāraṇim ।
dhyānanirmathanābhyāsātpāpaṁ dahati paṇḍitaḥ ॥ ”
iti kaivalyopaniṣadi varṇitam ।
yadā jīvātmā svadharmabhūtajñānena sahātyantikarajastamovihīnaśuddhadhyānātmanā pariṇatamanasā sākaṁ dhyeyasvarūpamanubhavannāste tadā sā sthitiḥ samādhirityabhidhīyate । īdṛśasamādhiśca ahaṁgrahopāsanabalādeva labhyate । sūtroktapañcaparikarāḥ śraddhāvīryādayaḥ sākṣādahaṁgrahopāsanopakārā eva । ekā eva ahaṁgrahopāstiḥ samādhiṁ sākṣāt nirvartayati । ahaṁgrahopāsanaprakāraśca pratardanavidyāyāmindrokte “māmupāssva” nārāyaṇīye “yapuṇḍarīkaṁ puramadhyasaṁstham । tatrāpi dahraṁ gaganaṁ viśokastasmin yadantastadupāsitavyam”, “dhanurgahītvaupaniṣadaṁ mahāstraṁ śaraṁ hyupāsāniśitaṁ sandadhīta, tadbhāvagatena cetasā”, “praṇavo dhanuḥśarohyātmā....śaravattanmayo bhavet” “ātmānaṁ araṇiṁ kṛtvā....devaṁ paśyet nigūḍhavat” “adhyātmayogādhigamena.....harṣaśokau jahāti” ityanyatrāpi paraḥ sahasrasthāneṣu nārāyaṇīyamuṇḍakakaṭhaśāṇḍilyaśvetāśvataraprabhṛtiṣu varṇitaḥ । tatsarvaṁ samyaganusaṁdhāyopāstiḥ kartavyā । ahaṁgnaho nāma ahamityākārakaṁ jñānam । tacca na kevalaṁ, akārahakārānusvāravarṇaparamparārūpaḥ parantu śabdasya “arthāvyabhicāritvādi”tyautpattikasūtrādahaṁśabdasya cārthaḥ kaścana lokikātītaḥ sarvāntaryāmiparamātmaviśiṣṭo jīva eva bhavitumarhati । paramātmano'pi vācako'haṁ śabda eva jīvātmanaśca eka evāhaṁśabdaḥ । tādṛgantaryāmiviśiṣṭajīvātmā ityevaṁ boddhavyam । īdṛganusaṁdhānaṁ na sarvasulabhamiti “nāhaṁ prakāśaḥ sarvasya yogamāyāsamāvṛtaḥ” iti bhagavadgītāyāṁ dhanañjayasārathinā arjunāyopadiṣṭaṁ vismṛtya kecana ahaṁpadārtho nātmabodhakaḥ, api tvahaṁkārapariṇāmarūpabodhaka iti vadanti । tattu padavākyapramāṇaviruddhamiti¹ śabdatattvavida āhuḥ । teṣu ca vedaśabdārthavido na bahumanyante । īdṛgahaṁgrahopāsanameva sarvavidhasamādhinirvartakaṁ mumukṣūṇāṁ ca bhavati । yogabhāṣyakāreṇa śraddhā cetasaḥsaṁprasāda ityādivivaraṇaṁ prathamapravivikṣūṇāṁ modāvahaṁ bhavenna tvahaṁgrahopāsakānām । sarvatropāsyopāsanapadevimaladhyānabodhake, api tu jaivajñānakabalitapratyayātmakameva । ye hi ahaṁpadasyāhaṁkārarūpacittapariṇāmātmakamarthaṁ vadanti, te praṣṭavyāḥ prakṛterdvitīyapariṇāmāhaṁkārasya cetanatvamāhosvit neti । cetanatvaṁ taireva tasya nāstīti nirākṛtamiti nāstyatra vivaraṇasyāvakāśaḥ । acetanatve'pi vicitrāṁ śaktiṁ prakṛterabhyupagacchāma ityāgrahaḥ (cet) punarapi te praṣṭavyāḥ jñānavihīnasya yasya kasyāpi vastuna icchādayaḥ kṛtyādayaśca bimbapratibimbādayaśca kiṁ kvacit tvayā dṛṣṭacarāḥ ? evaṁ yadi, tarhi puruṣāṅgīkāro bhavadīyasiddhānte niṣphala eva । tasmādahaṁ padārtha eko jñānaviśiṣṭo'malo'ṇurjñānasvarūpaścānandī jīva² iti bhavati । antaryāmirūpo'haṁpadārthaḥ sakalakalyāṇaguṇaparipūrṇaḥ sarvaniyantā ānandī ānandapradaścāśritarakṣakaśceti viśeṣa unneyaḥ । dvāvapyahaṁpadārthau jñānākāthau jñānaviśiṣṭau nirmalau sarvādhārau³ iti sarvopaniṣadbhyo viśiṣya muṇḍake praṇavārthavivaraṇācca spaṣṭamavagamyate । īdṛgahaṁgrahopāstiphalībhūtasamādhirabhyāsiprārthanānuguṇakālaparyantā bhavati । atha ca dhyātriṣṭaphalapradaścetyatra vālmīki4parāśaravasiṣṭhanirmitapurāṇāni pramāṇāni । samādhinā suprasanno bhaktaparādhīno bhagavān dhyeyarūpīṣṭāni phalāni dattvā sarvābhya āpadbhyaḥ pālayati5 । atra pramāṇāni rāmāyaṇaprabhṛtigranthāḥ । idamakhilaṁ kurakādhipopadiṣṭe śrīmannāthamunipraṇītayogarahasyasāre6 yāmunamunipraṇītasiddhitrayāntargateśvarasiddhau ca nigaditam । tatraiva vidāṁkurvantu vidvāṁsaḥ ।
samādhirnāma jīvātmaparamātmasaṁbandha ityetāvatā prabandhena niścitaṁ bhavati । tarhi “tadā draṣṭu”riti sūtre samādhiphalasya dṛṣṭuḥ svarūpāvasthiterbādhināt jīvātmaparamātmasaṁbandharūpasamādherajñānāt tatroktanirodhasamādhiphalībhūtadraṣṭṛsvarūpasthitimātrasyoktervirodha iti keṣāṁcit śaṅkā upāsanājñānamūlā ahaṁgrahopāsaneti jñeyam । saṁbaddhavastuṣvekavijñāne sati yāvatsaṁbandhivijñānaṁ bhaviṣyatīti kāraṇavijñānanyāyāt siddham । tathā ca draṣṭuḥsvarūpasūtre ca saṁbandhaḥ śarīraśarīribhāvarūpaḥ, śiṣyācāryabhāvarūpo vā pitṛputrabhāvarūpo vā śeṣaśeṣibhāvarūpo vā yo vā kovā bhavatu । parantu tatsūtraghaṭitadraṣṭṛpadaṁ paramātmaviśiṣṭajīvaparameva । uktaṁ hi navanītanāṭyācāryeṇa “mattaḥ parataraṁ nānyat kiñcidastīti dhanañjaya ……….” “na tadasti vinā yatsyāt mayā bhūtaṁ carācaraṁ” mityarjunopadeśasamaye bhagavadgītāyāmiti yogavallī smārayati ।
tīvrasaṁvegānāmāsannaḥ ॥ 21 ॥
ye cādyaiva samādhinā bhagavatsākṣātkāraṁ prāpnuvāma iti tvarāviśeṣa manasi kṛtvā virāmapratyayasūtroktasamādhisādhanānyanutiṣṭhanti te tīvrasaṁvegāḥ, teṣāṁ tīvrasaṁvegānāmāsanno'tīva samīpataraḥ samādhirahaṁgrahopāsanabalalabdhadhyānadvārā ātmaparamātmalābhamāvahati ।
mṛdumadhyādhimātratvāttato'pi viśeṣaḥ ॥ 22 ॥
īśvarapraṇidhānādvā ॥ 23 ॥
samādhikāraṇaṁ pariśuddhajīvātmanaḥ svarūpajñānaṁ tacca “tadā draṣṭuḥsūtre” vyaktīkṛtam । draṣṭuriti svātmadarśanakartāraṁ bodhayati । svātmapadaṁ jīvaśarīrakaparamātmaparam । jīvaśarīrakaparamātmajñānaṁ śuddhaṁ mitraṁ ca । miśrajñānasya8 śabdabrahmeti prathitamapi sarve na jānanti । tatra svātmasvarūpametadapi pariśuddhasvātmajñānasya kauṣītakyupadiṣṭapratardanavidyāproktāhaṁgrahopāsanasyopakarakaṁ bhūtvā samādhinirvartakaṁ bhavatīti nāthamunīnāmāśayaḥ ।
dvitīyastu samādhau etādṛśāhaṁgrahopāsane'samarthā ye teṣāṁ samādhyapekṣiṇāṁ cittavihepanirasanāya, paravairāgyaprakṛtipuruṣavivekakhyātyabhyāsabalādapi heturiti bhagavatpatañjaleḥ sautramabhiprāyaṁ nāthamunayo'pyaṅgīkurvanti । īdṛśasamādhistattajjaivānādikarmavāsanābalāt kāmyarūpo'pi bhavati । ityādyapyaṅgīkṛtya bhavapratyayasūtroktasamādhiphalamapi keṣāṁcit bhaviṣyatīti tatra tatra yogarahasye prakaṭīkṛtam ।
tṛtīyastu kāraṇaṁ śraddhāvīryasūtroktamevāsmābhiraṅgīkriyata iti sammatirdattā । trividhamapi9 samādhikāraṇānuṣṭhānaṁ kṛtayugapratipāditavarṇāśramadharmānuṣṭhānavat duḥsādhyamiti matvā laghutaraṁ śīghraphalapradaṁ sarvāśramiṇāmanāśramiṇāṁ ca prākṛtaduḥkhatrayanivārakaṁ sarvāśramadharmānuṣṭhānasukaropāyaṁ samādhimupadiśatītyabhiprāyeṇaiva “kimetasmādeva... kaścidanyo'pyupāyaḥ samādhau” iti bhāṣyoktimapyaṅgakṛ.itya “caturthaṁ laghutaramapekṣite'napekṣite vā bhogāpavargaphalapradaṁ samādhyaparanāmadheyaṁ praṇidhānaprapattibhaktipadābhidheyamīśvaropāsanātmakaṁ samādhyupāyaṁ vivakṣati bhagavān patañjaliḥ “īśvarapraṇidhānādvā” iti sūtreṇeti bhagavannāthamunirāha ॥
īśvarapadaṁ 'īśa aiśvarye' iti dhātorniṣpannam । īśvara aiśvaryaśālī । aiśvaryaṁ nityanirupādhikaṁ svasaṁkalpāyattaṁ na tu karmādhīnam । karma vaidikaṁ, tāntrikaṁ, vaidikatāntrikamiti trividhamityanyadetat । tādṛśaiśvaryaviśiṣṭaparamātmā ityarthaḥ । tena tasyānyānadhīnatvaṁ sphorayati । īśvarapraṇidhānamityatra īśvarapadaṁ īśvaramīśvarīṁ10 cābhidhatte । īśvareṇa sākamīśvaryapi jagadsṛṣṭyādikaṁ karotītyabhyupeyam । pāñcarātragrantheṣvidaṁ spaṣṭamupalabhyate । prācīnavedāntina ubhāvapyekenaiva divyadampatītipadena vyavaharanti । īśvarasya praṇidhānaṁ, īśvarapraṇidhānam । prakarṣeṇa nitarāṁ dhīyata iti praṇidhānam । arthādīśvarapādayoḥ svātmano'nanyagatikatvena dṛḍhapremṇā cārpaṇam । tacca trikaraṇaśuddhyā kartavyam । ākārastu trividhatāpābhibhūto'haṁ tāpajanyaduḥkhaparamparāṁ soḍhuṁ na śaknomi tvāmṛte tādṛśaduḥkhanivartako jagatītale sarvasmin nānyo'sti । akiñcano'hamaśakto'hamitaropāyānuṣṭhāne'nucitakāryakaraṇe śāntābhisandhiśca । śāstradṛṣṭyā laukikadṛṣṭyā ca
nirūpādhikaniravadhikadayāvān tvameveti niścitya ātmātmīyaṁ yatkiñcidastisarvaṁ tvadīyameveti samarpayāmītyabhisandhāya nārāyaṇopaniṣaduktayā “omityātmānaṁ yuñjīte”ti rītyā aharahaḥ praṇipatanameva praṇidhānaśabdārthaḥ । īdṛśapraṇidhānādvā samādhiḥ samādhimatvaṁ ca bhavatīti sūtrārthaḥ ।
patañjalimuniproktayogasūtraprathamapāde yogaphalībhūtasamādheḥ kāraṇāni catvāri sūtreṣu nigūḍhāni । samādhyapekṣiṇāmeṣu caturṣvekamanuṣṭheyam । vikalpeneti caturthakāraṇībhūteśvarapraṇidhānasūtre vāśabdoktyā sūtrabhāṣyataṭṭīkāṭṭippaṇīkāraiḥ sphuṭīkṛtaṁ bhavati । “upamāyāṁ vikalpe veti” nāmaliṅgānuśāsanatṛtīyakāṇḍanānārthāvyayavarge vāśabdasya vikalpārthakatvamamarasiṁhenānuśiṣṭam । ityataḥ samādhikāraṇāni catvāri vikalpitānīti vyākhyānaṁ cakruḥ । tatra vastusthitiṁ prāhuḥ yogarahasyakārā nāthamunayaḥ । satyamuktaṁ vāśabdo vikalpārthaṁ bodhayatīti । tarhi sarvaṁ sāpavādamiti nyāyaṁ vismṛtya tathā ṭīkāmakurvanniti yogaśāstrādhyetṛbhirniścatavyamiti । tathā hi-sa evāmarasiṁhaḥ “syurevantu punarvai vetyavadhāraṇavācakā” iti tṛtīyakāṇḍanāmaliṅgānuśāsanāvyayavarge vāśabdasyāvadhāraṇārthakatvamevānvaśāt । tadbalāt samādhakāraṇībhūtacaturṣūpāyeṣu īśvarapraṇidhānātmaka eka eva mukhyopāyo iti yogarahasyavādaprakaraṇe nigaditam । tasyaivopāyasya sarveṣāṁ samādhisādhane sukaratvāt । tadarthameva hi yogavallyāṁ samādhapādo dvedhā vibhaktaḥ pūrva uttaraśceti । pūrvabhāgoktasamādhyupāyā-asmin yuge duḥsādhyā iti sutarāmasādhyā eva । tatrātyantikavairāgyasahitaprakṛtipuruṣavivekakhyātirūpayogopāyaḥ kevalaṁ kṛtayugīnajanānuṣṭhānayogyasyokta iti । tena ca yogānuśāsana pūrvabhāgīnaḥ prathamasūtrādārabhya āntaṁ mṛdumadhyādisūtraparyantaṁ pūrvabhāgīnaḥ, īśvarapraṇidhānasūtrādārabhya saṁpūrṇadvitīyapādaparyantaṁ dvitīyabhāgīna iti vispaṣṭaṁ bhavati । vastutastu saṁpūrṇaprathamapādaparyantameva dvitīyabhāgaḥ । prakṛtamanusarāmaḥ । avyayavargoktanāmaliṅgānuśāsanamādhārīkṛtya sūtrārthavivaraṇe kṛte sati īśvarapraṇidhānarūpopāyena sarveṣāṁ samādhiḥ samādhimatvaṁ ca sulabhe iti spaṣṭaṁ bhavati ।
yogarahasyokto vāvādasārāṁśaḥ । yathā vedokto'pi varṇāśramadharmeṣūtkṛṣṭatamaḥ kṣatriyamātrasādhyo'śvamedhagomedhādiḥ kaliyuge'nuṣṭhātumaśakyatvenānanuṣṭhāne'pi na doṣāvahaḥ, yathā vā varṇāśramadharmeṣu teṣu paramotkṛṣṭaturīyāśramadharmānuṣṭhānaṁ cetarayugeṣu sukhataramapi kaliyuge duḥsādhyamiti “agnyādheyaṁ gavālambhaṁ ......kalau pañca vivarjaye” diti pramāṇānurodhena tadanuṣṭhānavarjane'pi vedātikramarūpadoṣo nāstīti nirṇītaṁ, tathaiva bhagavatpatañjalipraṇītacatuṣpādātmakayogasūtrāntargataprathamapādapratipādyasamādhyupāyabhūta (nirodhasamādhi) samādhyaṅgabhūta (sādhanabhūta) vaśīkārasaṁjñavairāgyāsādhyatvena (kaliyuge) yugadharmamahimnā puruṣāṇāmāyuḥparimāṇasyālpatayā samādhisādhanānuṣṭhānasya kāladairghyamāvaśyakamiti sūtrakāreṇaiva prathamapādapūrvabhāgīne sūtre “dīrghakālanairantaryeti” pramāṇānusāreṇa bahudīrghakālasādhyasamādhisādhanānuṣṭhānasyāsukaratvena prathamapādīnadvitīyabhāgokteśvarapraṇidhānarūpa- bhaktiprapatyoratyantasukaratvenānuṣṭhātrapekṣitabhogāpavargayoranyatarasya susādhyatvamiti nirūpitam । kriyāpādokta “yogāṅganuṣṭhānā” ityatra vivṛtayogāṅgeṣu dvitīyabhāgāntargateśvarapraṇidhānasyaivāvaśyakatvamiti pratipādayitrā bhagavatā patañjalimaharṣiṇā prathamapādīnadvitīyabhāgārambha eva sarvapuruṣāṇāṁ yogānuṣṭhāne īśvarapraṇidhānasyaivātyantasukaratvamiti sūcitam ।
īśvarapadaṁ nirupādhikasarveśvaraparam । tena dhyāneṣu sakalaprakāreṣu dhyeyatayā sarveśvarasya praṇavapratipādyasya lakṣmīviśiṣṭasya vāsudevābhidhānasyaiva grahaṇamityuktaṁ bhavati । lakṣmīviśiṣṭatvaṁ ca pūrvamevoktam । tataśca praṇavapratipādyaḥ śrīmān nārāyaṇa eva samādhyaṅgabhūtadhyāneṣu viṣayaḥ । tathā coktaṁ “praṇavo dhanuḥ śaro hyātmā………… śaravat tanmayo bhavet” । “dhanurgahītvaupaniṣadaṁ ……….. lakṣyaṁ tadeva akṣaraṁ saumya viddhi'” । “omityātmānaṁ yuñjīta” ityādayaḥ pramāṇam, yathā sarveśvarasya nārāyaṇavāsudevapadābhidheyasya “yadbhūtayoniṁ paripaśyanti dhīrā” iti । paripaśyanti dhyāneneti jñeyam । yogināṁ samādhiviṣayatvamevamīśvaryā mahālakṣmyā api “īśvarīgaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ tvāmihopahvaye śriya” mityādiśrutibhiḥ sarvabhūtayonitvaṁ śrutiśatasamadhigataṁ bhavati ।
tathā ceśvare praṇidhānamīśvarapraṇidhānam । praṇidhānaṁ bhaktiviśeṣaḥ parā bhaktiḥ । bhaktiprapattibhyāṁ prasannaḥ sa eva lakṣmīviśiṣṭo nārāyaṇo dhyānātiśayena prītastāpatrayavimokaṁ prayacchati । īdṛśapraṇidhānamātrādeva samādhisiddhimabhimataphalaṁ ca dhyātā prāpnoti । yadyapi prathamapāde pātañjalasūtre prātisvikatayā yogāṅgadhyānādipadāni na pratipāditāni, tathāpi śiraḥprāyabhūtasamādhipadasyānekeṣu sūtreṣūktatvāt tadaṅgabhūtayamādibhiruktaprāyāṇīti veditavyamiti saṁgrahaḥ ।
kleśakarmavipākāśayairaparāmṛṣṭaḥ puruṣaviśeṣa īśvaraḥ ॥ 24 ॥
kleśā ādhyātmikādhidaivikādhibhautikāḥ sarveṣvitaraśāstreṣu prasiddhāḥ । asmin śāstre uttaratra vakṣyamāṇā avidyādayaḥ kleśāḥ । karmāṇi śāstrīyāṇyaśāstrīyāṇīti prāktanakarmamahimnā boddhavyāni । vipāko'vasthāviśeṣaḥ pariṇāmaviśeṣa iti tātparyam । āśayo manasi saṁskārāṇāṁ miśrībhūya ekīkaraṇam । etairaparāmṛṣṭastadantargato'pi tadviyuktāvāptasamastakāmasya sarvadā paripūrṇānandasya karmaphalasaṁyogaviyogābhāvaḥ । paripūrṇasya bhagavataḥ phalāpekṣāyāḥ svata eva dūrotsāritāyā īśvarasaṁyogaviyogayoraprasaktatayā bhūtabhaviṣyadvartamānakālatraye'pi sṛṣṭisthitisaṁhārakāleṣu ca sarvakleśaparāmarśasaṁbhavo dūrotsaritaḥ । īdṛśakleśasabaṁndharahita ityarthaḥ ।
puruṣaviśeṣa īśvaraḥ । puruṣapadaṁ nityasiddhacaitanyaguṇaviśiṣṭātmaparam, ātmānaśacāneke itaratrajīvapadavācyāḥ । asmin sūtre puruṣeti padaṁ “bhagavāniti śabdo'yaṁ tathā puruṣa ityapi, nirupādhī ca vartate vāsudeve parātmani” iti parāśarapurāṇe vāsudevaparatayoktam । viśeṣastu “sahasraśīrṣāpuruṣeti” puruṣasūktabhāṣye ca spaṣṭamuktam । jīvātmanyapi puruṣaśabdaḥ prayujyate । tatraupacārikaprayoga iti jñeyam yathā siṁho māṇavaka iti । puri śete iti puruṣaḥ । 'śīṅ śayane' puri pāñcabhautikaśarīrātmake pattane śete, sukhaṁ nidrātītyarthaḥ । īdṛśaṁ śayanaṁ jīvātmanaḥ paramātmanaśca samam । parantu tatra śayāno'pi paramātmā niyantṛbhāvena dahare śete । “anidraḥ satataṁ rāmaḥ supto'pi ca narottama” iti śrīmadrāmāyaṇamatra pramāṇam । itarastu karmaṇā baddhaḥsan sukhādyanubhavatīti viśeṣaḥ । tatra sthito'pi kuto na baddhaḥ । prākṛtaśarīraindriyakamānasikapariṇāmeṣu kuto na saktaḥ? ayamatra samādhiḥ । saḥ sarvadā ānandī । anye prākṛtaguṇāstatra na prasaranti । ṣaḍrasopetāhārabhojanena tṛptasya viśeṣabhojane nāpekṣātra tadvat paripūrṇasya puruṣaviśeṣasyāntaryāmitayā hṛdi sthitasyāpi na prākṛtaguṇabhogāpekṣā । atyantasannihitā api prākṛtā guṇā nāntaryāmiṇaṁ bādhante । yat tejasvī ojasvī bhrājasvī ca sa bhavati । tejaḥ prakāśasahitamauṣṇyam । oja utsāraṇaśaktiḥ । bhrājo'vakāśanāvakāśaḥ । tena sarvaniyantā bhavati । idaṁ ca rūpamātyantikaikāntikabhaktimanmanomātragocaram । īśvaraḥ pūrvasūtrokta iva veditavyaḥ । puruṣaviśeṣa iti padaṁ puruṣottama uttamapuruṣa ityarthakam । ayamarthaḥ “uttamaḥ puruṣastvanyaḥ paramātmetyudāhṛtaḥ । yo lokatrayamāviśya bibhartyavyaya īśvara” iti sākṣādbhagavataiva uktam । “yasmāt kṣaramatīto'hamakṣarādapi cottamaḥ । ato'sti loke vaide ca prathitaḥ puruṣottamaḥ । '' iti gītāsūktiridaṁ dṛḍhīkaroti । kṣaraḥ saṁsārī baddhajīvaḥ, akṣaro muktajīvaḥ । īśvaraḥ kṣarākṣarātmako'nyaḥ । īdṛśeśvarapraṇidhānamaṣṭāṅgasahitabhaktimatāṁ yamaniyamādisamādhimatāṁ sarvavidhasamādhirūpaṁ karatalāmalakavat bhavatati parāśarapūrāṇe “paraḥ parāṇāṁ sakalā na yatra kleśādayaḥ santi parāvareśe” ityādau spaṣṭamuktam ।
tatra niratiśayaṁ sarvajñabījam ॥ 25 ॥
tatraiva puruṣaviśeṣe niratiśayaṁ samābhyadhikarahitaṁ sarvajñabījam । sakalaviṣayakajñānāśrayādhārastatraiva nānyatra ।
nirgato'tiśayo yasmāt tat niratiśayam । sarvaṁ jānāti iti sarvajñaḥ । sarvapadaṁ sarvajñatvaparam । bījapadaṁ mūlakāraṇaparam । tathā ca puruṣaviśeṣasya lakṣaṇasūtramidam । sarvavidhacetanācetanasaṁbandhisṛṣṭisthitisaṁhārakālīnakarmaviṣayakajñānāśraya ityarthaḥ । tacca samābhyadhikarahitaṁ sarvadāsaṁkucitaṁ jñānam ।
pūrveṣāmapi guruḥ kālenānavacchedāt ॥ 26 ॥
sa eṣaḥ, yaḥ pūrvamuktaḥ paramātmā eṣa buddhisthaḥ pūrveṣāṁ, pūrvakālīnānāṁ vartamānakālīnānāṁ bhaviṣyatkālīnānāṁ ca purūṣāṇāmatmānāṁ cetanānāṁ jñānināṁ gururupadeṣṭā, ajñānanivartakaḥ । īśvarasya bhāsvaraśarīraṁ kālenānavacchinnaṁ nityaṁ ca ।
tasya vācakaḥ praṇavaḥ ॥ 27 ॥
tasya, tādṛśasārvakālikasarvagururūpaparamātmanaḥ, vāṅmanasāgocarasyeśvarasya vācakaḥ, bodhakaḥ, jñānajanakaḥ śabdaḥ praṇavaḥ । prakarṣeṇa nava iti praṇavaḥ ।
praṇavasya paramātmasvarūpamātharvaṇarahasye “pratyagānandaṁ brahma puruṣaṁ praṇavasvarūpaṁ akāra ukāra makāra” ityuktam ।
tajjapastadarthabhāvanam ॥ 28 ॥
tādṛśapraṇavasya japaḥ, akāra ukāra makāra rūpavarṇatrayātmakasya praṇavasya japaḥ punaḥ punarāvṛttiḥ । praṇavārthasya bhāvanaṁ mananaṁ, nirantarārthākāramananam ।
praṇavasyātharvaṇarahasyoktasyāprākṛtadivyamaṅgalavigrahasya svahṛdi sthitasyāṅguṣṭhaparimāṇasyānusaṁdhānaṁ “aṅguṣṭhamātraḥ puruṣo madhye ātmani tiṣṭhati । ” “īśāno bhūtabhavyasya sa evādya sa u śvaḥ” iti kaṭhopaniṣadyuktam ।
īdṛśajapastadarthabhāvanaṁ yogināṁ niyamenānuṣṭheyam “omityeva sadā viprāḥ paṭhadhvaṁ dhyāyata keśavam” iti pramāṇato'vagamyate ।
tataḥ pratyaktcetanādhigamo'pyantarāyābhāvaśca ॥ 29 ॥
tādṛśapraṇavajapapraṇavārthānusandhānābhyāmantaryāmiviśiṣṭapariśuddhajīvātmasākṣātkāro bhavati । anena jīvātmā kiṁ svarūpa iti śaṅkānirāso bhavati । atha ca ye vighnarūpāḥ kleśāḥ, kāyakleśamanokleśāśca, teṣāṁ nivṛttirbhavati ।
vyādhistyānasaṁśayapramādālasyāviratibhrāntidarśanālabdhabhūmikatvānavasthitatvāni citavikṣepāste'ntarāyāḥ ॥ 30 ॥
antarāyāḥ ।
pratyakcetanādhigamasūtre proktānantarāyān tatkramāṁśca pratipādayati sūtrakāro'ntarāyasūtre । yastu svayaṁ śaktaḥ san jagadīśvaraṁ tadvācakapraṇavajapatadarthānusandhānadhyānabhāvanādibhistribhiḥ karaṇairnāñcati taṁ vakṣyamāṇā antarāyā niṣpratyūhaṁ parivṛtya pīḍayanti । yastvaśaktaḥ so'pi manasā dhārayan manasaivārādhayati na tamantarāyā duḥkhākurvanti ।
vyādhiḥ śarīrendriyacetassu viśeṣeṇa pīḍanam । styānaṁ, saṅgadoṣāttadananuṣṭhānamīśvarapraṇidhānasya । saṁśayaḥ, īśvaro'sti na vetyākāro vicikitsā śāstraiḥ pratipādito'pi sa asmadiṣṭān nivārayati vā na vā ityevaṁrūpo'pi vā syāt । pramādo'navahitatvamaśraddhā । ālasyaṁ, śāstroktakāle'nanuṣṭhānam । aviratiḥ śāstroktaniyamollaṅghanam । bhrāntidarśanaṁ śāstrārthamaryādānanusaraṇam । alabdhabhūmikatvaṁ vedoktajīvanaveṣabhāṣāsthānādivisarjanam । anavasthitatvaṁ yatheṣṭācaraṇamaniyatānuṣṭhānañceti navadhā antarāyāḥ proktāḥ । navāntarāyabādhā śarīrasya navadvāreṣu kramavyutkramābhyāṁ pīḍayanti । taccānubhavamātravedyam ।
bhaktyutpattaye manonairmalyamavaśyaṁ saṁpādanīyamityadhyātmayogino'pyaṅgīkurvanti । bhaktirnāma vijātīyamānasikasaṁbandhaḥ । saṁbandhaśca dviṣṭha ityatra na vivādaḥ । sa ca nirmalamānasikakriyālabhyaḥ । mānasikī kriyā hi tādṛśī niṣkalaṅkadehina eva । tādṛśadehaśca śāstrīyasāttvikāhārasevanamātrajanyaḥ । na kevalaṁ sevitasyāhārasya jīrṇatāpyapekṣyate । āhārajīrṇāddhi suprasiddhā ārogyanāmikā śaktistejo vā dehe utpadyate । jīrṇatāsaṁpādanāya santo'pi bahuvo upāyā mitadravyāt nācaraṇāyālaṁ bhavantīti manvānena bhagavatā patañjalinā aihikāmuṣmikaviṣayabhogāyaṁ nirmaladehasiddhyarthamaṣṭavidhayogāṅgeṣu catvāri prādhānyena yamaniyamāsanaprāṇāyāmetyetairnāmabhiḥ śārīravācikamānasikakarmāṇi vicitrāṇi yogāṅgānīti saniyamaṁ proktam । ārogyarūpaśaktistejo vā pūrvoktaiścaturbhiraṅgairyādṛśī jāyate śarīre, tādaśī itarairnānāvidhairbahudhanavyayādibhiścānuṣṭhitādibhirnaiva jāyate । śarīre prāṇaśaktiranyā bāhyendriyaśaktiranyā ābhyāṁ dvābhyāṁ viparītā cittaśaktiranyā । yadā hyetāstisraḥ śaktayaḥ parasparmavirodhaṁ saṅghībhūya strīpuruṣasādhāraṇaśarīrāntarvartiṣu ṣaṇṇavatyasthisaṁdhiṣvasaṁkhyākagranthiṣu ca tattadvayonuguṇavṛddhiṁ hrāsaṁ ca prāpteṣu nāḍīsirādhamanīgranthiṣvanargalaṁ vyāpya śarīre nātisthaulyanātikārśyanātidīrghanātivāmanarūpān vikārān kurvanti tadā tāśśaktayaḥ śarīradṛḍhārogyakāriṇya ityasaṁśayaṁ vaktuṁ śaknumaḥ । tādṛk caturāṅgānuṣṭhānaṁ dehinaḥ na sarvāsvavasthāsu bālyakaumārayauvanavārdhakyarūpāsu strīṣu vā puruṣeṣu vā kartuṁ śaknuyurna veti । svasvadhībhiravagatya yasyāmavasthāyāṁ yādṛśyaṅgeṣu śaktirutthitā tayaiva śaktyā tadanuṣṭhānaṁ kartavyaṁ, tattu atyantānanuṣṭhānaṁ no vā atyanuṣṭhānamityetatsarvaṁ anuktamanyato grāhyamiti nītyābhagavadgītāyāṁ “nātyaśnatastu yogo'sti ………” ityādibhirvacanaiścohyam । yathā caturṣvāśrameṣu taddharmeṣūttarāśramaprāpteṣu katipaye pūrvāśramadharmāstyajyante, evaṁ caturvyavasthāsu pūrvapūrvāvasthānuṣṭhitayogadharmāṇāṁ saṁgraheṇānuṣṭhānam । yathā sarvāśrameṣu brahmacaryadharmaḥ pātivratyadharmaścānusyūtau bhātaḥ, evaṁyogāṅgānuṣṭhānakrameṣu sarvāsu śarīrāvasthāsu brahmacaryapātivratyapālanapūrvakatraikālikakarmasu praṇāyāmo jagadīśvarapratipādakapraṇavatadarthānusaṁdhānatadhyānāni ca kurvatāmantarāyā naiva bhavantīti yogarahasyakārāṇāṁ śrīmannāthamunīnāmāśayaḥ । “praṇāyāmena pavane pratyāhāreṇa cendriyaṁ vaśīkṛta” miti viṣṇupurāṇavacanaṁ pramāṇaṁ bhavati ।
duḥkhadaurmanasyāṅgamejayatvaśvāsapraśvāsā vikṣepasahabhuvaḥ ॥ 31 ॥
yādṛśo mānasavyāpāraḥ khaṁ daharākāśaṁ duṣṭhaṁ kaluṣaṁ karoti sa duḥkhapadavācyaḥ । duṣṭhaṁ ca tat manaśca durmanaḥ । durmanaso bhāvaḥ daurmanasyam । manasi dauṣṭhyaṁ nāma prākṛtasattvarajastamāṁsi guṇāḥ prākjanmakṛtakarmavāsanābalāt bhagavatsaṁkalpānuguṇamutplavanānuplavanapariplavanarūpacācalyāta kvacit kvacit kāle śarīriṇaṁ śarīre luṭhitaṁ kṛtvā tadvādhāsahiṣṇuṁ kurvanti । tādṛśāsahiṣṇutaiva manasi dauṣṭhyam । aṅgānāmejayatvamaṅgamejayatvam daurmanasyabalāt śarīrakampanam । tato'ṅgamejayatvānantaramanukṣaṇamevāvyāhatātivegitadhāsocchvāsāḥ । anicchayāpi śvāsocchvāsaḥ śvāsapraśvāsaḥ । ime vikṣepasahabhuvaḥ । vikṣepo mānasikarogaḥ ।
tatpratiṣedhārthamekatattvābhyāsaḥ ॥ 32 ॥
teṣāṁ, vikṣepakāraṇānāṁ pratiṣedhārthaṁ nirodhārthamekatattvābhyāsaḥ । ekaṁca tat tattvaṁ ca ekatattvaṁ, ekatattvasyābhyāsaḥ ekatattvābhyāsaḥ । ekapadaṁ sarvajñaṁ sarvaśaktimantaṁ sakalaguṇaṁ deśakālakriyānavacchinnāvidyādikleśarahitaṁ sarvaśrutiśirobhūtoṁkāraparyāyapraṇavapratipādyamanavacchinnaiśvaryaṁ smaraṇamātrakarmaṇā sarvaroganivartakaṁ prākṛtaguṇāsaṁspṛṣṭaṁ puruṣākāraṁ bhagavantaṁ bodhayati । “pratyagānandaṁ brahma puruṣaṁ praṇavasvarūpam akāra ukāra makāra” “sahasraśīrṣā puruṣaḥ” iti cātra pramāṇe ।
tattvapadaṁ sarvakālasarvadeśasarvāvasthāsvapyavikriyaṁ paripūrṇānandaṁ sakalakalyāṇaguṇaviśiṣṭamaparimitaudāryadayājñānanidhiṁ bodhayati । īdṛśatattvasya nirantarābhyāso yogābhyāsināmāvaśyakaḥ । tena jagatītalavartisarvavyādhayo bhasmībhavantītīdaṁ bhagavadvācakapraṇavajapapraṇavārthānusaṁdhānaphalabodhaka “tataḥ pratyakcetanā..........” iti pūrvasmin sūtre spaṣṭīkṛtam ।
yogena rogacikitsākrama evaṁ rūpamāsīditi bhagavān patañjalirjāninnapi yugabhedena vaidikadharmānuṣṭhānahrāsāt loke puruṣāṇāṁ strīṇāṁ sarveṣāmapi laghutamarogacikitsākramaṁ dvitīyapāde (sādhanapāde) vivṛṇoti “tapaḥ svādhyāye”tyādinā । etāvatā prabandhena vyādhayaḥ sukhavirodhina iti nirṇītam । atrāpi mānasikavyādhinivṛttaye kati cana sulabhopāyā vakṣyante pracchardanetyādisūtraiḥ । idaṁ sarvaṁ parāśarairvasiṣṭhapautraiḥ svakṛtapurāṇe roganāmabhiḥ sākaṁ roganivṛttiprakārasahitaṁ khāṇḍikya keśidhvajasaṁvādarūpakathāyāṁ viśadīkṛtam । idaṁ tu na vismaraṇīyaṁ yat sarvairyogābhyāsibhiryogādhyāpakaiśca svasvaśarīre rugṇatāyā avakāśaḥ kadāpi na deya iti । atha ca yogāṅgānuṣṭhānasamaye ārṣaṁ saṁpradāyamanusṛtyaiva tyeyam ।
maitrīkaruṇāmuditopekṣāṇāṁ sukhaduḥkhapuṇyāpuṇyaviṣayāṇāṁ bhāvanātaścitaprasādanam ॥ 33 ॥
mitrasya bhāvo maitrī । sneha ityarthaḥ । manaso bāhyendriyasannikarṣajanyo bāhyaviṣayākāreṇa dṛḍhaḥ pariṇāma iti bhāvanā । īdṛśasnehabhāvanāṁ sukhiteṣu viṣayeṣu kṛtvā yastuṣyati, saḥ kramāt duḥkhadūro bhavati । evameva karuṇābhāvanā duḥkhiteṣu, muditābhāvanā puṇyaviṣayeṣu, upekṣābhāvanā cāpuṇyaviṣayeṣu kartavyāḥ । īdṛśavirodhasāmagrībalānmānasikakalmaṣaśodhanaṁ bhavati ।
pracchardanavidhāraṇābhyāṁ vā prāṇasya ॥ 34 ॥
pracchardanaṁ kauṣṭhasya vāyorbahirvamanam । nātyantavegāt nātyantavilambādidaṁ kartavyam । vidhāraṇaṁ11 nāma
pariśuddhabāhyavāyorjihvoṣṭhanāsikābhiḥ pānam । jihvayeti śītalī, oṣṭhābhyāṁ śītkā12rīti pānakriyayoranayoḥ saṁjñā । vamitasya vāyornānupadameva dhāraṇam । pītasya ca vāyornānukṣaṇameva vamanaṁ kartavyam kalāmātrasthāpanena vamanapāne phalaprade bhavataḥ । ete dve pracchardanavidhāraṇe prathamābhyāsināṁ pratiyāmaṁ caturviṁśativāramanuṣṭheye । itarāḥ sarvāḥ kriyā niṣiddhāḥ । āhārastu madhuro bhavedyathā kṣīrādiḥ । dravarūpasyaivāhāropayogo na tu kaṭhinasya । prāṇasyeti svaśarīravartiprāṇasya pracchardanavidhāraṇe na yantrādinā kartavye ityarthaḥ ।
āyurvedādiṣu vaidikamantraśāstreṣu cikitsāprakaraṇeṣu vividharoganivāraṇāya bahvyaḥ kriyāḥ cikitsārūpāḥ pratipāditāḥ । tatra vaidikamantrajapādīnāmapi saṁgrahaḥ । tadvat pātañjalayogaśāstre'pi cikitsāvidhā bahudhā bhagavatpātañjalayogasūtreṣu sūcitāḥ । sarvakarmaṇāṁ sarvavidhayogāṅgānāṁ sarvavidhauṣadhādīnāṁ sakalajanaśārīramānasaroganivāraṇasamarthopāyeṣu mārgā uktāḥ । śarīraroganivṛttaye yathā auṣadhasevanādi upakārakaṁ, evaṁ yogāṅgeṣvāsanaprāṇāyāmavairāgyāṇāṁ śarīraroganivatarkabhāvo'stītyatra na sandehaḥ । yathā auṣadhapānādiṣu rogiṇāṁ roganivṛttaye katipaye niyamā bhiṣagvaraiḥ sūcitā bhavanti, evaṁ yogāṅgābhyāsena śarīraroganivṛttaye bhagavatā patañjalinā svaracitasūtreṣu rogacikitsākramaniyamāḥ spaṣṭīkṛtāḥ । anekeṣu teṣu mukhyatamāḥ śvāsocchvāsagativaicitryeṇa bāhūrūpādakaṇṭhacalanavalanādikamāhāraniyamānusaraṇamaniyamita- deśasaṁcaraṇatyāgaśca bhavanti । atikramya niyamānavijñāyānuṣṭhānopāyān yogāṅgānāmācaraṇe'pi śāstroktakāla eva rogiṇāṁ roganivṛttirduravāpā ।
ye ca pātañjaloktaśārīramānasikaindriyakaroganivṛttyarthamaṅgānyanutiṣṭhanti, tairatyantapradhānairniyamairbrahmacaryapālanapātivratyagopanarājasatāmasāhāratyāgarūpaiḥ sākaṁ svadeśīyasvajātīyadharmānuṣṭhānaṁ yathāśakti pālanīyamiti ghoṣayati manirnāthavaraḥ । abhinavaraktavṛddhiḥ purāṇaraktadoṣanivṛttiḥ asthisandhīnāṁ dārḍhyaṁ kośoṣu doṣaśoṣaṇamaindriyakakriyāpāṭavaṁ viśeṣato vākdṛṣṭiprasaraṇaśaktirityādayo bahavo guṇā niyamānusāribhī rogibhirayācitā api labhyanta iti saṁgrahato munivaranāthamunipraṇītayogarahasyacikitsāprakaraṇe sphuṭaṁ pradarśitam ।
kiñcit puro gatvā taireva munivarairmānasikaroganivṛttyupāyā vakṣyamāṇaprakāreṇa viśadīkṛtāḥ । bhagavatpatañjalinā praṇītasūtreṣu yogānuṣṭhātṝṇāṁ yogānuṣṭhānaphalaṁ kiṁrūpamiti pṛcchatāṁ chātrāṇāmādyapāde dvitīyasūtre ye ca jitendriyā brahmacāriṇasteṣāṁ yogānuṣṭhānaphalaṁ nirodhasamādhirityabhāṇi । samādhirvā asamādhirvā, manaso ādyayā vijātīyasthityā aihikāmuṣmikaṁ sukhaṁ, dvitīyasthityā aihikāmuṣmikaduḥkhajvālāmālā ca prāpyete । tasmāt yo yamapekṣate tatprāpako mārgastenānusartavyaḥ । tau dvau mārgau nirodhavikṣeparūpau । vikṣepamanusaratāṁ viṣamaviṣajvālāprāptiḥ saṁbhavati । nirodhamanusaratāmagadadehasthitiriti prārabhya sarvairagadadehakāṅkṣibhirnirodhasamādhiranuṣṭheyā । gado nāma rogaḥ, agado nāma arogaḥ, rogaḥ cetovikṣepaḥ agadaḥ cetonirodhādutpadyete । mānasikaroganidānaṁ cetovikṣepādbhavatīti na śarīratattvavidāmaviditam । tannivṛttaye khalu nirodhābhyāsaḥ kārya iti kalyāṇamārgassūtrakāreṇa darśitaḥ । prathamapādatattvānabhijñā vakṣyanti nātra cikisākramaprārambha iti । te praṣṭavyāḥ kiṁ bhavadbhirabhyāsavairāgyābhyāmiti sūtraṁ mūlotpāṭitam? vairāgyaṁ nāmendriyāṇāṁ bāhyaviṣayavaimukhyakaraṇam । bāhyaviṣayāśca sarvairabhijñairanabhijñairaṅgīkṛtā vividhāḥ śabdā vicitraviṣayāḥ sparśāḥ cakṣurindriyamūlotpāṭanasamarthāni rūpāṇi jihvāmannanālaṁ ca dagdhvā lohitaśuṣkakaraṇapaṭavo vividhā rasāḥ śvasocchvāsaniruddhanipuṇā nāsāpuṭaśoṣaṇa dakṣā bahuvidhā gandhā ityete khalu daśavidhaprāṇasaṁcāraṁ rudhvā sarvakāyasaṁdhiṣu daurbalyamāvahantīti matvā bhagavatā patañjalinā abhyāsavairāgyanirodhasūtraṁ kṛtam । idaṁ sarvaṁ sarvairanumataṁ rogamūlaṁ viṣayasevanameva । tena ca itastato mano vikṣiptaṁ bhavati । tasmāt tādṛśavikṣepakṣepāya durviṣayebhyo dūre sthitvā manorogacikitsā kāryeti manorogamūlaṁ tannivṛttyupāyā mānasasya rogasya cikitsākramaśca patañjalinā ādyapāde uktāḥ । ātyantikacittavikṣepādyadā atyantadūraṁ niruddhacittaṁ bhavati tadaiva khalu tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe'vasthānamanubhavaḥ ।
bāhyendriyabāhyaviṣayasannikarṣasaṁjātavividhacittavikṣepa (kṣiptatādivṛttiḥ) nirodhopāyabhūta- vividhavairāgyatattvābhyāsalabdhanirodharūpasamādhisaṁpādanaṁ na sarvasukaramiti manvānena bhagavatpatañjalimuninā sarvasukarasamādhyupāyatatphalaprāptaye svābhāvikānavadhikātiśayaiśvaryasarvajñatvādiguṇagaṇayuktabhagavatsvarūpa- sākṣātkārakāraṇapraṇavapadaśabdābhidheyaparamātmapraṇidhānarūpadṛḍhabhaktisiddhyarthamīśvarapraṇidhānādityādīni catvāri sūtrāṇi racitāni । ayameva pātañjalādyapādadvitīyabhāgaviṣayaḥ ।
mānasikarogotpattiḥ cittavikṣepajanyā । vikṣepaśca bāhyaviṣayasannikarṣādhīnaḥ । sannikarṣaśca viṣayasānnidhyabalāt sambhavati । itīyaṁ saraṇiḥ tattatpuruṣaprāktanakarmavāsanādhīnā iti na vismartavyam । karmavāsanā ca sarveśvarasaṁkalpāyattā । ata eva puruṣeṣu strīṣu cittavikṣepatadabhāvau utpadyete । mānasikaroganivṛttaye praprathamaṁ sarvairapi sudṛḍho yatnaḥ kāryaḥ । sa ca yatno bhagavadviṣayacintanādirūpo yadyapi pracchardanavidhāraṇābhyāmiti sūtreṇa sākṣāt paramparayā vā antarindriyarūpamanovikṣepaḥ sarvendriyaśaktivināśakaḥ kaścijjāyate, tatra proktāntarvāyuvamanapariśuddhabāhyavāyvācamanarūpe pracchardanavidhāraṇe na paśvādibhiḥ kriyamāṇaśvāsocchavāsarūpe tādṛśocchavāsaniḥśvāsābhyāṁ na manoroganivṛttiśca jāyate api tu sarvaniyantṛbhagavadākārasmaraṇasahite eva roganivartake bhavataḥ । smaraṇaṁ ca sākāddarśanasamānākāram । ucchvāsaniḥśvāsāvapi prāṇāyāmaprakāroktarītyā dīrghasūkṣmau ca bhavitavyau । yathetaropāyānuṣṭhānaṁ dīrghakālanairantaryādisahitaṁ cet yogināmupakārakaṁ, tathaiva manoroganivṛttidīrghāyuṣyasaṁpādanāya sudīrghaśvāsocchvāsagatirāvaśyakī । gatiprakāraḥ pātañjaladvitīyapādaprāṇāyāmaprakaraṇasūtrairavagantavyā । sarvavidhamanoroganivṛttaye sarvairapyupāyānuṣṭhānavelāyāṁ manasa āpyāyanakarāhāraviśeṣasya niyamo'nusaraṇīyaḥ । vinā āhāraniyamaṁ yaugikī rogacikitsā niṣphalā । bahavo janā vayodharmaṁ vismṛtya sarvairapi sarvavidhayogāṅgānuṣṭhānaṁ sarvakāleṣu kartavyamiti bhrāntā vadanti । tattu nātīva ramaṇīyam । śāstrīyakarmāṇi yathā
vayodharmānuguṇaṁ pṛthagīritāni tathaiva yaugikyaḥ sarvāḥ kriyā apīti niścayaḥ ।
viṣayavatī vā pravṛttirutpannā manasaḥ sthitinibandhanī ॥ 35 ॥
asmadgurucaraṇā etatsūtroktaviṣayapravṛttisthairyasādhanāya atidīrghakālo yāpanīyaḥ, pūrvavayaskairuttaravayaskairvā cittasthairyasaṁpādakeṣvanekeṣūpāyeṣu satsu viṣayapravṛttisādhanamajā.ogalastanadohaprāyamityavadan । cittasya viṣayaḥ sarvadā aprākṛto vaidikaśca bhāvyaḥ । viṣayavatīsūtre sarvaprakārāṇāṁ saṁvidāṁ prākṛtaviṣayatvānnātīvedaṁ bahumanyante ātmārthinaḥ ।
viśokā vā jyotiṣmatī ॥ 36 ॥
jyotiṣmatīsūtroktaviṣayābhyāsastu bāhyaviṣayānatikramya svaśarīrāntarhṛdayasthajyotirdarśanāya yasmin kasminnapyanapā.zzzyāsane upaviśyaiva nirāloke niśśabde pradeśe bahukālaṁ yonimudrayā13 gurūpadiṣṭaprakāreṇāntastrāṭaka14sahitāntaḥkumbhakamabhyasya tadbalenānubhavayogyā jyotiṣmatī vṛttirbhavati । anayā jyotiṣmatyā vṛttyā samādheḥ pūrvaṁ paripakvaprāṇāyāmābhyāsino yogino niśśabde kasmiṁścit samaye rātrāvatāṁ vṛttimabhyasyanti ।
vītarāgaviṣayaṁ vā cittam ॥ 37 ॥
vītarāgasūtre keṣāṁcinmahānubhāvānāṁ yātrākāleṣu darśanaṁ labdhvā yātrāto nivṛttaḥsan taddarśanasamānākārasmaraṇena teṣāṁ svarūpamanubhavati cet, tadvadevānubhavabalāt teṣāṁ cittamapi vītarāgaṁ bhaviṣyati ।
svapnanidrājñānālambanaṁ vā ॥ 38 ॥
svapnanidrāsūtroktaviṣaye svāpnikaviṣayasmaraṇaṁ jāgratsamaye cittasthairyasaṁpādakamiti yatsūtrakāreṇoktaṁ tat susvapnaviṣayameva na tu duḥsvapnaṣayamiti nirdhāryam । svapnapadaṁ svapnakālīnānubhūtaviṣayaparam । nidrāpadaṁ svasvetaraviṣayakajāgradavasthākālīnabāhyaviṣayakajñānābhāvapratyayaparam । uktaṁ prāgeva abhāvapratyayālambaneti sūtre tadanusṛtyātra sūtre nidrāpadavivaraṇaṁ kṛtam । bālākyajātaśatrusaṁvādaṁ kauṣītakibrāhmaṇoktaṁ vāraṁ vāramadhītya sadvidyoktaṁ “svapnāntaṁ me saumya vijānīhī”ti svaputrāya śvetaketave maharṣivaryoddālakopadiṣṭa- suṣuptiviṣayaprakaraṇamanekavāramadhītya paryālocya ca munikulatilakena nāthena vivṛto'yamāśayaḥ । abhāvasya pratyayo abhāvapratyayaḥ । jāgradavasthāyāṁ yo'yamahaṁ manujaḥ, brāhmaṇo'haṁ, vidvāṁśca, gṛhasthaśca, adhītasāṅgavedaśca ityādiryaḥ pratyayo jāgradavasthākālīno yasya puruṣasyotpadyate tasyaiva nidrākāle tadabhāvapratyayaḥ yaḥ, sa eva ālamvanaṁ yasyāḥ cittavṛtteḥ sā nidreti nirgalitārthaḥ । īdṛgarthaḥ chāndogye śvetaketūddālakasaṁvādarūpa- suṣuptiprakaraṇātkauṣītakibrāhmaṇasuṣuptiprakaraṇācca nirṇītaṁ bhavati । saṁgrahataḥ

iti chāndogye vākyam ।

“prāṇe ekadhā bhavati”
“svamapīto bhavati”
iti tatroktavākyāntarbhūtasvapadamantaryāmiparamātmaparaṁ, apītapadaṁ tatra līnajīvaparaṁ, arthāt śrānto jīvaḥ paramātmani layāt kiñcit kālaṁ viśrāntimanubhavati । evamevājātaśatrubālākisaṁvāde kauṣītakibrāhmaṇe'pi boddhavyam । tatra layapadaṁ vihāya ekadhā bhavatītyūktam । ekadhā nāma ekākāro bhavatītyarthaḥ ।
yathābhimatadhyānādvā ॥ 39 ॥
abhimatamanatikramya yathābhimataṁ, yathābhimataṁ dhyānaṁ, yathābhimatadhyānaṁ, tasmāt yathābhimatadhyānāt ।
sveṣṭamanatikramya sacchāstrapratipādyaviṣayadarśanasamānākāramātrasmaraṇaṁ (niyatakālikaṁ vā aniyatakālikaṁ vā) yadā bhavati aikāntikaṁ tat dhyānamityucyate । dhyānaṁ saviṣayakameva । “dhyai cintāyāmi” tidhātordhyānapadaniṣpattiḥ । cintā cātyantānubhūtaviṣayakasmaraṇamiti
‘syāccintāsmṛtirādhyāna’
mityamarasihmo nāmaliṅgānuśāsane nijagāda । smaraṇasvarūpasya dṛḍhānubhavajanyatvādanubhavasya jñānarūpatvāt jñānasya ca ātmadharmatvaṁ vā ātmasvarūpatvamiti vātyatra sarvavādināṁ vipratipattirjātā ।
‘jñānādhikaraṇamātmā’
iti lakṣaṇam । jñānaṁ ca nityaṁ, svayaṁ prakāśaṁ, sarvavyāpi, na bāhyendriyagocaraṁ, svasaṁvedyam । tatra caittikavyāpārarūpatriguṇātmakatriguṇapariṇāmātmakavṛttivyavahārasya sutarāṁ nāvakāśaḥ । tādṛśajñānasyaikāgratābalādeva saṁskārātmakaśaktyudrekaḥ smaraṇaṁ bhavati ।
“saṁskāramātrajanyaṁ jñānaṁ smṛti”riti hi tallakṣaṇam ।
dhyānaṁ saviṣayakameva । tacca jīvātmadharmabhūtajñānasahakṛtarajastamovihīnaśuddhasattvamanorūpam । tādṛśaṁ mano yadā dhyeyāsaktaṁ bhavati tadānīṁ dhyānamityanubhavaḥ ।
paramāṇuparamamahattvānto'sya vaśīkāraḥ ॥ 40 ॥
paramaścāsau aṇuśca paramāṇuḥ paramaṁ ca tat mahattvaṁ ca paramamahattvaṁ paramāṇuśca paramamahattvaṁ ca, paramāṇuparamamahatve paramāṇūparamamahattve antaryasya saḥ paramāṇuparamamahattvānta iti viśeṣyapadam । asmin sūtre vaśīkāra iti viśeṣaṇam । paramapadamatyutkṛṣṭārthakam । aṇupadamatyantasūkṣmārthakam । yasmāt sūkṣmaṁ nāsti tasya paramāṇuriti vyavahāraḥ । paramamiti padamatyutkṛṣṭavācakam । mahatpadamatisthūlavācakam । paramamahattvamatyutkṛṣṭasthūlamityarthaḥ । prapañce jñāninā jñeye dve eva vastunī, yat paramāṇu (paramasūkṣmaṁ) paramamahacca (atyantasthūlaṁ, atyantapṛthutamaṁ) । vaśīkāraḥ, avaśaṁ vaśaṁ karotīti vaśīkāraḥ, svādhīnāpattiḥ । prākkālīnāsvādhīnaṁ vartamānakālīnasvādhīnamityarthaḥ । prapañrūpaṁ paramasūkṣmaṁ paramamahadapi tacca sadharmakam । saguṇabhagavaddhyānamīdṛśaṁ prapañcaṁ svādhīnaṁ karoti ।
paramāṇuparamamahattvānto asyeti । etena yogāṅgānuṣṭhāyinaḥ puruṣasya svarūpaṁ asyeti padaṁ vakti । dhyāturdhyānamanyat dhyeyāt dhyānamanyat । etenātīndriyāṇyapi tattvāni manasā sākṣātkartuṁ bhagavaddhyānaniṣṭhāḥ prabhavanti । idameva manasi nidhāya antarāyābhāvasūtre jagadīśvarasvarūpaguṇadhyāyināṁ paramāṇorapi sūkṣmatarasya paramāṇuṣvapyantargūḍhasya pratyakcetananāmāntarabhājo jīvātmano'dhigamaḥ, sākṣātkāro'rthādanubhavo laghu sidhyatīti jñāpita bhavati ।
kṣīṇavṛtterabhijātasyeva maṇergrahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyeṣu tatsthatadañjanatā samāpattiḥ ॥ 41 ॥
kṣīṇā vṛttayo yasya saḥ kṣīṇavṛttiḥ, tasya kṣīṇavṛttervṛttayaḥ । cittavyāpārāḥ । kṣīṇāḥ kṣayaṁ prāptāḥ । abhijātasya doṣavihīnasya maṇervajrasyeva puruṣasya samāpattiḥ, na tu cittasya । gṛhṇāti, upādatta iti grahītā puruṣaparam । gṛhyate'neneti grahaṇamitīndriyāṇi । grahītuṁ, upādātuṁ yogyaṁ grāhyaṁ viṣayassarveśvaraḥ paramātmā । grahītṛ-ca grahaṇaṁ ca grāhyaṁ ca, teṣu grahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyeṣu । tasmin tiṣṭhatīti tatsthaḥ paramātmani tiṣṭhatītyarthaḥ । tenāñjanatā, tadañjanatā ; añjanaṁ lepanam ।
yasya puruṣasya cittavṛttayaḥ kṣīṇatāṁ prāptāḥ tādṛśapuruṣaḥ kṣīṇavṛttirityākhyāyate । arthāt niruddhacitta ityarthaḥ । tadānīṁ kathaṁ vartate? abhijāto maṇiriva vartate । atyantotkṛṣṭajātasya śuddhamaṇervajrasya iva, arthāt doṣavihīnasya maṇeriva jīvātmano'bhijātasyeva maṇeriva vṛttiḥ । tadānīṁ kathamanubhavaḥ? grahītā jīvātmā, grahaṇamitīndriyāṇi, grāhyamiti sarveśvaraḥ paramātmā । yo yogāṅgānuṣṭhānena kṣīṇavṛttirbhavati, sa grahītṛgrahaṇagrāhyeṣu, arthāt svayaṁ dhyeyākāro dhyānenākto bhavati, dhyeyasvarūpāpanno bhavati । dhyeyākārasmaraṇamahimnā dhyeyena sārka svayamakto bhavati । añjanavat sarvaṁ tanmayaṁ bhavati । sā samāpattiḥ sthitiḥ । atra dhyeyaḥ paramātmadivyamaṅgalavigraho na prākṛta ityavagantavyam ।
tatra śabdārthajñānavikalpaiḥ saṁkīrṇā savitarkā samāpattiḥ ॥ 42 ॥
savitarkasamāpattilakṣaṇamāha śabdārthajñānavikalpairiti sūtreṇa । yadyapi pramāṇasūtre vikalparūpacittavṛtternirvastukatvaṁ khyāpitaṁ, tathāpi tatpramāṇaviṣayakamiti khyāpayatā sūtrakāreṇa savitarkasamādhisūtrasthavikalpaśabdo'nyathā varṇanīyo bhavati yadvāyaṁ prakṣeptavya ityeva sandihāno nāthamuniḥ, atra sūtre vikalpapadaṁ samādhiviṣayagaṇeṣu prākṛtāprākṛtaviṣayagaṇairmilitamiti vyācakhyau । tatsārāṁśa eva bhāṣyakṛdbhirṭīkākṛdbhiśca sthūlaviṣayaḥ savitarka iti vivaraṇaṁ kṛtam । pariśiṣṭasamādhidvayaṁ nirvitarkanirvicārātmakaṁ kevalamaprākṛtatattvaviṣayamiti bodhyam । savitarkaviṣaye prathamābhyāsināṁ prākṛtasthūlaviṣaye samādhyabhyāsaḥ sukhaṁ bhavatīti niścetavyam । yadapi śabdārthajñānapūtre trayāṇāṁ parasparādhyāsena saṁkīrṇābahavaḥ samādhayo bhavantītyuktam, tat mandaprajñaviṣayam ।
samādhyabhyāsināṁ cittaikāgratāsaṁpattaye dhāraṇādārḍhyāya ca prākṛtairlohairmṛnmayairvā svamanaḥsantoṣakarīṁ mūrtimāracayya prathamaṁ tatra dṛṣṭiṁ baddhvā (bāhyatrāṭakasādhanena) abhyāsabalāt tāvat sā mūrtiḥ svāpekṣitakāleṣu svasmṛtipathamadhirohati tadarthamevopayoktavyā । darśanasamānākārasmaraṇasyaiva dhyānamiti nāma । tādṛśadhyānasantānasyaiva dhyeyabhūtavastvātmanastvātmanoniścalāvosthitiḥ samādhiḥ savitarkarūpā savicārarūpā ceti prathito bhavati । sā ca mūrtiraprākṛsthūladravyamayīti śubhāśrayeti śrutipramiteti cābhihitā bhavati । tādṛśasamādhāvevārthādhyāsaḥ śabde, śabdādhyāso'rthe, arthādhyāso jñāna iti saṁkīrṇatā jātā । yāvat dṛḍhīkṛtā smṛtiḥ tāvadabhyasitavyam । tadanantarameva nirvicāranirvitarkasamādhāvadhikāraḥsaṁbhavati । etadarthaka eva sūtre vikalpaśabdaḥ prayuktaḥ । ata eva uttarasūtrārambhe smṛtipadameva prathamamagṛhṇan patañjalimunayaḥ
“smṛtipariśuddhau svarūpaśūnyevārthamātranirbhāsā nirvitarkā” iti ।
smṛtipariśuddhau svarūpaśūnyevārthamātranirbhāsā nirvitarkā ॥ 43 ॥
etayaiva savicārā nirvicārā ca sūkṣmaviṣayā vyākhyātā ॥ 44 ॥
savitarkanirvitarkasamādhiḥ sthūlaviṣaye । savicāranirvicārasamādhiḥ sūkṣmaviṣaye । dhyeyapadārtho viṣayaḥ । dhyeyastu paramātmā । tasya pramāṇamīśvarapraṇidhānasūtrameva । tena dhyānadhyeyadhyātṛṇāṁ pārthakyaṁ nirṇītam । etena dhyānadhyeyadhyātṝṇāṁ kalpānāṁ vyāvahārikīti bruvantaḥparāstāḥ । dhyātṛsthāpanasūtraṁ
‘tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe'vasthānami’
iti dhyānasvarūpapratipādakasūtraṁ
‘tatra pratyayaikatānatā dhyānam’
iti, samādhipratipādakasūtraṁ ca
‘arthamātranirbhāsaṁ svarūpaśūnyamiva samādhiri’ iti । dhyeyaśca īśvara eva nānya ityetat ।
‘tasya vācakaḥ praṇavaḥ’
‘tajjapastadarthabhāvanama’
‘tataḥ pratyakcetanā.........
iti sūtratrayeṇa nirūpitam । rajastamobhyāmanabhihatacittasyaiva dhyātuścaturvidhasamādhyavasthāsu dhyeyasya sthūlasūkṣmarūpāṇi gocarāṇi bhavanti । dhyeyasya paramātmana ākāraḥ sūkṣmaḥ sthūlaśca । sa na prākṛtaḥ kintvaprākṛtaḥ svayaṁprakāśarūpaśca । svasaṁkalpamātreṇaiva sa dhyātranugrahārthaṁ sthaulyaṁ saukṣmyaṁ ca svasmin svayameva darśayati । jagadīśvarasya jagadrakṣiturbhagavataḥ svabhāvata eva kleśakarmarahitasya dhyātranugrahāya svenaiva pradarśitavividhākāraḥ svavicitraśaktiyogabalāt śubhātmakā eva ityatra ।
“samastāśśaktayaścaitā nṛpa yatra pratiṣṭhitāḥ ।
tadviśvarūpavairūpyaṁ rūpamanyat harermahat”
iti parāśarapurāṇe vyaktamuktam । tatraiva vidāṁkurvantu mahāntaḥ । īdṛśaṁ ca rūpaṁ dhyātṛdharmabhūtajñānagocaram । dhyānamahimnā prītena bhagavataiva dhyātranugrahāya kevalaṁ pradarśitamiti ।
“teṣāmevānukampārtha” ................ ityādiṣu bhagavadgītāyā avagamyate । īdṛśabhagavadrūpasākṣātkāro yasya, tasya nirvitarkasamādhilakṣaṇaṁ bhagavān patañjaliḥ prāha “smṛtipariśuddhau” iti ।
smṛtipariśuddhau, smṛtiḥ samādhikālīnadarśanasamānākārasmṛtiḥ tasyāḥ pariśuddhiravismaraṇaṁ sāntatyaṁ, na tu viṣayāntaramiśraṇaṁ samādhau dhyeyasvarūpātiriktasya viṣayasyābhāvāt । tacca smaraṇaṁ dhyāturbhagavadākārānubhavabalalabhyam । anubhavaśca sākṣātkārarūpaḥ । yāvān balavān sākṣātkārastāvān baliṣṭhaḥ saṁskāra utpadyate । yāvān balīyān saṁskārastāvatā draḍhimnā sa smṛtau ruḍho bhavati । tādṛśasmṛtirevātra sūtre smṛtipariśuddhau ityasyārthaḥ । tādṛśasmṛtipariśuddhau satyāṁ dhyeyākārasmaraṇakartuḥ smaraṇasya ca vismaraṇameva svarūpaśūnyamiva bhavatīti svarūpaśūnyevetyasyārthaḥ । dhyātā ānandasvarūpo bhavati । ata evātra sūtre'rthamātranirbhāseti sārthako'rthaḥ । dhyeyadhyātṛsmaraṇāni tānyeva nirbhāsante prakāśante'nubhūyante ca । etādṛśo'nubhavo dhyeyākārasūkṣmaviṣayakasamādhiniṣṭhasyaiva saṁpadyate na tu sthūlaviṣayakasamādhisthasya । asyāḥ sthitervarṇanaṁ svasyaivāsādhyamiti nirvitarketi sautro vyavahāraḥ । etadarthaṁ sthūlaviṣayakasamādhyanuṣṭhānaṁ (savitarkānuṣṭhānaṁ) dīrghakālānusaraṇayogyamapekṣyate । etat sarvaṁ savitarkasavicārasamādhāvapyanvetavyam ।
vayabhatra pātañjaladarśanaprameyaprakriyā saṁgrahataḥ pradarśayāmaḥ । yadyapi kāpilamatarītyā caturviṁśatistattvāni prākṛtāni bhagavatā patañjalimunināṅgīkṛtānyeva, athāpi puruṣaviṣaye na kāpiloktābhiprāya ādṛtaḥ । kāpilāḥ katipayasthaleṣu puruṣasya bhoktṛtvaṁ, anekeṣu sthaleṣūdāsīnatvaṁ ca avocan ।
“prakṛtiṁ prakṛtya saṁsarati badhyate”
“nānāśrayā prakṛtiḥ”
iti tadvākyeṣu virodho'pi dṛśyate । naivaṁ patañjalamunivacassupalabhyate । kintu puruṣasya bhogārthamapavargārthamapi prakṛtiryatate । puruṣo draṣṭā bhoktā cānantaścāparimeyaścāsaṁkhyākaśca । īśvaraḥ prakṛtipuruṣebhyo bhinnaḥ, svatantraśca karmānadhīna । paramātmānaṁ jagadīśvaraṁ sarvajñaṁ, sarvānugrahapradātāraṁ, sarvakleśavidūraṁ, bhuktamuktidamaṅgīkṛtya tatpraṇidhānāya yogāṅgāni sarvāṇyapyupayoktavyānītyatra mate svarūpamuktam । anādikarmavāsanāvaśāt trividhaduḥkhataptān puruṣānuddhariṣyāmīti (duḥkhebhyaḥ) anugrahāmakasaṁkalpo na prakṛtyā baddhaḥ pratyuta nigṛhītaprakṛtinaiva । sūtrakāreṇa bhagavatā patañjalinā na kasminnapi sutre jaganmṛṣātvaṁ gaditam । etena pātañjalaiḥ kartāro jīvāḥ, draṣṭāraḥ, puruṣapadavācyāḥ prākṛtatattvāni caturviṁśatiḥ īśvaraścāṅgīkṛtātyeveti jñāyate । īdṛśapātañjalaprameyatattve praṇavapratipādye bhagavati paramātmani jagadupādānatvaṁ nimittatvaṁ ca noktamiti rāmānujīyaiḥ śāṅkaraiśca mahān doṣa uddhāṭitaḥ । tadetadanyat । parantu pṛthak tiṣṭhannapi paramātmā jagadadhiṣṭhātaiva san śaraṇāgatānanugṛhṇātītyalam । caturṣu samādhiṣu madhye yasmai kasmai cana yo yatate te pātañjalatṛtīyapādoktādyasūtradvayoktakramaḥ yāvaddṛḍhībhavata dhāraṇā tāvat praprathamaṁ samyagabhyasanīyaḥ । anabhyastapratyāhārasya sudīrghakālānanuṣṭhitaprāṇāyāmaparamparasya dhāraṇā gaganakusumāyata ityatra vacaḥprasarasyako'vakāśaḥ? dhyānasya dhāraṇādhāratvāt samādheḥ dhyānātiśayādhīnatvāt, dhyānasya ca nivātasthadīpāyamānatvācca । vinā dhyānaṁ samādhirnānubhūto bhavati । tadarthaṁ prathamābhyāsināṁ kṛte mṛdā vā lohena vā surūpā mūrtirāracayitavyā tairabhyāsibhissā mūrtiḥ sammukhe nidhāya niśśabde ekānte sthale tanmūrtervaidikaṁ nāma prathamata uccāraṇīyam । yāvatsā mūrtirmanasi sudṛḍhaṁ sthāpitā bhavet tāvannirnimeṣacakṣurbhyāṁ vilokayadbhirekasminnāsane dṛḍha sthātavyam । nirnidrā api te ātmano manastanmūrtimayaṁ bhāvayantaḥ, kutra vayaṁ kutra sthitā ityapi vismṛtimanubhaveyuḥ । arthāt dhyātuḥ puruṣasya dhyeyākārasya mūrterdhyānasya ca na bhedaṁ gṛhṇīyuḥ । tadā saiṣā sthitiryāvatkālamanuvartate tāvat prathamābhyāsinaḥ samādhessthitiriti nirṇeyam ।
atra kecana ayyantasapradāyānubhavavṛddhā anādhārā dhāraṇā nopapadyate “surūpāṁ pratimāṁ viṣṇo”riti parāśarapurāṇoktaprakāreṇa kālaśāstramanusṛtya (jyotiśśāstraṁ) yuktasamaye śilpāstrarahasyavidbhirvṛddhaiḥ śilpibhiḥ pañcāṅgalaparimāṇādanadhikaṁ bhagavadvigrahaṁ puruṣarūpamāracaya taṁ śāstravidbhirvedavidbhiśca jalādhivāsasthalādhivāsadhānyādhivāsakṣīrādhivāsādiṣu15 saptarātraparyantaṁ sthāpayitvā pratyahaṁ pūrvāhṇamadhyāhnasāyāhneṣu dadhikṣīraghṛtanārikelarasaśuddhodakaiḥ pañcaśāntima16ntraiḥ pañcasūktaistaṁ vigrahamabhiṣicya bhūṣaṇādhyāyoktaprakāreṇa17 sarvavidhaiḥ savarṇa bhūṣaṇaistaṁ bhūṣayitvā tadvigrahanāmasahasrairarcayitvā ṣoḍaśopa18cāraiḥ samantrairupacaran namaskurvan nīrājanādibhi19ssatkṛtya yathāśakti śā20strīyairnavidyaistarpayan vedaiḥ stuvan oṁ hāṁ hrīṁ kroṁ yaṁ raṁ laṁ vaṁ śaṁ ṣaṁ saṁ hoṁ21 iti jaḍība22ndhayantrabandhamūlakaṁ vigraha23prāṇaprati24ṣṭhāṁ kṛtvā utthāyāñjaliṁ baddhvā “asya vigrahasya pañcaprāṇāḥ sarvāṇi jñānendriyakarmendriyāṇi ca saśaktikriyābhiḥ sahāsmin bimbe ciraṁ tiṣṭhantu svāhā । ” iti mantreṇa darbhamuṣṭyāmrapallavādibhiḥ sarvato'bhimṛśya tanmūrtināmnā daśasahasrahomamācarya pūrṇāhutiṁ dattvā pariṣicyāgninā sākaṁ mūrtiṁ prakṣiṇīkṛtya gurumanujñāpya dhāraṇāya ārabheta । tato dhyānaṁ tataḥ samādhiḥ । upaviśanneva dhyāyet, na śayāno nāpyuttiṣṭhan । dhyānapūrvaṁ bahistrāṭakanāmakayaugikakriyayā mūrtimāpādacūḍaṁ prekṣamāṇo netre nimīlya antarekakanīnikāṁ saṁcālayan yāvadaśrupatanaṁ nirīkṣeta । tataḥ śītalaiḥ pāthobhirnetre prakṣālayet । evameva trivāramabhyasyāntato netraṁ nimīlya yathāśakti mūrtināma japtvā nāmārthamanusandadhānastadadhīnasvajīvanaḥ samādadhyāt । svasyamūrteścāntarālapradeśaścaturviṁśatyaṅgulebhyo nādhiko'ṣṭādaśāṅgulebhyo na nyūnassyāt । merudaṇḍaṁ daṇḍavatkṛtvaivopaviṣṭaḥ syāt ।
sūkṣmaviṣayatvaṁ cāliṅgaparyavasānam ॥ 45 ॥
caturṇāṁ samādhīnāṁ sthūlasūkṣmau viṣayībhavata iti patañjalimuninā nigaditam । tau ca sthūlau sūkṣmau ca viṣayau samādhyavasthākālīnadhyeyākārau । samādhiviṣayaśca prākṛtaguṇānāṁ samādhibhūtadhyeye'bhāvāt na kevalaḥ prākṛtaḥ । atha ca samādhiviṣayasya sthūlendriyāgrāhyatvāt, api tu aprākṛto bhāsvaro jyotirmayo'pyāśritacetanarakṣārthaṁ svīkṛtasakalasadguṇaḥ sakalaśaktimāṁśca bhavati । tādṛśākāraśca tasya dhyeyasya āsmākīnākāra iva bhavati; paraṁ tu na karmādhīnaḥ karmādhīnākārasya katipayakālānantaranāśadarśanāt । samādhiviṣayībhūtadhyeyākārasya karmakālobhayānadhīnasthititvaṁ
“na cakṣuṣā paśyati kaśca nainaṁ”
“hṛdā manīṣā manasā'bhiklṛpto ya enaṁ viduramṛtāste bhavanti”
ityādiśrutiśatapramāṇādavagamyate । tacca dhyeyarūpaṁ rajastamoleśavihīnadharmabhūtajñā25nasahakṛta- dhyātranuṣṭhitadhyānamātragamyamiti prāguktaṁ na vismartavyam । tādṛśo dhyānagamyaḥ paramātmaiva । tasya rūpaṁ dhyātrapekṣānuguṇaṁ sthūlaṁvā sūkṣmaṁ vā bhavati । tādṛk saukṣmyaṁ sthaulyaṁ ca dhyeye paramātmani na kālakarmakṛte bhavataḥ । kintu dhyeyasya sarvajñatvāt, sarvāntaryāmitayā ca dhyātṛśaktyanuguṇaṁ samādhyavasthāyāṁ tathā bhāti । yadyapi prāthamikasamādhyabhyāsināṁ samādhiviṣayasya dhyeyākārasya śrutismṛtipurāṇāgamapramāṇānurodhāt prakṛtākāra eva sphuṭataraṁ pratibhātīti gamyate, tathāpi na sa ākāraḥ paṇyavīthyāṁ vikrayārthaṁ nikṣiptapratimāsamāno mantavyaḥ । yaśca prāthamikasamādhyabhyāsināṁ sammukhe virājamāno dhyeyākāro dhyeyatvena sthāpanātprāk śrutismṛtyāgamoktairanekaiḥ saṁskāraiḥ prāṇapratiṣṭhānetronmīlanayantrasthāpanādibhiḥ saṁskāraiḥ sampanna eva tādṛśo vigrahaḥ prākṛta iti ca na kenāpi vaktuṁ śakyate ॥ saṁskārairuttaratrāvāhitāprākṛtajagadīśvaraśaktirantagūṁḍhā na sāmānyamartyadṛggocarā । śaktiśca prākṛtī vā aprākṛtī vā nendriyagocarā bhavitumarhati । api tu śaktimatpuruṣakṛtavācikakriyābhirayamīdṛkchaktimāni- tyūhyate । etena prathamasamādhyabhyāsināṁ samādhyanuṣṭhānaprakāro na laukikakriyāsamānaḥ । itīdaṁ sarva saṁyamivaranāthamunipraṇītayogarahasyahṛdayam ।
atha sūkṣmaviṣayaṁ ceti sūtrārtho varṇyate । sūkṣmaścāsau viṣayaśca sūkṣmaviṣayaḥ । sūkṣmaviṣayasya bhāvaḥ sūkṣmaviṣayatvam । na vidyate liṅgaṁ heturyasya tadaliṅgam । parito'vasīyata iti paryavasānam । aliṅgameva paryavasānaṁ yādṛṅmānasagaterathavā dharmabhūtajñānasya, tadaliṅgaparyavasānam । arthāt yasmin samādhau jagadantarvartino jagadākāreṇa pariṇatasya vā vastuno kāraṇarūpatattveṣu matabhedena prākṛteṣu sūkṣmatamaviṣayo'prākṛteṣa cāpariṇāmiṣvātmasu sukṣmo viṣayaḥ, tamapi vispaṣṭaṁ vijānāti samādhisthaḥ puruṣaḥ । dhyeyākārasya sthūlaviṣaye parā kāṣṭhā anena sūtreṇa pratipāditāpyaliṅgamityatra vivaraṇavelāyāṁ nāthamuninā anādirityeva vyākhapātam । yogasūtrādhyetṛbhiḥ kevalaprakṛterīśvarānadhiṣṭhitāyā aprasiddhiravagantavyā ।
“na tadasti vinā yatsyānmayā bhūtaṁ carācaram”
“nānto na cādirna ca saṁpratiṣṭhā”
ityādiśrutismṛtipramāṇairavagatamātmānātmaparamātmetyetattribhiḥ pūrṇaṁ jagat nirātmakaṁ nirdharmakaṁ ceti vadatāṁ
“patanti narake aśucā”
viti gītāvākyameva pratyuttaraṁ bhaviṣyati । tasmādaliṅgaparyavasānamiti sūtre sūkṣmatamo dhyeyākāro jaḍātmakaḥ prākṛta iti na kenāpi vaktuṁ śakyate ॥
tā eva sabījaḥ samādhiḥ ॥ 46 ॥
tāḥ savitarkasavicāranirvitarkanirvicārasamāpattayaścatasra eva sabījasamādhayo nānye । sabījatvaṁ, saviṣayatvamityanarthāntaramm । draṣṭāro'saṁkhyākāḥ । jagadīśvaraḥparamātmā para jyotiḥ sarveṣu kāleṣu sakaladguṇaparipūrṇaḥ । kālasyāpi tenaiva sṛṣṭatvā.zzzt na tatra kālasyādhikāraḥ ।
“kālaṁ sa pacate tatra na kālastatra vai prabhuḥ” iti parāśarapurāṇam । “kalā muhartāḥ kāṣṭhāśca” iti nārāyaṇīye । sarvāntaryāmī sarvaniyantā ca sadā sarvādhiṣṭhātā samābhyadhikadaridraḥ । prakṛtiracetanā triguṇā sarveṣa sūkṣmakṣaṇeṣvapi satatavividhapariṇāminī । itīmāṁ pātañjalaprakriyāṁ pāramārthikīmajānantaḥ kecana yoginaṁmanyāḥ samyaganabhyastasamādhiviśeṣaparicayāḥ sthalasūkṣmaviṣayān caturassamādhīn bāhyaviṣayā ityudghoṣanti । yogasūtrabhāṣyakāraśca tathaiva babhāṇa । tattvābhijñātāni vacanāni na śraddheyānīti manyante । sabījatvāsaviṣayatvamityekārthakamiti prāguktam । samādhau sarvasminnapi caturvidhe dhyātṛdhyeyena sākamekībhāva iti ।
“praṇavo dhanuḥ śarohyātmā brahma tallakṣyamucyate ।
apramattena veddhavyaṁ śaravattanmayo bhavet” iti
“dhanurgṛhītvaupaniṣadaṁ mahāstraṁ śaraṁ hyupāsāniśitaṁ saṁdadhīta ।
āyamya tat bhāvagatena cetasā lakṣyaṁ tadevākṣaraṁ saumya viddhi ॥ ”
iti ca muṇḍake uktam ।
“omityātmānaṁ yuñjī” teti cātra
pramāṇāni santi । samādhiviṣayāṇāmabāhyatvaṁ pāramārthikatvaṁ jīvātmaparamātmanorbhedastathā ekībhāvaścābāhyatvaṁ ca suspaṣṭaṁ jñāyate ॥
nirvicāravaiśāradye'dhyātmaprasādaḥ ॥ 47 ॥
nirgato vicāro yasmāt saḥ nirvicāraḥ । viśeṣeṇa carati iti vicāraḥ । ‘śṛ viśaraṇa’ ityasmāddhatorniṣpannaṁ śāradapadam । viśiṣṭaḥ śārado viśāradaḥ viśāradasya bhāvaḥ vaiśāradyam । dharmabhūtajñānasahakṛtacittaikāgratā iti padasyādhyāhāraḥ ।
ātmani adhi adhyātmam । ‘sad upaveśane’, prakarṣeṇa sadanaṁ, prasādaḥ । svacchapravāha ityarthaḥ । adhyātmaṁ prasādaḥ, adhyātmaprasādaḥ । tathā ca nirvicārarūpasamādherekāgratādraḍhimnā, svacchapravāho yadā bhavati tadā adhyātmaprasādaḥ svasvarūpasākṣātkāro bhavati ।
“athādhyātmam prāṇo vyāno... ityadhyātmami” ti taittirīye uktam ।
“aśuddhyāvaraṇamalāpetasya prakāśātmano buddhitattvasya rajastamobhyāmanabhibhūtaḥ svacchaḥ sthitipravāho vaiśāradyami” ti vyāsabhāṣyam ।
nirvicārasamādhestu vaiśāradyaṁ patañjaliḥ ।
svayaṁ hi bhagavān vetti nātho vā yogirāṭ bhuvi ॥
vādā anubhavāntāḥ syurmaraṇāntaṁ ca jīvitam ।
evaṁ bhūte bhūmiloke 'nubhūtirdvidhā matā ॥
laukikyalaukikī ceti prāmāṇikajanā jaguḥ ।
nānubhūtirnirādhārā ātmādhārā hi sā smṛtā ॥
ātmīyā paramātmīyā dve satye amṛte tathā ।
nānubhūtiḥ svayaṁ vakti kintu tattvañca vadet svayam ॥
na tāvatā tvaṁ jānīhi jaḍāntāṁ prākṛtī iti ।
svayaṁ prakāśā sā nityā prakāśayati cāparān ॥
ṛtaṁbharā tatra prajñā ॥ 48 ॥
ṛtaṁ bharati iti ṛtaṁbharā svarūpajñānam । tatra nirvicāravaiśāradyāvasthāyāṁ prajñā, prakarṣeṇa jānātīti, jñānam । tatra nirvicāravaiśāradyāvasthāyāṁ jīvasya satyasvarūpajñānaṁ bhavati ।
“ṛtaṁ ca satyaṁ cābhīddhāttapaso'dhyajāyate”
ti nārāyaṇīyamatra pramāṇam । sā prajñā saṁśayaṁ cchinatti ॥
śrutānumānaprajñābhyāmanyaviṣayā viśeṣārthatvāt ॥ 49 ॥
śrutaprajñā āgamam । anumānaprajñā yatra prāptistatra gatiriti nānam । śrutaṁ cānumānaṁ ca śrutānumāne । śrutānumānayoḥ prajñā śrutānumānaprajñā । tābhyāṁ śrutānumānaprajñābhyāṁ dvābhyāmanyaviṣayā atikrāntaviṣayā viśeṣārthatvāt prātisvikaviṣayatvāt pratyekaviṣayatvāt bhavati । ṛtaṁbharā prajñā sāmānyaprajñā, śrutaprajñā śāstraviṣaye, anumānaprajñā tarkaviṣaya iti tridhā prajñā bhavati । prathamā itarābhyāmanyā bhavati ।
tajjaḥ saṁskāro'nyasaṁskārapratibandhī ॥ 50 ॥
“na ha vai saśarīrasya sataḥ priyāpriyayorapahatirasti । aśarīraṁ vāva santaṁ na priyāpriye stṛśataḥ” iti chāndogyapramāṇānurodhenāneke mahāntaḥ puruṣāḥ saṁnyāsinaścāpauruṣeyeṣu yedeṣu jāgratsu jīvānantyaṁ, tasya satyatvaṁ tato'nyatvena paramātmano bhinnatvaṁ tasyāpi sarvadeśasarvakālasarvāvasthāsu satyatvaṁ sarveṣāṁ jīvānāmabhyupagatānabhyupagataprārabdhakarmānuguṇaśarīrasaṁbandhāt baddhamuktanityabhedāt traividhyaṁ ca svātmaprāmāṇyādabhyupagamya kvacit kadācit jñānināṁ śreṣṭhā api tattvabodhaviṣaye bhrāmyantīti naitadāścaryāvaham । aneke'lpajñāninaḥ puruṣāstādṛgbhrāntamahāpuruṣamārgamanusṛtyaiva svaparamatabhedamajānānāstanmārgamevānugacchanti । adya bhagavatpatañjalimunibhiścaturṣu pādeṣu jīvaparabhedaṁ jīvaparāṇāṁ saguṇatvaṁ jaḍāyāḥ prakṛtestriguṇātmikāyāḥ paramātmādhīnatayā pariṇāmaṁ ca vidadbhirvividhasamādhiphalayorapi jīvasya phalapradatvaṁ paramātmānaivaiti spaṣṭatayā pratipāditamapyatyantabālya eva viraktā anekamatasthāpakāśca svayaṁ vaidikā apyakhilavedaviruddhaṁ vedoktānekātmavādaṁ saguṇabrahmavādaṁ ca nirākṛtya bhagavatpatañjalisūtravirodhena cittavipaścittinirodho nirodhasaṁskārastadāśayaśca manasa eva na tvātmanaḥ, evamupāyānuṣṭhānamanuṣṭhānaphalībhūtavividhasamādhiṁ samādhijaprajñāṁ prajājanyaṁ saṁskāraṁ saṁskārādhikāraṁ, saṁskarasya nirbajasamādhipīṭhaṁ tādṛśanirbījasamādhiṁ cāphalānīti jaguḥ । itīyaṁ mahatī jagadudbhrāntiyavaniketi pātañjalasūtradhāraṇaiva vakti । tathā ca sūtraṁ
“tajjaḥ saṁskāro'nyasaṁskārapratibandhī”ti ।
tasmāt jātaḥ tajjaḥ । tasyāḥ samādhijanyaprajñāyā jāta utpanno'nyasaṁskārapratibandhī । anye ca te saṁskārāśca anyasaṁskārāḥ anyasaṁskārān pratibadhnātīti anyasaṁskārapratibandhī । vikṣepādipratyayajanyasaṁskārāṇāṁ pratibandhako nirodhakaḥ kaścana vijātīyasaṁskāra ityarthaḥ ।
cittasya nānāvasthāvṛttirūpam । vyutthānāvasthā vikṣepāvasthetyekārthatvaṁ bāhyaviṣayaraktatvaṁ ca । tena janyo vyutthānasaṁskāro bhavati ।
cittavṛttinirodhāvasthā, tasya saṁskāraḥ । yatra vikṣepaḥ tatraiva nirodhaḥ । yogāṅgānuṣṭhānabalāt paramātmasāyujyaṁ bhāvanāsamādhiḥ । tajjanyo bhāvanāsaṁskāraḥ ।
tasyāpi nirodhe sarvanirodhānnirbījaḥ samādhiḥ ॥ 51 ॥
pātañjalayogasūtrāṇi dvedhā varṇyante । tatra samādhiviṣaye kecana cittaṁ sādhikāraṁ manyante । kecana ca jaḍatvāt cittasya na ko'pi svīyādhikāra iti । ye cātmaikatvavādina ātmātiriktasya mṛṣātvaṁ nirṇīya pātañjaloktasamādhiviṣayaṁ varṇayantaḥ śāṅkarāḥ, tanmatānuyāyinaśca sarvaṁ cittaceṣṭitameva nātmanaḥ sa ca eko'saṅgaśceti bruvāṇā vṛttisaṁskāro nirodhasaṁskāraḥ, samādhisaṁskāraḥ, samādhiprajñāsaṁskāra ime sarve'pi saṁskārāścittasya ceṣṭārūpā nātrātmanassaṁbandha iti manyante । ātmanānātvavādinastu triguṇātmakapi cittaṁ jaḍamacetanamacetanasya tasya ne svābhāvikī ceṣṭā pāṣāṇādivat saṁbhavati । cittavṛttyādayaḥ sarve'pi nirodhādayo ṛtaṁbharāprajñāparyantā ātmānamavalambyaiva bhavannīti vadantassarvānapi caittikān saṁskārānaṅgīkṛtya vṛttivṛttinirodhādayaḥ samādhyantāḥ sarve'pi prapañcapariṇāmāssatyātmakāśceti samādhyādayo nānātmīyā api tvātmīyā eveti viśvasanti । prapañcasatyātmavādināṁ mate sarvasyāpi yogāṅgasya vedoktatvāt vedasya cāpauruṣeyatvānnityatvācca vedapratipādyasandhyādyanuṣṭhānavat yajñādyanuṣṭhānavacca nityatvam । tattvabodhakapramāṇeṣu vedamātrasya mukhyapramāṇatvameva । (rāṣṭra rājaśāsanavat) taduktakarmānuṣṭhāne daṇḍaprāptibhayāt sarvāṇi yamapramṛtisamādhyantānyaṅgānyabhyupagataprārabdhkarmavāsanālabdhaśarīraiḥ puruṣaiḥ strībhiḥ
“māmeva ye prapadyante māyāmetāṁ taranti te” iti gītoktaśraddhābhaktividheyairharṣādevānuṣṭhīyante na tu kleśāt । sarve svāntaryāmisākṣātkārāya niyatakāleṣu bhagavanniveditamaśanaṁ mitaṁ bhuñjānā bhagavadbhajanaśaktyā bhagavantamupāsate । sāṅgarajastamovihīnaṁ sarvadharmabhūtajñānāvalambamekāgraṁ dhyānātmakaṁ cittaṁ tadatiśayena dhyeyaṁ paramātmānaṁ pañcasu kāleṣu svasvaśaktyanuguṇaṁ stuvanto'nubhūya tadākāraṁ tadbalalabdhasaṁskārebhyaḥ, tat saṁskārabalalabdhataccintanānusmaraṇaiḥ bṛhadāraṇyoktasya “atra brahma samaśnute” iti pramāṇānurodhenāsmin śarīra eva śārīramātmānaṁ tadā|tmabhūtaṁ hārdaṁ paramātmānaṁ cānubhavantastanmārgamitarebhya upadiśanta ānandamanubhavanti । itīyaṁ śrīmannāthamunisaṁpradāyaparipāṭī ।
sūtrārthastu, tasyāpi nirodhe, ṛtaṁbharāprajñājanyasaṁskārasya, saṁskārabalalabdhabhagavadanusmaraṇasya ca nirodhe, nirodhaḥ, nirgato rodhaḥ kūlamāvaraṇaṁ yasmāt, samādhikālīnabhagavadanusmaraṇāt sa nirodhaḥ । tadānīmeva nirbajasamādhirapyasmin mate'bhyapagata ekatrādhāralayaḥ anyatrāsaṁkucitajñānaprasaraśceti ।
1. duryogamallabhallā ca sadyogamallitallajā ।
yogavallī hṛdāruḍhā śrīśaṁ prāpayati svayam ॥
2. maudalyagotrajaḥ śrīmān nāthamuneśca dauhitraḥ ।
śrīraṅganātho'tanuta śrīyogavallarīṁ kalyām ॥
3. catuṣkāṇḍamidaṁ yogarahasyaṁ nāthanirmitam ।
saṁgṛhya raṅgadāso'yaṁ nirmame yogavallikām ॥
4. etadapi saṁjagrāha śrīnāthamunervaṁśajaḥ ।
yogaśāstravicca śrīmān prayoge cāpi kuśalaḥ ॥
5. pātañjalasya sūtrasya vyākhyāmāha ca kautukāt ।
śrīkṛṣṇanāmā ca sudhīḥ svakīye yogamandire ॥
ṭippaṇī
1) tiṅastrīṇi trīṇi prathamamadhyamottamāḥ । (aṣṭādhyāyī 1.4.101), tānyekavacanadvicanabahuvacanānyekaśaḥ । (aṣṭādhyāyī 14.102) ityābhyāṁ sūtrābhyāṁ puruṣatrayavacanatrayaviṣaye tiṅpratyayā vihitāḥ । asmadyuttamaḥ (aṣṭādhyāyī 1.4.107) ityanena sūtreṇottamapuruṣapadāsmacchabdenātmānaṁ nivedayantaḥ puruṣā nirdiśyante । asmacchabdasya tvāho sau (aṣṭādhyāyī 7.2.94) ityanena sūtreṇāhamādeśo vihitaḥ ॥ ya eva vaktā sa eva ahaṁśabdaṁ ahaṁ gacchāmītyādau prayukte । ahaṅkāro jaḍaḥ tacchabdena nirdeśyaḥ । ko vā tacchabdanirdeśyamahaṁśabda ityātiṣṭheta? ato'haṁpadasyārtho nāhaṅkāra ityavagamyate ।
śābarabhāṣye'pyātmā evāhaṁśabdārthagocara iti sphuṭamuktaṁ bhavati । tadyathā “yādṛśaṁ bhavān svayamātmānaṁ paśyati anenopamānenāvagaccha ahamapi tādṛśameva paśyāmīti” jaḍātmano'haṅkārasya paśyāmīti tiṅantaprayogo na saṅgacchate । cetanamātmānamuddiśyaivāharahassandhyāmupāsīta, jyotiṣṭomena svargakāmo yajetetyādayo vidhayo vihitāḥ । svargakāmanā nāhaḍa़.ārasya vihitā ।

“ahamiti pratyagātmani bhāvāt paratrābhāvādarthāntarapratyakṣaḥ” (vai.sū. 3.2.14) iti sūtraṁ racayatā ātmā eva ahaṁpratyayagocara iti niḥśaṅkaṁ pratipāditam । gadādhārabhaṭṭācāryeṇa śaktivāde ātmā eva “yo gacchāmītyātmano gamanakartṛtvayuktaṁ nirdiśati sa eva ahaṁpadavācya” iti spaṣṭamuktam । tadyathā svoccāraṇakartṛtāvacchedakadharmāvacchinnaḥ yathā ahaṁ gacchāmītyādāvasmadarthatvāt iti ।
sāṅkhyābhimatakartṛtāvādaṁ khaṇḍayannudayanaḥ ye ye dharmāḥ kartaryanvayaṁ prāpnuvanti te sarve cetana evopalabhyante na tu jaḍe'haṅkāre iti vadati । tadīyaṁ vacastvitthaṁ bhavati “kartadharmā niyantāraścetitā ca sa eva naḥ” iti । nyāyakusumāñjaliḥ । 1.14
2) ṛksūktayoḥ (1.23.22; 1.33.2) prayukto'haṁśabdaḥ ṛgbhāṣyapraṇetrā sāyaṇena yāgakartārameva, arthāt vetanamātmānameva bodhayatīti vyākhyātam ।
3) ahaṁpadavācyau jīvātmaparamātmānau sarvādhārau ityukte paramātmā sarveṣāmādhāra ityatra na no vivādaḥ । parantu saṁkucitajñānaśaktiprasaro jīvaḥ kathaṁ sarvādhāra iti praśnasyedamuttaraṁ bhaviṣyati ।
“anena jīvenātmanānupraviśya nāmarūpe vyākaravāṇī”ti chāndogya (6.3.2) vākyena, nāmarūpasṛṣṭiṁ kartuṁ paramātmā jīvena tadantaryāmitayā sahitaḥ sargaṁ karotītyavagamyate । yathā sṛṣṭistathaiva sthitiḥ, layo'pi । sarvatra jīvena sahaiva paramātmā sarvaṁ viśvaṁ bibharti । ata ubhau sarvādhārau । nātra kācidanupapattiḥ ।
4) śrīmadrāmāyaṇe āraṇyakāṇḍe śarabhaṅga (pañcamaḥ sargaḥ) śabarī (catussaptatitamaḥ sargaḥ) prabhṛtayo bhagavatprasādaṁ prāpurityādikamatrānusandheyam । tathaiva dhruvo'pi bhagavadanugrahabhāgabhūditiśrīviṣṇupurāṇāda (prathamāṁśadvādaśādhyāyāda) vagamyate ।
5) daṇḍakāraṇyavāsino munayaḥ śrīrāmādabhayaṁ prāptavanta ityanusmartavyam । tathaiva gokulavāsino gopā mucukuntasudāmetyādayaścepsitāni śrīkṛṣṇātprāpuḥ ।
6) śrīmannāthamunīnāṁ dauhitrasya nirmaladāsasya pautraḥ kurūkādhīśaḥ kurukaikāvalappaniti drāviḍanāmnā prasiddhaḥ yogānuṣṭhane'tīva kuśala iti guruparamparātaḥ pratīyate । bhagavannāthamunipraṇītayogarahasyasya sāragrantho'nena praṇīta iti śrūyate parantu nopalabhyate ।
7) bhagavantaṁ vāsudevaṁ navanītanāṭyācāryaśabdena “āvirbhavatvanibhṛtābharaṇaṁ purastādākuñcikaitacaraṇaṁ nibhṛtānyapādam । dadhnā nimanthamukhareṇa nibaddhatālaṁ nāthasya nandabhavane navanītanāṭya”miti śrīmannigamāntamahādeśikairanugṛhītagopālaviṁśatau vidyamānaṁ caturthaṁ ślokaṁ yogavallīpraṇetā smārayati ।
8) ye śabdabrahmāṅgīkurvanti tairmiśritameva tattvajñānatvenābhyupagataṁ bhavati । śabdaḥ prakṛtipariṇāmājjāto guṇo jaḍarūpa eva । brahma ca cidātmakameva citā śabdena saṁsargaṁ nārhatīti śabdabrahmajñānaṁ miśritamevetyuktaṁ bhavati ।
9) īśvarapraṇidhānamevātra laghutaropāyatvena nirdiṣṭaḥ । ayaṁ ca turīyetyucyate । dhāraṇādhyānasamādhayastatra upāyā iti bhāvāgaṇeśena svakīyāyāṁ yogasūtravyākhyāyāṁ yogadīpikānāmnyāṁ vivaraṇaṁ kṛtam । vastutastu ahaṁgrahopāsanaṁ vairāgyaviveke, śraddhādayastraya upāyā evātrābhipretāḥ ।
10) īśvarapraṇidhānādityatra, īśvarapadena īśvara īśvarī cābhidhīyete iti vyākhyātrātra pratipādyate । asya mūlaṁ śrīpāñcarātragrantheṣupalabhyate । tadyathā-
bhinnābhinnā ca varte'haṁ jyotsneva himadīdhiteḥ ।
tāvāvāṁ tattvamekantu dvidhā bhūtau vyavasthitau ॥

ityuktam । iyaṁ ca mudrā yogasādhanāntarbhūtā vaiṣayikasukhopabhogaparatayā varṇitā । kimidaṁ yuktama? yamaniyamatadbhedānuṣṭhāne nairbharyamāvahanto yogagranthakārā evamimāṁ mudrāṁ varṇitavanta ityaśraddheyametat । ata etādṛśavarṇanasya laukikopabhogo viṣayo bhavituṁ nārhati । tarhi kenārthāntareṇedaṁ samādhātuṁ sāmpratamityasya praśnasyottaraṁ dātuṁ na śakyate । atra rahasyārthena kenacidbhavitavyamityabhyupeyam ।
14) dhyānarūpeṣu ṣaṭkarmasvanyatamaṁ trāṭakaṁ lakṣyanirīkṣaṇaprakāraṁ vahati । asya lakṣaṇamadhunā ucyate ।

15) pratiṣṭhāyāḥ pūrvaṁ vigraho jale, sthale, kṣīre, vṛttacchāyāyāṁ vā katipayadināni nikṣeptavyaḥ । anenādhivāsākhyakarmaṇā vigrahassudṛḍho bhavati । saptarātraparyantamityupalakṣaṇam । ekāhādārabhya yāvadabhimataṁ tāvanti dināni tatra nikṣeptavyaḥ । asya vivaraṇaṁ pādmasaṁhitāyāṁ kriyāpāde 26 tame'dhyāye 59-82 śrokeṣu.zzz draṣṭavyam ।
16) pañcaśāntimantrāḥ- 1. śaṁ no mitraḥ śaṁ varuṇaḥ । 2. śaṁ no mitraḥ śaṁ varuṇaḥ । 3. saha nāvavatu । 4. namo vāce yā coditā । 5. tacchaṁyorāvṛṇīmahe ।
17) śrīviṣṇupurāṇe prathamāṁśe dvāviṁśatitamo'dhyāyo bhūṣaṇādhyāya iti nāmnā prathitaḥ । loke yat sarvaṁ vidyate tadviṣṇorastrabhūṣaṇatvenātropavarṇitam ।
18) pratiṣṭhārthaṁ nirmitasya vigrahasyopacārāḥ kartavyāḥ । vaikhānasāgamagranthe kriyādhikāre saptaviṁśaterārabhya catuṣṣaṣṭisaṁkhyāparyantaṁ parigaṇitāḥ । pādmasaṁhitāyāṁ caryāpāde pañcame'dhyāye ṣoḍaśabhya viṁśatitmedhyāye ekādaśādārabhya dvātriṁśatsaṁkhyākā nirdiṣṭāḥ । parantu prāya ete ṣoḍaśa ityevānuṣṭhīyante । āvāhanāsanārghyapādyopasparśasnānavastrayajñopavītagandhabhūṣāmālādhūpadīpamadhuparkaprāpaṇavisarjanāni ṣoḍaśopacārāḥ ।
19) dṛṣṭidoṣaparihārārthaṁ vigrahasya purato dīpasya triḥbhrāmaṇaṁ nīrājanamityucyate । pādmasaṁhitāyāṁ kriyāpāde5 adhyāyā 77-80 tama ślokeṣvidaṁ nirūpitaṁ bhavati । prācīne kāle rājñaḥ purataḥ, āyudhānāṁ purataḥ, skandhāvāreṣvapīdaṁ nīrājanamanuṣṭhitamāsīditi bhaṭṭabāṇakṛtaharṣacaritāt jñāyate ।
20) bhagavannivedanārthaṁ dhānyaśākādīnāṁ parimāṇaṁ sādhvasādhutvaṁ, paripakvānāṁ teṣāṁ nivedanaprakāraśca vaikhānasagranthe vimānārcanakalpe tricatvāriṁśe'dhyāye, pāñcarātragrantheṣu viṣṇutilake ṣaṣṭhe'dhyāye, pārameśvarasaṁhitāyāmaṣṭādaśe'dhyāye, sanatkumārasaṁhitāyāḥ śivarātre pañcame'dhyāye ca samyaṅnirūpitāni ।
21) vigrahasya pratiṣṭhāyāṁ kriyamāṇāyāṁ tāntrikamantrāṇāmakṣarāṇi dvādaśa uccārayitavyāni । teṣu oṁ, hāṁ, hrīṁ, kroṁ iti catvāri mantrasya bījākṣarāṇi । yaṁ, raṁ, laṁ, vaṁ iti catvāri pṛthivyaptejovāyūnāṁ caturṇāṁ bhūtānāṁ śaktyakṣarāṇi । śaṁ, ṣaṁ, saṁ, hoṁ iti catvāri aṅgamantrāṇāṁ śaktyakṣarāṇi ।
22) jaḍībandha iti karmaṇā vigrahasya pīṭhena saha yaḥ sambandho vartate, sa dṛḍhīkriyate । jaḍībandha iti padaṁ sādhu vā neti vaktuṁ na śaknumaḥ । jaḍa iti calanarahitamityarthaḥ । yathā pīṭhe vigrahaścalanarahitastiṣṭhet tadarthakarmaṇo jaḍībandha iti nāma kṛtaṁ syādityabhyūhituṁ śakyate ।
23) yantrabandhanamiti jaḍībandhanena sthirīkṛtasya vigrahasya viśālenādhaḥ paṭhena saṁyojanakarmaṇo nāma । tāntrikayantraracanā nānenātra vivakṣitā ।
24) sudṛḍhaṁ nirmitasya vigrahasya prāṇapratiṣṭhā kāryā । mantrākṣarāṇāmaccāraṇajaḍībandhanayantrabandhanairvigrahe prāṇaśaktirādhīyate । tadanantaraṁ vipaṇyāṁ vikrayārthaṁ nikṣiptādbhautikādvigrahādasya viśeṣo jāyate । ayameva vigrahaḥ pūjārthamupakalpyaḥ ।
25) ātmā jñānamayaḥ । tasmin brāhyābhyantarairarthaiḥ karaṇadvārā jñānaṁ janyate । tadā tajjñānamātmano dharmabhūtaṁ bhavati ।
nyāyāḥ
laukikavaidikabhedena nyāyā bahavo bartante । sanmārgapravartanārthaṁ nyāyaḥ nītibodhakavākyarūpaḥ prayujyate । yogavallyāmācāryāḥ svena pratipāditānāmabhiprāyaṁ spaṣṭamitarebhya vedayituṁ nyāyān prayuṅkte । adho nirdiṣṭā nyāyāstatra tatra uktāḥ ।
1. prārabdhakarma bhoge vinā na kṣīyata iti nyāya prathamapādasthasyāṣṭādaśasūtravivaraṇe udāhṛtam । svajīvitakāla
eva svakarma bhagavaddhyānarūpamapi jīvena kartavyameva । no cet vimuktirna syādeva ।
2. gītāyāṁ ca yaṁ yaṁ bhāvamiti loka uktaḥ । tasyāśca yo yādṛśaṁ janma athavā bhāvaṁ smaranneva dehaṁ tyajati sa punarjanma tādṛśameva prāpnoti । sā prāptiśca pūrvamabhilaṣitaṁ prāptumiṣyamāṇaṁ janma athavā bhāvamanurudhyaiva vartate । ayaṁ śloko nyāyatvena parigṛhītaḥ । ayaṁ ca tatkratuṁ nyāyaṁ (chā.u.3.14.1) smārayati । (1.30)
3. kāraṇavijñānanyāyaḥ । mithassaṁbaddhavastuṣu, ekasmin dṛṣṭipathaṁ prāpte, tatsaṁbaddhamanyadvastu tadānīṁ smaryate । paramātmanā virahite jīve ahaṁgrahopasanayā pratyakṣīkṛte tadavinābhūtaḥ paramātmāpi smṛtipathamāpatati । ato jīva ityukte paramātmaviśiṣṭo jīva eva grāhya ityarthaḥ ।
4. tantrayuktiḥ । anuktamanyato grāhyamiti tantrayuktiṣvanekeṣvanyatamaiṣā । kasmiṁścicchāstre yadanuktaṁ bhavāti, parantu tadavaśyamapekṣyate, tadā tadanyasmin śāstre yadyupalabdhaṁ, tat grāhyameva । yogācaraṇasya bahavo'ntarāyā uparodhakā bhavanti । te nissārayitavyāḥ । tadarthamupāyā na kevalaṁ yogagranthebhyaḥ (1.30), etadviṣayapratipādakagranthāntarebhyo'pi grahītavyāḥ ।
vidyāḥ
yogavallyāṁ vyākhyātrā catasro brahmavidyā nāmnā nirdiṣṭāḥ । upaniṣatyu dvātriṁśadbrahmavidyāḥ brahmopāsanāthemuktā bhavanti । etāḥ parasparaṁ vilakṣaṇā; pratyekaṁ dhyeyatayā etāsāṁ kaścanārtho vihitaḥ । sarvāpyetā mokṣopāyabhūtā eveti vedāntināṁ siddhāntaḥ ।
1. chāndogye saptame'dhyāye bhūmavidyā upavarṇitā । bhūmaśabdena brahma eva vācyo na tu jīva iti prakhyāpyata asminnadhyāye । cittapadaṁ bandhanāvasthāyāṁ sthitaṁ jīvameva bodhayatīti vyākhyātā caturthasūtravṛttau āvedayati ।
2. śāṇḍilyavidyā-chāndogye tṛtīye caturdaśavibhāge manomayaṁ brahma pariśuddhamanasā grāhyamityuktam । bṛhadāraṇyake (5.6) caitadeva pratipāditam । yogavallyāṁ navamasūtravṛttau asya vivaraṇaṁ kṛtam ।
3. pratardanavidyā divodāsaputraṁ pratardanamindro duḥkhavimocanāya prathamato māmupāssveti nirdideśa । mudritopaniṣadgranthe “māmeva vijānīhi” iti vākyameva dṛśyate ।
4. sadvidyā-sadeva somya idamagra āsīditi putraṁ śvetaketuṁ śikṣayannāruṇiḥ putrāya svapnāntasya tattvaṁ varṇayāmāseti chāndogye (6.8.1) pratipāditam । yogavallyāmiyaṁ vidyā aṣṭatriśaṁsūtravyākhyāne'bhihitā ।
5. sarvaṁ sāpavadamityasya nyāyasyeśvarapraṇidhānādvetyetatsūtraṁ jñāpakaṁ bhavati । cittavṛttinirodhaḥ kartavya ityutsargaḥ । īśvarapraṇidhānādvetyetadapavādo bhavati ।
